grocery store equivalent for Do-Si-Dos (Girl Scout Cookies)
I just recently had some Do-si-Dos (Girl Scout Cookies) and now I am hooked.
There used to be an exact same cookie you could buy in the grocery store, and hopefully there still is.
Does anyone know the name of the cookies to buy in the grocery store?
I looked in my local Kroger store and they didn't have anything like it, but it is a small grocery store and I am hoping they just didn't have them, but that they are still available for purchase in another store like Meijer or Hillers.
I have purchased them before, but years ago, and I cannot remember their name. Can anyone help?
It is an oatmeal sandwich cookie (with two oatmeal patties/cookies on the outsides) with a creamy, sweetened peanut butter type filling.
Please help! Thanks.
And if anyone knows where to buy them, that would be great. So a name and/or location as to where to buy them would be very helpful - thanks!
Where to find Pearl Sugar? (for Liege Waffles)
I'm not in your area, so I cannot recommend specific places, however I can tell you that usually any of the high-end markets in my area carry it, so you may want to call a place like that (call before you venture out - they are usually happy to help you over the phone). ALSO, I have seen it on amazon, so that would be another source. Not only does amazon carry it, but they have several different brands/types/sizes as I recall from when I was looking for it (who wouldathunk???). Good luck! I had a craving for them several months ago after I saw them featured on a travel channel, but I never followed up on making them, would love to still some time!
An interesting link, don't have time to read through it thoroughly right now, but it seems to explain the difference between Belgian pearl sugar and Scandanavian.

Do you have a pot rack in your kitchen?
I also vote no on the pot rack. First of all it adds to a cluttered look in the kitchen, but also there's a huge yuck factor with the dust and grease it collects (I am a germaphobe and would have to put a pot thru the dishwasher before I used it).
How Does Your Ancestry/Background and Home Country's Background Affect Your Cooking/Eating?
I am so curious as to how the green peppers in Turkey taste so different than in the U.S., can you explain more?
This has been a very interesting topic to read about - thanks OP!
Best Homemade Food Gift
Sour cream coffeecakes are a really nice homemade gift, and I think most anyone would love one! Easy to make and only about $ 5.00-10.00 worth of ingredients (most ingredients you probably already have).
Not only are they delicious, but elegant looking too - make it in a bundt or angelfood cake pan. Jewish delis and other bakeries often sell them for $ 35.00-50.00. I always make one for Christmas morning. Mmmmm wish I had a piece right now.
Tip for the iceberg
I grew up eating chunks of iceberg as snacks - never any dressing, just plain, crunchy iceberg. I still prefer an iceberg salad to this day (now with an Italian viniagrette) rather than all those dark "fancy" greens found in most salads these days. To me there is nothing better than an iceberg salad with tomatoes, carrot shavings, radishes, really good green olives, red onions and red cabbage with an Italian viniagrette......mmmmm yummy.
what is the best place for Italian beef sandwiches in the Ann Arbor or metro Detroit area?
I'm looking for a place or two that serves something as good as Chicago's famous Italian beef sandwiches dipped in au jus. I know of two places in Chicago that are regarded as the best - but is there anything like this in and around Ann Arbor or metro Detroit (hopefully in the west or northwestern suburbs (like my hometown Farmington Hills)?
NEED ADVICE ASAP about meat left out
I feel your pain (I recently did the same type of thing myself w/an expensive cut), however,
You have a 4 hour window of safety where food can be in the danger zone, which is above 40 degrees and below 140 degrees.
After that you should discard it.
Mom and Pop Italian
Here's a review of Ralph's: (and it definitely is a Mom & Pop kinda place, there actually is a Ralph and his family runs it):
BEST PIZZA AND WINGS!!!
by nicholio76 at Citysearch
You can now get the best pizza and the best wings in one place; Ralph's Pizza has joined with Long Wong's Famous Wings. They have remodeled the restaurant; put in flat screen TV's and video games. They have added all kinds of new things to the menu, but the pizza is still the same. So, if you haven't been in awhile, you should go check out the new changes!
Mom and Pop Italian
My son went to medical school in the area and he and his wife always went to Ralph's in Glendale. When I would visit, we'd always go there. Really good pizza, lasagna, spaghetti, Italian dishes, great salad, great salad dressing. I googled the place and will cut and paste a little info for you:
Ralph's La Hacienda (Pizzeria & Italian Food)
602-978-2780
15236 N 59th Ave Glendale, AZ 85306 (near Bell)
If you go, please report back, I am curious as to what you think!
Major bacon fail
oh I should also mention it is a lot less greasy this way, the papertowels absorb ALL the grease, it is so much better in so many ways!
Major bacon fail
I am so surprised people don't mention doing bacon in the microwave more often. It turns out perfect every time and is a lot easier in many way. I take a platter, cover it with a double thickness of papertowel, lay the bacon strips on the papertowel, cover that with a single layer of papertowel and again perfect bacon every time! You can make it soft or crispy, you are in complete control. The last minute or so will make the difference. I usually cook it 5 mins at 50-60% power and again watch it the last minute, it sometimes needs a little more time, give it anohter 30 sec zap and see if it is how you like it. Best tasting bacon is done n the microwave IMO.
SOUP w/ Vegetable Stock, Beef Meatballs, and Potatoes....suggestions?
Just want say I use potatoes all the time in soups and mine have never fallen apart, and I have simmered for hours and have used different kinds of potatoes.
Dark sweet cherry fruit bars/popsicles - anyone know where I can buy them? Whole Foods [Ann Arbor]
Whole Foods in my area used to have them, but I stopped in one of the Ann Arbor stores a week or so ago and they no longer sell them. This was the store on Washtenaw Ave by Hiller's. Do all Whole Foods carry the same items or is it worth trying another location? Is there any other store that carries these, I am craving dark, sweet cherries!
Best ICE CREAM in Ohio??
No one has mentioned Handel's, I've been to a Toledo location, but they have many other locations in other Ohio cities (as well as other states) (will put the link for locations below). They have consistently been voted "one of the top 10 places in America to get ice cream." From one news outlet:
Handel's success has been reported in various publications including travelchannel.com, which recognized Handel's as "One of the Best Ice Cream Parlors in the Country." The original stand--still located in Youngstown, Ohio--has been quoted as "The Busiest Ice Cream Stand in America" by Ohio Restaurant News. Chocolatier Magazine distinguished Handel's as "One of the Best Ice Creams in America."

Robert Irvine back at FN?
Yeah, I noticed him on a recent Dinner Impossible I watched, I was thinking it must have been a repeat that I had not seen, but I would love it if he is back, I love that guy!
Auburn Hills, MI
Definitely Lelli's Inn, old Detroit area favorite, right there in Auburn Hills.
Brown Water from my Whisk
If you washed it in the dishwasher, water got forced up into the area it dripped from and it then dripped out - I have done that myself on many an occasion and now I am careful to move it around a bit to get the water out in advance (before it is over whatever I am making).
Car-mel vs. cara-mel/Pee-can vs. Puh-cahn
I grew up in southeast Michigan, and I say:
car-mulh
puh-cahn
all-mon (and I have never heard it pronounced ahhh-min before & I have been all over, interesting to learn of this pronunciation)
How do you clean a pizza stone?
I wash mine in the dishwasher, no problem at all, cleans it up good, I don't know where the idea of not washing it came from, makes no sense to me - please someone, tell me why it really is not good.....
Boca veggie crumbles - what do they taste like?
Thanks for all of your replies, I bought them because I want to become a vegetarian again (I keep having lapses), but then got them home and panicked thinking maybe they were going to be like little pieces of rubber. Without trying them, it seemed their texture might be weird. Anyway, you guys have given me a new-found bravery and I will try them! Thanks!
Sylvania/Toledo Ohio & Ann Arbor Mich Chinese food best places
and yes, I know it is not authentic Chinese (sorry all you purists), but rather Chinese-inspired American dish, nevertheless he loves it, so would appreciate your help!
Sylvania/Toledo Ohio & Ann Arbor Mich Chinese food best places
I am 15 mins from Sylvania Ohio in one direction and 20 mins from Ann Arbor Michigan in the other direction. My dad recently just moved in with me and is craving some good Chinese, specifically War Su Gai (sp?) otherwise known as Almond Boneless Chicken. I myself love a great vegetable chop suey and fantastic eggrolls - please help me with some recommendations for my dad's cravings! Thanks :)
Boca veggie crumbles - what do they taste like?
Hello all - I just bought a box of Boca veggie crumbles - apparently inside there are 3 pouches of veggie crumbles, the box also says two pouches are equivalent to 1 lb. of ground beef. I am so afraid to use them now because I am so unsure of how they will taste. What do you think about them and their taste?
Pici pasta
Since I am unfamiliar with pici pasta, I googled it, anxious to see what it looked like. In the pictures I saw it looks like spaghetti to me, however some talking about it described it as an irregular shape and that you cannot make it with a pasta machine. Will you please describe to me how the pasta is shaped? What makes it so different and/or unique than regular spaghetti pasta? I am so curious now.
Btw, I saw all kinds of recipes for it if you want to make some yourself, as well as a few suppliers who carry it.
Coldwater Michigan recommendations? Angola Indiana?
Hi all, we will be spending a few days over the long July 4th weekend at Coldwater Lake in Coldwater Michigan, and actually Angola, Indiana is very close - please recommend some good places to eat - casual and more expensive, PLUS, most importantly, I always have to know about the best pizza place in any town/area I visit - what would you recommend?
