Cheffrank's Profile

So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore

I have to agree on the Tuscan Kitchen. The food is inventive and really well prepared and the service is outstanding. They also have a full service bakery in the basement that turns out some of the best bread I have had in a restaurant.

Pizza, pizza.....north of Boston

If you like thin crust bar style pizza, I would recommend The Brown Jug in Chelsea. Since their move from the former cellblock-like location, the place has become somewhat gentrified and you can't beat their prices. It is now located adjacent to the shopping center on rt. 16, set back between a McDonalds and a CVS.

Saturday Brunch/light lunch before the Nutcracker 1PM Matinee

Greetings and thanks in advance

My wife, daughter and in-laws are going to the Nutcracker on the 10th and are interested in some kind of Brunch/Lunch before. Anyone know if there is a nice place that puts on a good spread before noon near the Opera House?

Best Burger (and fries) not in Boston, Cambridge or Somerville

I like Grassfields in Danvers (the price is certainly right) and also, surprisingly, the one at The Newbridge Cafe in Chelsea. I had never ordered anything but the tips in the past but deviated from that the other day and found the burger, cooked with BBQ sauce, to be pretty good.

Turducken availability?

If you are still looking and Danvers is not too much of a trek for you, Mckinnon's market was selling Tony Chachere's Turducken frozen for around $50 or $60 the other day, about half what you would expect to pay online.

Danvers

Try 9 Elm in downtown Danvers, the new Santarpio's on rt 1 and 466, a local hangout with good food and atmosphere. They are all close by and pretty good

St. Louis Style Pizza

If you ever on the North Shore, try Calitri's or Sam and Joe's in Danvers. Cracker thin crust and decent toppings. For a really thin bar pizza (personal size) try Monte's in Lynn. Really amazing value for the price they charge and very thin crust

Decent Bar Pizza Around Everett, Revere, Lynn, Salem, Peabody?

I finally made it over to Monte's last week and was really delighted with the pizza and the place. Friendly bartenders and great people at the bar made the experience terrific. I ordered a cheese pizza with garlic which was all of about 10 bucks and it was really good, better than Brown Jug which really surprised me.

Santarpio's Peabody

I agree with you. The crust was a bit eccentric, too thick i some spots, something they hopefully will work out in time. Some of the slices were almost perfect, some not. Good flavor, though. I am going to give them a week to iron out the wrinkles and give them another shot

Santarpio's Peabody

Santarpios opened last Wednesday in a very subdued manner with little publicity. I was heading home mid afternoon today and stopped for a late lunch at the bar.The menu is exactly like the original place, lamb, sausage and pizza. I opted for a cheese pizza with garlic priced at a pretty reasonable 12 bucks or so. Service was pretty good; there were 3 people behind the bar.

They have a full bar, fair beer selection and house wines by the glass or carafe....cheap! The pizza came out in a reasonable time and was it ever garlicy! Great for me but others might be put off as it was strong. The crust was that quasi-New Haven type, a little charred but not as thin as Pepe's or Sally's. Good flavored sauce and fresh cheese. The folks working there were nice enough but seemed a bit stressed which I guess would be normal with a new opening.

Overall, I liked the pizza....again, it is NOT New Haven but nothing is. The only off putting thing I can think of is the amount of coarse corn meal that is on the pizza. It adds a bit of gritiness that can be a little daunting at first but you get used to it after the first slice. I fully intend to go back for some of that sausage and lamb; it looked fantastic as it was coming to others at the bar.

Check it out if you are on the north shore and have gone to the East Boston location. The pizza is very close to the original and I think you will like it.

Brown Jug moving

I finally made a stop at the Brown Jug last week; GREAT bar pizza! ON their website, they state that they are moving to 1014 Revere Beach Parkway in Chelsea and will be reopenung on or about August 28th. The link can be found here: http://www.brownjugchelsea.com/

Need A Restaurant in Milford for Tomorrow Night! PLEASE HELP.

I would recommend Gusto, a fantastic little place in Milford. Here's a review I wrote last year:
Gusto restaurant, Milford, CT, Excellent!
Hello hounds

Had occasion to be in Milford on business this week and visited Gusto on route 1 for lunch with several business colleagues. The place was very clean and the staff extremely friendly. Bread and roasted garlic were brought to the table promptly and refilled upon request which was often.

We had a charming waitress from Liverpool who really knew both the menu and the wine list. We started with a roasted cauliflower soup that was superb, a bit smoky (bacon?) with great texture and terrific flavor. Two of my associates had a special, blackened tilapia with chutney which was really well thought out and delicious. I had Chicken Francese which was perfectly cooked with a lemony sauce but the hit for me was the side of pasta with a fresh tomato sauce that had large pieces of torn basil in it. Terrific!

European Restaurant

There was a review in the North section of the Blobe yesterday. Here's a snippet:
According to the restaurant's website as well as an earlier note from the writer of the I'm Your Server Not Your Servant blog on our Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page, the same family that owned the European Restaurant (which had been on Hanover Street in Boston's North End) has opened a new spot in North Chelmsford called Aprile's European Restaurant. Located on Princeton Street where Bainbridge's Restaurant used to be, Aprile's European Restaurant is housed in a spacious old brick millhouse with plenty of seating, exposed brick, and exposed pipes along the ceiling.

Westford, MA

Unfortunately, it closed. The food was excellent, particularly for a small place in a strip mall.

Gourmet Donuts

Kanes in Saugus is still the gold standard in Massachusetts

rib eye as substitute for short ribs in making beef bourguignon???

I'm sure it would taste great (if not a bit less rich) but there are so many other things to do with a great and expensive cut of meat like rib eye. I usually use flank for bourguinon.

Recc for fish dish in Gloucester/Cape Ann?

Though not everyone would agree with me, I have consistently enjoyed Halibut Point for seafood. The place can get loud and touristy but the seafood is fresh and simply prepared. Might be worth an app and a drink at the bar to test it out.

Memorial day bbq, and I need a pork butt on the fly (or 2)

I saw whole pork butt on sale at Costco in Danvers for less than $2 per pound.

Todd English restaurants

I still like Olives but the rstaurant can be inconsistent. If Todd is in the building, it rocks but he is not there often

Meal with my Son in\near Warwick RI

Shann, please do yourself a favor and go to Trattoria San Vivaldo. If you can possibly be flexible and take the chef's lead on what to order, you will absolutely love every bite. Inexpensive and just great food.

Where can I find the best shrimp scampi pizza or even a clam pizza?

Calitris in Danvers has an excellent, extremely thin crust version that is my current favorite. They are on Rt. 1 southbound.

Ice Cream Recommendations in Merrimack Valley?

Kimballs in Westford is excellent. I grew up in that area and EVERYONE went to Kimballs on hot Summer nights. If you want a "Man vs. Food" moment, order the Kimballs Special or Banana Split.

The Best Thing I Ever Ate - moved from Boston board

Jasper White's Pan Roasted Lobster

Topsfield Area

The 466 is right up the street in Danvers, a local hangout with decent sandwiches, great steak tips, good drinks and super atmosphere. Just head south on route 1 and you will be there in no time.

ISO goat's heads, lamb's heads, lamb tail fat

Check out some of the butcher shops at Haymarket on Saturdays. they sometimes have off the wall body parts for sale

What is it with Massachusetts and steak tips?

I still love the tips at Newbridge (just search the name on this board). The steak has great flavor and just enough char to it.

I never eat _______ out because nobody makes it right but me.

Grilled Lobster

i pazzi, Danvers?

This restaurant has been a popular addition to Danvers Sq. Perhaps this link would be helpful: http://www.menuism.com/restaurants/i-pazzi-danvers-493572

Favorite Butcher? I need a bone in pork loin roast by Thursday.

Check out McKinnon's in Everett. Decent price, great quality. When I used to do a crown roast for Xmas, I always bought it from them
