Canned Beets -- Talk to Me!

Canned beets, eh? Get your bacon, onions and garlic going in a pan. Remove the bacon, dump in the drained and sliced canned beets and saute. Chop the bacon, add back to the pan. At the last minute dress with a handful of chopped walnuts. Makes for a nice side dish, esp. for folks who don't like beets.

Chestnuts!

Last weekend, a vendor was selling chestnuts at the Farmer's Market, so I thought I'd give them a go...

Roasted them in the oven, 325 for 15 mins. The smell was out of this world! Very enticing. I scored the shells before roasting, and I have yet to find a worm.

For the record, she was selling them for $2 a pound.

Soft Serve Chicken?

Stumbled across this and wondered if anyone can prove or disprove its legitimacy.

It's something your gut tells you could be true, but it's also absurd enough that it could be bs.

Anyone?

And even more scarce are tin jar lids. I hang on to my collection of jar lids with both hands! All you get nowadays is plastic.

Sorry for the delayed reply alkapal...I have tried the mayo, the IGA in town used to sell it, but no more, and it was good - I still like Duke's best.

I'll have to check out HT. It's more a nostalgia thing. My dad still has a couple of the 1/2 gallon size jars the PB used to come in. No one I know anymore sells PB in 32oz glass jars!

This summer's been a little hectic and the economy has lightened my wallet so I haven't been hounding like I would like. I thought that I would catalog a closing though. Cuchi Guido's downtown has closed. I was a good pizza joint and I don't know why they folded. Anyone?

Are you a brand slave?

I am a slave to relatively few brands. I’ve found the house brands carried at the IGA are very satisfying.

However, my loyalty lies with: Coca-Cola, Gibbles, Mt. Olive, Duke’s and Kunzler (bacon).

If I could find it, I’d love to re-taste the JFG peanut butter from my childhood.

What menu items need to be retired?

I'll have to venture out of the boonies and make a trip to DC. By the time that trends finds it's way out here, I'll be an old man!

What menu items need to be retired?

I hadn't thought of this, but you're right. Most of the time they're rubbery and cold, so what's the point?

I'd really like to see, and I haven't yet found it locally, for a restaurant to offer a bonafide cheese plate, with a changing, seasonal array of local or imported quality cheeses. That would be more satisfying than a deep-fried wad of yellow rubber...

Idiotic things you do in the kitchen

One of my cardinal rules: Do not cook bacon while shirtless. (Unless you want your belly to look like it has chicken pox.)

does anyone still buy instant coffee?? canned vegetables?? condensed soup??

Ironically, it looks like you may have, ahem, opened a can or worms here.

I'm with you on this one. I'd rather enjoy great tomatoes for a short time in season, than choke down lousy tomatoes all year long. Same with corn on the cob.

The Little Grill Collective last night for their AYCE Mexican plate. The plate consisted of an assortment of Mexican inspired foods – a taquito, cheese quesadilla and a different sort of taco made with, what seemed to me, small pita instead of a tortilla. Sides were shredded cauliflower slaw, beans and rice. Once you finished the first plate, you ordered more of whatever you liked best. The food was all delicious and had a real home-made taste.

Service was slow, but the joint was packed and noisy There is such a relaxed bohemian vibe there that the clamor and the waiting were not the negatives they would have been in a more traditional restaurant setting.

Most locals have probably been there from time to time, but for you out-of-towners, the Little Grill Collective is unique among H’burg restaurants and should be given a try.

It's been a while

It’s been years since I had:
Really good fried chicken
Grilled Cheese sandwich and Tomato Soup
Stuffed Peppers
Single Malt Scotch
Crazy Horse Malt Liquor (many years way back)

And one thing I wish I could have again – the Roast Pork Chop Suey from the now defunct Yee’s Place in Harrisonburg. It was a staple dinner of mine for many years.

Harrisonburg - To Market, To Market

First up -

I recently explored the new Euro Market located in the Towncenter Shopping Center behind the mall. Although I was expecting a greater variety of European foodstuffs, it was fun poking around among the Russian, Bulgarian, and other Eastern European products. The list of things I wanted to try grew by the minute.

It’s the only place in town I know of where you can buy fresh caviar and kvass. They also have a big selection of fish (frozen) and cured meats, fresh vegetables, frozen foods, sweets and chocolates and fresh made breads and pastry. It isn’t a big store and I felt they were a bit heavy on the beverages and candy, but there was enough interesting “stuff” to keep me coming back.

The products, of course, are of foreign origin and the labels were indecipherable to me, but most had a nutrition label sticker in English which helped with identification. The staff was very pleasant as well.

Harrisonburg - To Market, To Market

We’ve already got a restaurant thread, so I thought I’d start a thread to discuss the growing variety of markets in the area…a clearinghouse of information, if you will, for locals to source the best ingredients, and for tourists to find the best locally made products.

Hiya prof - Don't know if you're looking for something specific - elegant or casual, diner or ethnic, but I remember the Spring House in Woodstock was always good, although I haven't been in awhile.

In New Market there's Johnny Appleseed Restaurant and Southern Kitchens, both have decent food for a traveler.

Tuna Salad

Ditto on the mustard, just a touch.
Sometimes I'll add a little pickle relish, and celery always.
Don't overdo the mayo.
Salt and pepper, and sometimes a pinch of curry powder.

What did you brown bag to school?

Are you sure you didn't live in my house??? I forgot about the cup-o-soup - Lipton's chicken noodle - once in a while found it's way in to my "Flipper" thermos. And, Chief Big Wheel!, wrapped in foil I do believe. (The Flipper lunchbox and Thermos were hand-me-downs from by brother and sister.)

My Mother always made cupcakes too. I don't know when this new rule started, I guess it because of some liability issue, I don't know. All I do know is that it's a shame!

Egg salad and Funyuns...bet no one wanted to be her study partner!

Toxic Food Combinations [moved from General Topics board]

Thanks for the responses everyone, they dovetail nicely with my own. These ideas seemed so preposterous to me, I had to ask for a second opinion. I knew these guys were kooks the more I scoffed in disbelief. With their pseudo-science malarkey, it sounds like something better suited for the Flat Earth Society!

And I agree chowser, dessert BEFORE dinner, is a mighty fine idea!

What did you brown bag to school?

I don't know where you live, but in my locale (Shenandoah Valley), parents are forbidden to send any homebaked goods to the school (not for a personal lunch of course, but for "parties" for the class.) If a snack is to be provided it HAS to be wrapped in cellophane, thus...store bought.
