The odd cravings and dislikes of a pregnant woman [Moved from General Topics board]
I've been pregnant two times, once with a singleton pregnancy (boy) and the second with twins (also boys). Both times I craved meat like nothing else. The only aversion I had was to tofu (which is something I liked prior to being pregnant and am still happy to eat to this day). I figure I must have needed the iron.
I also had a wicked sense of smell while pregnant. I could smell the garbage, in the bin with the lid closed (under the sink with the door shut) from the living room. Someone could be smoking a cigarette across a huge parking lot and I'd smell it. It was crazy!
Tons of mint -- seeking creative suggestions
Mojitos.
Mint chutney.
Fresh spring rolls.
Help with Summer Rolls
Definitely MUCH better when freshly made but I've had good luck keeping them moist by covering the plate/tray with a dampened piece of fabric (tea/dish towel etc). I've never "held" them like this more than 4 hours or so.
Communal Dining
I've had some great experiences with communal dining (dim sum; Basque, B&B to name a few) but the key IMO is to go in with minimal expectations. Sometimes you get seated with an awful group of people, and on your way out the door you think to yourself, "I'm glad that's over" but more often than not, you'll find at least one or two really interesting people.
Help with yogurt making
Thanks to all for the tips. I made my first batch of homemade yogurt last week and was really put off by the texture. I wanted a thick, creamy Greek-style yogurt, and instead got this viscous, almost gelatinous, goopy stuff. My kids are plowing though enormous quantities of the 750 mL tubs of the store-bought stuff and I'm looking forward to offering a yummier, healthier and cheaper option.
Impulse buy- salt cod- now what?! Help!
Although Newfoundland-style fish cakes are near and dear to my heart, one of the best Spanish tapas I've ever had was salt cod with scrambled eggs. The eggs were barely set, with chunks of flavourful yet delicate salt cod. Fabulous!
