alma de cuba - what's good?

i actually went to alma de cuba for my birthday, and the food was delicious. for appetizers we got the empanadas and the royal palm dates. for entrees we ordered the one vegetarian dish and the chicken dish. also after you place the order they give some complimentary bread. we loved it all. amazing food.
for dessert we ordered the chocolate cigar which is heavenly in my opinion. from what i remember its not too chocolately - i think its actually an almond cake wrapped in chocolate or something like that. the other desserts sounded reallly good, but the cigar was truly one of the best desserts ive ever had..

I think that Bar Ferdinand seems to be a place that fits all the criteria that I'm looking for. I'll give it a try, and hopefully everything will work out ok. I'll def keep the others in mind for future visits from the parents.
Thanks a lot everyone for all the advice!

i liked horizons a lot - the food was very good and service was also good - not as fun and lively as the others but i did like it
also i went to distrito for my birthday this year and it is really good food
bar ferdinand and cuba libre sound good but my brother is 10 - so would it be kid friendly?

here are some of the places im looking into right now

- horizons
- kanella
- modo mio
- rangoon

any others i should have on there??

i was talking to my mom and it seems like she wants to go to a nice place - so i want her to be impressed with it. we took my dad to tequilas for his bday so i dont want this place to be any less than that in all aspects. i know shes really looking forward to it and i want to make it a special night for her.

thanks for the recommendations! but turns out now is just going to be my family so 5 of us - and i have a younger brother who is 10 so i dont wanna go to a place that isnt too kid friendly either - but ill look into modo mio and horizons i love
i talked to my mom about horizons but shes not a big 'tofu' fan and didnt seem to excited for 'vegan' food - which i explained to her was pretty amazing but i just want to take my mom (and i know she wants to go to) a nice place - shes loved tequilas and continental so hopefully ill be able to find a place similar to those - both food wise and service wise
also if there are any places in the manayunk area which may be better than center city restaurants they could work as well

thanks for the ideas!
i have heard rangoon is good. ive actualyl been to distrito on my birthday this year and the food was very good. but since i went there id like to go to somewhere different. so many differnt restaurants so figure might as well try something different.

ive also taken them to continental and they loved the food there. the atmosphere was also nice, upscale yet friendly.

i have actually been to horizons and it is quite good. ill keep it in mind. the only thing is that it doesnt exactly have a fun and lively atmosphere that i know my parents would like.

mom's 50th birthday dinner

my mom is turning 50 in april and she will be visiting me in philly on her birthday itself - being her 50th bday i wanted to make it a special dinner with my family for her and would like some recommendations of where to take her
she is vegetarian and so we would need a place with some good vegetarian options
for one of my dads birthdays i had taken them all to tequila's and they loved it there - so a restaurant similar to that would be great
mexican, italian, thai, pretty much most cuisines will work as long as the food and service are good and its moderately priced (around $20-25 a plate is doable)
thanks!

also ive taken them to lemongrass, continental, tequilas, marathon grill

dinner for 3 in center city

well i order either vegetarian dish or the chicken dish its limiting sometimes because the restaurant wont have many different options but there nothing wrong with it - and at sushi restaurants i just get veggie sushi

also how is alma de cuba?? good option?

any cuisine is fine only restrictions are that we only eat chicken and don't want to go to a byob and something in center city east would be better but any suggestions will be great
of the ones that i can remember the restaurants ive been to are buddakan, tequila's, banana leaf, el vez, distrito, penang, italian bistro, raw sushi, fuji mountain, sotto varalli, continental, pietros, horizons, buca di beppo, tria
and so looking to try something new

dessert in philly

my birthday is on monday and one of my friends is going to take me out for dessert during the week. melting pot was going to be the default place if i didnt decide on another place. so i was wondering where is philly (center city area most likely) would be another good place to get dessert. and i love dessert so id like to go somewhere good. last year for my birthday i had the milk chocolate caramel ganache tart or something like that from buddhakan and i fell in love with it. so id like to go somewhere where ill be sure to get some amazing dessert. im not sure if i wanna go to melting pot but ive never been there either. any suggestions???

my birthday dinner

well what i mean is that with say a appetizer, 3 dishes and a dessert it comes out to 70-80 dollars
in terms of ambiance i actually don't know about many restaurants in ny because i go to school in philly so ive been out to dinner here more than ny but i something thats kind of lively, not too stuffy, but still upscale in a way and good for the whole family- if that makes any sense - i love the whole set up of buddakan and restaurants like it in philly

my birthday dinner

hi my 21st birthday is coming up soon and i wanted to go for dinner in the city with my family to celebrate it with them the weekend im home - there would be five of us - my parents, my sister and younger brother (who is 10)
my mom is vegetarian and my sister and I only eat chicken/turkey and no other meats/fish
my brother would probably share from us and we would like to keep it as moderately priced as possible around 20-30 a person for the rest of us
i tried looking through the boards here but im not really sure where we could go

i would love some recommendations for a place that a) has vegetarian options b) within the price range c) a nice ambiance d) a place everyone will enjoy

i have no preference as to what type of food - the only two types i dont wanna go to are italian and indian (need a change from them)

thank youu

sister's birthday dinner with family

hi looking for a moderately priced restaurant to take out my sister to for her birthday with the family - not looking to go for mexican food - but open to italian, fusion cuisine, something on that line - as long as its not too expensive and also my mom is vegetarian so any place that has somewhat decent vegetarian options would be nice
open to all and any suggestions - thanks
