Homeroom's Classic Macaroni and Cheese

my boyfriend made this with sonoma jack chilpotle cheddar--wow!! used 1 tablespoon fine sea salt, and since we didn't have whole milk, used fat-free grass-fed milk and added some heavy cream. most ingredients were organic, since that's how we eat. delicious! we've been to homeroom in oaksterdam, and this is the real deal.

Potato & Leek Soup

just made a killer all organic version--4 leeks braised in butter, 2lbs potato boiled in 4 cups veggie stock (not homemade), s&p, marjoram, hit it with a immersion blender. No need for garlic, shallot, onion--they are in the allium family, as are leeks, and will compete. also no need for cream--the potato starch thickens it nicely.

What is the best Mexican food in Phoenix?

Gallo Blanco is truly yummy. Just reviewed the menu again, and had forgotten about their all day huevos rancheros. I'll have to take my date there--that's his fave. Thanx chowhounds!

Cheuvront?

It's an urban winebar--and it's great. I have actually never had a bad meal here, and love to go in the winter for a glass of wine and some truffled mac&cheese, or a goat cheese empanada. yum... I haven't been in a while, but they used to play vintage films without sound, which was kinda sexy. Lots of glass in the dining room which looks out on the light rail, and super friendly staff. How close is your friend? Would be perfect for a friend with benefits!

Trapped in downtown Phoenix

America's Taco Shop, oh yeah.
Local Breeze, at 4th ave and fillmore. Love to linger here at sunset over food and a cocktail.
The Main Ingredient Alehouse, at 7th st. and Sheridan. Gourmet bar food and craft beers, friendly owners behind the bar.
Cheuvronts, 1326 Central. Small plates and entrees, Apps, strong focus on wine selection.
I actually prefer to eat downtown.

Farm fresh Roma tomatoes

Tomatoes are slightly behind schedule this year because it has been cool. McClendon farms has a large booth every wednesday at Town and Country farmers market. (20th and camelback, 10-2.) The quality of their produce is outstanding.

Parlor (PHX)

Went back to parlor on friday--and it was perfect. Had a potato leek soup w/ green garlic puree that was really delicious. Their roasted beet salad was excellent, with lots of beets and goat cheese. And the pizza--wow! It was the best I've ever had. Do I dare say it? It was better than bianco's. I had the funghi, the same pizza I had on my first visit; however, this time it was outstanding. In addition, the service was excellent and I got to sit in a swank booth and view the fab architecture.
Has anyone else been back and noticed a vast improvement in their food? Or did I just hit the lotto when I was there?

Making a list for top chow mexican recommendations (PHX)

Just checked it out--I think Tacos Mexico is closed now--what a loss. Ok, I owe you a ceviche tostada.

Making a list for top chow mexican recommendations (PHX)

I was surprised no one recommended Rosita's--they have an awesome chili relleno, great refried beans, and an indoor goldfish pond.
Had some mariscos last nite at Casita del Mar and would recommend it to anybody. Ceviche is always great in the heat and theirs was outstanding! Also had a very delicious crab tostada. Be aware--it's helpful to speak a little spanish here, but the menu is also in english.

Parlor (PHX)

Went on a weekend and had a 30 minute wait, which was pleasantly spent in the bar--had a sierra nevada summerfest beer. The dining area was dominated by a perforated stone screen that forms the front of the building, which was gorgeous. [This is the place where the food and mopho meet.] The fritto misto was delicious, as was their salad with roasted beets amd goat cheese. The arancini were very bland, and the roasted mushrooom pizza didn't thrill me.
I'm just hoping they can develop a menu as hot as their architecture!

Dead Broke for Valentine's Day

I made a yummy roast [eye of round] for my b-day party to save some $--It's only $3.50 a lb. Made it according to a Cook's Illustrated recipe and sliced it very thin; it was very tasty. Another strategy is to make a killer sauce for a lesser cut of meat, or an elaborate preparation like a rouladen [beef roll]. Or how about a dish built around a rich piece of meat--like a cassoulet? Surf and turf--scallops and bacon. Small scallops are inexpensive; thread them on a skewer with a piece of bacon wound in between for easy handling and an attractive presentation. [You could use shrimp the same way of course.]
One time I made tostadas with peppered & pan-seared tuna steak, avocado, fresh salsa & chilpotle mayo. One good piece of fish will make four tostadas, and a margarita--mmmmm. Then snuggle up and watch "El Mariachi'!

So what did you eat for lunch today? Home cooked, leftovers or nuttin'?

My boyfriend got off early from work so I made a special wintery lunch-- beef stew, spring mix salad with tomatoes and bleu cheese, and sourdough garlic toast. I had pinot noir and he had a newcastle brown ale. [The stew was like an intentional leftover, because it is better on day 2,3,4 ...] We sat outside and ate in the chilly Arizona weather--it was probably 60 degrees! Kind of heavy for lunch, but it was a lazy day off.

Why did my Pesto have so much kick?

I make pesto frequently and have had this problem also. I now use very little garlic in my pesto, and add lemon juice and lemon zest. You can aways taste at the end and add more garlic, but you can't take it out. Also, I have used cashews instead of pinenuts--the texture was like velvet, and the flavor was awesome. Use tons of basil--esp. the flowers if you can find them.

What's your "secret ingredient?"

For me, Gewurztraminer=soap.
But I love cilantro, even cream of cilantro soup--the ultimate in soap for some people, an herbal delight for me!

What's your "secret ingredient?"

Penzey's makes some really wonderful blends; I also buy the single spices and make my own crazy concoctions. Love their Shallot Pepper, Ozark, and Jamaican Jerk. Bacon fat makes it all good--mushrooms, scallops, eggs, potatoes--just a little bit. Try this-Scallops pan-seared in bacon fat with shallot pepper...mmmmm.
Also love hugarian paprika, both hot and mild, and pasilla peppers.

I'm a Potluck FAILURE

Potato, Cheddar, and Chive Soup-- it's made in a crockpot; u can find the recipe on epicurious. This is a very delicious soup that can be prepared vegetarian. I know you are in CA, but I'm In AZ right now and it's starting to get cold. Everybody gets excited and wants all those wintery things--sweaters, soup, red wine , fireplaces, etc. It's hearty too, and even the unadventurous will eat potatoes and cheese! ;>

The Big Green Egg

Oh austin cat, your post made me laugh! My BGE has wheels too-- just like your lexus. ;> Nobody posted on here about shrimp? Shrimp are tough to do on a regular grill--always too dry--but they turn out perfect on the egg. Toss them in some jerk spice, thread them on a skewer, a few minutes on the egg--delicious! Here, try some--oops! My boyfriend just ate them all up.

Why did you Break-Up with a Favorite Restaurant?

Had a fave mexican seafood restaurant and went there probably 100 times--awesome fresh seafood, excellent ceviche--every dish was outstanding. The clientele was a little rough, but never bothered me. Then they had their third shooting. When I went back they had raises their prices by 1/3rd. A mexican beer was $4.50-- I think they were trying to weed out the rougher element from their clientele, but the restaurant was empty now. I went to a new mexican seafood restaurant one day, and translated for a gal at the next table that didn't speak spanish. And that was when I met--Ricardo. He was the owner , and treated me like a queen after that. Free flan, free drinks--really special treatment in a restaurant with equally awesome ceviche.
Blame it on Ricardo! :>

first time in vegas - restaurant recs

Have generally been underwhelmed by the big name restaurants in vegas; had a great meal several years ago at the pinot brasserie--don't know if it's still open. I think their chef is here at Atlas. However--the most delicious cuban restaurant is in vegas and it is very reasonably priced. In the Howard Johnson's, on the old strip next to the old olympic gardens is the Florida Cafe. Ok, I know this sounds kind of seedy--but the food is outstanding. Even Cubans have told me it is great, and the place hosts quite a few cuban wedding receptions. The restaurant is nice enough; it's been in the same location for a long time, and keeps expanding. I eat here everytime I go to las vegas, usually more than once. If you like cuban, you won't be disapointed.

MARISCOS?????????????????? (PHX)

Mariscos Playa Hermosa is super yummy. Have had very delicious seafood at Mariscos Acapulco [32nd st. and Mcdowell] but it can be a little loud. On the east side-- San Diego Bay in Guadalupe--their diablo is a pain/pleasure experience. On the west side--Mariscos Altata at 59th ave. and Indian School. They make these little peppers stuffed with smoked marlin that are really excellent. San Carlos Bay has really fallen down in quality; instead, drive around the corner to Mariscos Ensenada on 16th st. n. of Mcdowell. Their camarones culichi [shrimp in a chile verde cream sauce] is to die for. All of these place have great ceviche--esp. mariscos acapulco.

True Taqueria in Phoenix Area?

I am kind of confused by this thread, because I've been to taquerias in the mission and they were nothing like an architect designed taco stand or an old scottsdale version; they were mexican taquerias. I have had some scrumptious tacos at casita del mar [n. of oak on 32nd st.] esp. their al pastor & carnitas tacos. The waitresses do not speak english usually--but you can point to the menu if you don't speak spanish. I will try to get you a good recommendation using my usual method-- by asking a mexican patient. [I'm a nurse and I speak spanish.] I would have a list of recommendations, but I'm usually looking for mariscos.
Speaking of which, Mariscos Altata at 59th ave. & Indian School--que bueno!!

Quality PHX Breakfast recs (besides Matts)?

Loves me some Overeasy in the AM--took my whole family there twice in May. Not toooo precious. Impressed my bro. from LA and didn't freak out my mom from Indiana. The iced coffee drink has cardamom in it--yummy. However, when the family leaves [thank god!] I love jalapeno eggs benedict at Richardsons. Epecially after a night out--it's got it all. Room--nice and dark, eggs--rich and creamy, booth-big and cushy. Too bad you have to drive home to take a nap.

Need a rec for a Phx "dressed up" date night

I always love sophie's french bistro [24th st. and osborn] for a romantic evening meal ; I have gone there very dressed up and never felt out of place. I don't know about the glitzy part...
Went there on dec.23rd last year for an early christmas dinner and it was heavenly! My boyfriend & I always order the lobster bisque--one bowl each, because nobody can share that. Every dish I have ever had there was delicious--the scallops, the cassoulet, yummy!
They also have the funniest note on the bottom of their menu about "trying to accomodate the diverse tastes of their clientele, but...."
I love that! So sorry--no ranch dressing with the frites!
