2 Nights in Kansas City OCT 1-2.
yikes on that Yelp review. confirmed my suspicions. scratching that off the list.
2 Nights in Kansas City OCT 1-2.
Thanks for the feedback. The Royal website is (purposefully?) obscure regarding what food is available and from whom (but there is mention of a food court, which raised a red flag). so, if you only had one chance to eat KC BBQ (I'm a brisket guy, everyone else in the group is all about pork ribs), would you go Jack Stack, Arthur Bryant's, BB's or Oklahoma Joe's. Also, would Plaza III be the best Steakhouse for Men?
2 Nights in Kansas City OCT 1-2.
I have a group of 4 guys that I'm bringing to KC for our annual Minnesota Vikings roadtrip. We arrive SAT afternoon and go to the game Sunday at noon. We usually do something indicative of local cuisine SAT night (definitely ISO BBQ) and then steak dinner post-game. We're staying on The Plaza, but will have a car. Leaning towards either Arthur Bryant's or the American Royal BBQ contest SAT and The Plaza Steakhouse SUN, but any other recs would be greatly appreciated.
Pizza delivery in Golden Valley area?
Frankie's on 36th and Wtka in Crystal and Chanticlear on 36th and 169 in New Hope both have serviceable Minnesota flatbread type pizza. Also Joey Nova's on 55 just west of 169 for a more NYC style pie.

Charlotte, NC Weekend Recommendations
Four guys heading to Charlotte for the Dec 20 Viking vs. Panther game. ISO the following, preferably within a 20 minute drive of DT / BOA Stadium:
1) Best Steakhouse, price is no object
2) Best Sports Bar
3) Best Sunday Brunch (Bloody Marys are a must)
4) Best regional BBQ
5) Best Liquor Store
6) Best butcher / tailgating supply
7) Best Southern Food Joint
4 Nights in South Beach
Thanks. I'll be car-less, but not averse to hailing a cab if the meal is worth the fare.
4 Nights in South Beach
I'll be on the expense account in SoBe next week. My days are pretty well booked up with work, and breakfast I usually opt for room service. So dinner recs are what I seek.
I'll be entertaining one or two clients on one or two of the evenings, and will be dining solo or catching up with old friends the other two nights. I'll eat just about anything, but I do prefer locally caught / grown meals and insist upon local & independent restauranteurs. I usually try to keep it under $75 per guest with a single drink. Bring it, MIAMI.
MSP: Bar with room rental, good food.
We're doing it @ Hells Kitchen in the rear bar area for a group about that size later this year. The room is private, has its own bar, they're great to work with, don't charge rental and have really reasonable minimums. They can either pre-make specified appetizers or snacks for you to set on/near the bar or on a buffet...or your guests can order right from the kitchen which has a guest pick-up window right off the bar. Great set-up. They also said that if you wish to host food or wine you can let them know a time frame or dollar amount you want to stay within and they'll accommodate.
Gopher Bar St Paul MN
For my $ the best coney in the TCs is @ Bullwinkles, 7 corners area of the west bank.
North Loop Bakery Needed
I have a presentation near Michigan and Wacker on Monday PM and want to find an area caterer who will deliver several hundred cookies, brownies or pastries to the office. Tried Corner Bakery but they only do orders of 34 and don't have bulk pricing. Suggestions, plz...
MSP: Where can I buy short ribs?
Clancy's has the most beautiful pre-cut boneless short ribs I've ever seen. about the size of your fist, but much more well marbled.
MSP-Last Minute 2nd Best Steak
Strip Club gets their beef from the Thousand Hills Cattle Company in Cannon Falls. Other local restaurants who use Thousand Hills:
-Craftsman
-Alma
-Heartland
Not saying it's an adequate replacement or imitation, but if forced to pick a proxy I'd say Craftsman is closest to Strip Club in terms of pricing, selection, overall experience. And you'll still be able to purchase cocktails.
Blue Tractor BBQ - Ann Arbor
we've been looking for a replacement for the dearly departed Leopold Brothers for our annual familiy Thanksgiving weekend get-together...how does this place stack up ambience-wise?
Mort's Deli Opening Soon in Golden Valley (MSP)
i also noticed A LOT of extra staff seemingly looking around waiting for something to do...all while the 2 guys who appeared to be managers / owners were schlepping furniture around the dining room and/or prepping baked goods...seemed odd.
MSP- Mort Report ??
got a corned beef on rye to go. asked for a half, got charged for a half, seems I got a whole. unless "half" means simply less meat instead of a full sandwich. the sandwich was excellent. corned beef was moist, cut pretty thick, tender without falling apart, little bit of fat left on...just the way i like it. the bread was fresh and tasty. good start. haven't yet had an occasion to dine in.
[MSP] Where in Twin Cities to buy six-packs of obscure, unsual, even funny beers?
between Tanh Do and Four Firkins and that Indian restaurant and Erik's bike shop, TexaTonka has an embarassment of riches. Four Firkins makes up for its lack of size with an amazing selection and fantastic service & knowledge.
Also, shout out to Ciccone's in Hudson for getting most of the microbrews which have not yet established ties with MN distributors, first and foremost Colorado's Oskar Blues, makers of Dale's Pale Ale, my favorite session beer in a can.
Sand Creek Cafe (Western WI)
I have read about the Sand Creek Cafe on Jan & Michael Stern's Roadfood blog, and it sounds intriguing. Sand Creek, WI is apparently between Eau Claire and Chetek. You know, middle of nowhere. Anyone been there? I'm specifically wondering if they are open for early Friday dinner or Sunday brunch-ish.
Anyone have a recommendation for a Jewish Deli in MSP??
Full Disclosure...the guys who own Mort's offered me a free bagel for catching a typo on their blog...but I have never met any of them. I'm simply excited about the prospects of Mort's meeting my 2 biggest unmet foodie needs...a good independent restaurant in my neighborhood AND a good Jewish Deli in the Twin Cities (both loooooonnng overdue)
BTW, I popped in tonight and grabbed a menu in advance of tomorrow's opening...corned beef sandwiches are $12.99 full $9.99 half, and they've got tongue, brisket 2 ways (smoked or mustard), chicken in the pot and some other classic deli items.
MSP: A Place for Thanksgiving
Cosmos does have a great thanksgiving menu. but the seating isn't great for a lengthy meal.
Anyone have a recommendation for a Jewish Deli in MSP??
Having eaten in the field for much of my childhood, and having managed and opened a real deal Jewish Deli, here's my take.
Right now I would rate the TC Jewish(esque) Delis like this in terms of product:
1) Brothers (6th and Nicollet, Skwyay level)
2) Cecil's
3) Pastrami Jacks
4) Crossroads
That's really all there are in this town. Be'wiched, while quite good, is something different.
However, it is my belief that when it officially opens (on Monday, BTW) Mort's Deli in Golden Valley will shoot to the top of that list immediately. I just hope they get it right and that they last.
Where to Find Wild Mushrooms in MSP
I'm wondering where / whom is a good place / lead to find foraged wild mushrooms for home cooking use in the Twin Cities. Right now I'm particularly looking for Chanterelles, but would also be (depending on season) be interested in Hen of Woods, Morels and other edibles.
Mort's Deli Opening Soon in Golden Valley (MSP)
We may (should, actually) soon have a new affirmative answer to the age old question, "is there a really good authentic deli in the Twin Cities?". Mort's Deli appears very close to opening their doors in Golden Valley @ Hwy 55 and Winnetka Ave, in the space that was once a B. Dalton Bookstore, then Joey's Seafood for a hot minute, and now will be 1/2 Chipotle 1/2 Deli...essentially in the parking lot of Golden Valley Commons. I'm guessing they'll be open within about 2 weeks.
According to the owners' blog, they aren't necessarily doing a lot of scratch cooking in house, ala Be'wiched...but are instead sourcing deliciously well known product from the NYC, such as H&H Bagels, Carnegie Deli meats & pickles as well as Best's Kosher Meats.
http://mortsdeli.blogspot.com/
I, for one, am very excited for a Carnegie style high-piled hot thin sliced corned beef with deli mustard on caraway rye...and a real old sour dill pickle.
