Fruitcake in SEA?

That sounds like EXACTLY what I was looking for - and made with my favorite bourbon to boot! I just placed my order online. Thanks, Lauren!

Fruitcake in SEA?

I crave a well-made fruitcake this time of year, preferably made with "real" dried fruits (cherries, dates, apricots, cranberries, etc.) and nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, pecans), with a nice hit of brandy to bring it all together. Are there any decent purveyors of this item in the Seattle area?

Where is the dungeness crab?

It was all over at Pike Place Market yesterday.

At which Vietnamese restaurants can I find this dish? Do you have a favorite place where this is served?

Best Local Soft Drinks in the Northwest

Zevia is a Seattle based soda that is made with the natural sweetener stevia. It is great for those who are trying to control their caloric and sugar intake - including diabetics - and doesn't possess the strange after-taste that some find offensive in other stevia-sweetened products. My personal favorites are ginger ale and root beer.

Best Small out of the way place?

Bistro San Martin in Arlington. A great place to stop on the way back to Seattle after a road trip up north.

Snoho Cty dining options?

Head a couple miles east of Monroe on Hwy 2 and hit up Old School BBQ. They operate out of a school bus located in front of the Reptile Museum (no funny critters on the menu, though). They offer authentic Texas-style mesquite smoked BBQ with a peppery, not-too-sweet sauce. Standouts are the ribs, chicken, beans and cornbread.

Any chow-worthy places in this town?

PacNW tour - Olympia/Seattle help

If you are willing to drive about 15 minutes north of the Outlet Mall on I-5, I highly recommend Bistro San Martin in Arlington for dinner. It's really a gem of a restaurant and I'm surprised their isn't more chatter about the place on this board. (Fine with me. The easier a reservation is to be had).

A serendipitous find

About 15 miles east of Vancouver WA on Hwy 14.

Chelan update

Heading to Lake Chelan in a few weeks for vacation. Any new and/or noteworthy restaurants in the area to try? Am open to all cuisine types, especially good "authentic" Mexican restaurants/roach coaches . . .

Demonstration cooking "class" at home? (Seattle)

I know Jeremy Faber of 'Foraged and Found Edibles' is a trained chef and has been known to offer his culinary services when he's not out in the woods hunting. The only way to contact him that I know of is to visit his booth at either the U District or Ballard Farmers Markets.

Seattle Bakery???

Seattle: Help a Homesick Texan

Take a drive on U.S. 2 past Monroe until you hit the Reptile Zoo. No, don't go to the zoo, but check out the school buses parked out front. It's the home of Old School BBQ, IMO, the best BBQ in the region. They smoke their meats on-site over mesquite (the ribs and chicken are standouts). Topped with a glistening of zesty, not-too-sweet pepper-based sauce (none of that treacley shellac job found on most Q in this region ), served with a side of peppery, jalapeno infused whole pinto beans simmered with bits and pieces of leftover trimmings, and a side of moist corn bread, you might just think you're back home.

Oh yes, the owners are transplanted Texans who opened up their roadside attraction when they couldn't find any decent BBQ in the area

jfood's Salmon Croquettes

Jfood:

I finally made your croquettes tonight and, my, they turned out wonderful. A few substitutions I needed to make out of necessity due to shortages in my larder included substituting jarred pimentos for the yellow pepper and celery seed for the minced celery. Also, because I'm a gal who loves seasoning, I added a sprinkling of kosher salt, a generous pinch of black pepper, and a couple of shakes of Old Bay. What was essential to the light, crispy texture of these croquettes was using freshly made bread crumbs from a day-old baguette, and frying in peanut oil. Served with a side of curry aioli and a glass of rose' - it was perfect. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Tea Scones

Good point. I did not use buttermilk, but will try it next time.

Tea Scones

Seeking baking tips and/or recipes for tender-light tea scones. The ones I made earlier today are reminiscent of hockey pucks. Is cake flour the answer? Any other pointers to help create that cloud-in-the-mouth feeling are much appreciated.

SEA - Coffee find

When was the last time you walked into a coffee shop and the place actually smelled of roasting coffee?

I serendipitously stumbled across such a place this afternoon when my bus route was canceled due to snow and I had to walk home. Upon entry the place was warm and inviting, the air was thick with the smell of fresh roasted beans, and the owner/roaster was just finishing up a batch of dark roast. Being more of a Sumatra girl I purchased a pound for $12 - which is very reasonable for fair trade, organically grown coffee. The proprietor, Neal Brown, told me the batch was about an hour old. I made my purchase, scurried the remaining half mile home, and am now sipping a wonderfully balanced cuppa joe - not acidic, not at all bitter, just plain good coffee.

The place is called Brown & Co. and it's located at 192nd and 15th Ave. NE in Shoreline (just north of the North City neighborhood). My sense of wanting to support all things mom and pop tells me to give a big shout out for this place, I look forward to trying some of his other roasts, after my Sumatra supply dwindles.

Best bagel in Seattle?

Make the most of the currently affordable gas prices and take a road trip to one of the following destinations:

Head north to Bellingham and go to the Bagelry on Railroad Ave. (Then check out Mallard Ice Cream next door for dessert).
OR
Head south to Portland and hit up Kenny and Zukes, where they make a nice whitefish salad (along with chopped liver, chicken salad, egg salad, etc.) to spread on their delicious house baked bagels and bialys.

Sadly, Seattle no longer has a decent bagel bakery, IMO.
