Getting a little desperate - Birthday Dinner Saturday
Thanks I had not heard of that site!
As for the last minute comment, i've been trying since tuesday, and was secretly hoping my family would take charge, but alas they didn't.

Getting a little desperate - Birthday Dinner Saturday
Hey Chowhounders!
Its my birthday, and I have no plan, but am supposed to meet my family for dinner. I've been calling a ton of my favs and either they don't take reservations, or no reservations for six after 5 or before 930.
My family is coming in from out of town, so this doesn't work.
I was hoping to stay west-end (High park, roncesvalles, queen west west, parkdale
Price: 17 to 25 a main
Bistro, french, fusion, a little upscale, patio a bonus
Takes Reservations, and might have space.
Thank you!

best salads in Toronto- 2012
Its rare that I have time, but if i'm at yonge and bloor I love the Nicoise at Salad House in Cumberland. The large is two meals for seven dollars!
Joey's - Eaton Centre
Been to the Eaton Centre location a number of times, for drinks and food. I quite enjoy their fish tacos - there is a rare tuna and a fried white fish. Everything is pretty pricey and the tacos won't fill you up. I usually eat a sandwich before I go and just get the tacos. The calamari is a large serving and good for sharing.
sorry, haven't tried the burger.

Yukon at 1592 Queen West
Stopped by for a drink yesterday after a jane's walk. Its very new, and the service was nice and charming. They have quite a vinyl collection so i'm not sure if that's all they play. The menu, though we didn't indulge, was predominantly oysters, olives, meat and cheese platters. Two women who were there seemed to be really enjoying it.

For lunches I like El Sombrero at Hurontario and Brunel

Two Part Chicago Visit in April
Thanks for the suggestions - and the geography lesson :)
Easter Saturday-Brunch/Lunch with Nana
I am trying to arrange a brunch for my family on the long weekend saturday. I have a couple of requirements. There will be six of us and would prefer a place which we can make reservations.
Accessible - my grandmother is using a walker and we need somewhere that is accessible - washrooms etc.
Location: Downtown, uptown with parking close (see walker)
Food: obviously i would like some good food, but we are with an older adult, so nothing "ethnic". Licensed! (please) and nice service.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Two Part Chicago Visit in April
Hi Fellow Chowhounders!
I am coming from Toronto for nearly a week and am visiting with two seperate groups, The first is my active, sixty-something mother who is currently revisiting her hippy roots and is vegan, but might be tempted a little on vacation. The second group are some urban planning graduate students, so cheap and cheerful might be in order.
We are staying by "Miracle Mile" - sorry my geography is a little off. With my mom we have a transit pass and would be willing travel.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Former "Studio Restaurant" at Church and Carlton
Noticed that its now a thai/japanse (?) restaurant. Has anyone given this place a try. (sorry the name was kinda generic)
thanks

Mystery place at Dundas West & High Park
I did speak to him about the menu, but that was months ago and i remember that it sounded rather ambitious to me. (local, changing daily). I think it will end up as more of a bar, in particular with the stage and the lack of tables. He said he's looking at the end of feb as an opening but, not to be critical, i think he was aiming for september.
Mystery place at Dundas West & High Park
Are you talking about 3030 Dundas West - with the big roll up glass garage door? If so its going to be a bar/resto. The owner, it begins with a J, has finished the kitchen and interior - i think he's waiting on inspections. I saw the inside a few months ago - its really big (for the Junction) and has a stage at the back.
ISO plastic/inexpensive champagne flutes in TO
I agree with the Ikea suggestion - i bought a dozen or two and have had them for a few years. I got blue ones and i use them all the time for deserts and champagne. They have held up very well and look better than dollar store versions
Where to Buy Shells for Coquilles St. Jacques?
Hi,
Looking to make this for christmas, but so far the only ones i've spotted were $3.50 each, which seemed a little pricey for a one-off meal.
Anyone know of anywhere cheaper, preferably downtown toronto?
Thanks

Veloute Bistro in the Beaches
He was cooking at Foodstock and was one of the first booths we visited. I ate a lot of things while there, be he stood out as I grew up in the beaches my family were rather surprised to find him there.
He served a small pastry shell (more like a popadom) filled with root vegetable, topped with salmon (which he was cooking in small batches, fairly rare) and topped with a thin cream sauce and sturgeon roe.
He seemed very flustered and overwhealmed, barking at his staff. It was complicated dish which may have been too difficult given the situation. That said, it will be an interesting addition to the beaches and I didn't realize that he was at peppinos back then.
Aruba Heat Hot Sauce
Hi,
A friend of mine a few months ago gave me a three pack of their hot sauces, and I ended up loving their BBQ Heat one. This morning I had the last of it with eggs. Does anyone know where I can buy this product?
Thanks!

Haliburton Highlands
I agree with the Fiery Grill, had a great pulled pork, but its not what it used to be. In Haliburton village I had quite a good meal at Aniz this summer. Everyone at my table was impressed with the food. The service was nice if a little inexperienced.
In the past had good meals at the Bonnie View Inn, but didn't get to visit it this summer. Also visited Rhubarb, which has a great view, but I really felt that for the price I would have expected a better meal and better service.

30th birthday party - dinner and drinks on a wednesday?
Hi,
Its my sister's 30th in a few weeks and she is looking for somewhere downtown to do dinner and drinks. Nothing too crazy, mid-range price. Its also on a wednesday, so that might be an issue.
She is planning for 12 to 16 for dinner, probably a similar number for drinks. She mentioned The Thompson.
Any thoughts?
YOU GOTTA GO TO BARQUE FOR BBQ!
Went for the first time on saturday with a large group. Our server was very patient with a slightly rowdy party.
I tried one chicken wing we ordered for the table - and i do not like chicken, but it was amazing.
I ordered the sweet miami heat half rack with caesar salad and the pickle plate. The ribs were great with a bit of heat, the caesar was almosst overwealmed by the rest of the meal and could have used a bit more dressing, but the bacon and crutons were great. The pickle plate was almost like art. Two pieces of bread, a parsely butter, pickled beets, beans, carrots, califlower, turnip (?) and peppers.
I was stuffed and had help. Overall really enjoyed it.
Montgomery Inn's Farmer's Market
I went today around five pm (the market runs 3 to 7) and there was not a single fruit or vegetable to be found. All of the vendors (about ten of them) were selling pre-made products, cheese or honey. I was so disapointed since its the closest one to my house.
Are things just that late and there is no produce or do other markets carry produce?
Thanks!

Chow -oriented day trip? Suggestions Please
Wow these are great! I would love to combine the food aspect with some nature/hiking or a park, so if you have any ideas for that... But i'll definitely look into these. We both really like fish, so the Port Dover one sounds interesting!
Chow -oriented day trip? Suggestions Please
My bff and i are planning a day trip on friday, but are struggling to decide where to go. We both love to eat and though perhaps a food destination would work. Looking for something a maximum of two hours out of downtown.
Any cusine, mid-range prices and probably open in the day would all be good.
Thanks in advance!

The Junction and surrounding areas -- Recommend Me Anything
I have to say I really like Curry Twist and Little Fish. There is a new sushi joint that i haven't tried yet at Dunas and Pacific, but so far i hear great things. A lot of mediocre thai- I agree that Silk has gone downhill. A few places are opening (or are rumoured to be) which hopefully will provide some variety.
As for food stuff - Junction Fromagarie is nice, a little rich for my student budget, but the couple who own it also own Delight next store - lovely chocolates and ice cream.
Welcome to the neighbourhood!

New Sushi Restaurant Opening in the Junction
Thanks sway - I have been hesitating until someone i knew went. I will probably grab dinner tonight. Finally sushi in the junction - if only we could get a green grocer!
Great salads in Brampton/ Mississauga
I second the Longo's option. I have worked in Peel Region, often on the road and struggle for healthy options - a well stocked, and carefully selected options can be very healthy.
New Sushi Restaurant Opening in the Junction
Hey i was walking on dundas west and noticed a sign for a new sushi spot opening here - its were the Bronto Burger was at Pacific. Anyone got any intel on when its opening or if its a chain? It would be nice to have sushi in the hood.
Thanks

Eats at Dundas West and bloor street
Unfortunately not a whole lot right there- but plenty you can walk to. I haven't been in a while bit but
yasis's place on Wallace does breakfast. I second Cool Jand of a Girl in the junction- also Curry Twist and the pho spot at pacific and Dundas. had AYCE sushi at Wasabi- keele & bloor- not bad.
It's kinda an unfortunate spot but the coffee at Hula Girl was hood.

Rolling Rock on Tap
West 50 in Mississauga (Hurontario & Burnhamthorpe) has it on tap, along with the Duke of Richmond(?) I think that's which Duke it is - the one at the south-west end of the Eaton Centre.

NY Subway Will Be Closing After This Weekend - Building to Be Torn Down
My favorite was/is the cauliflower - i am totally making a run to get one last taste!
Indian on Dundas West of keele
Curry Twist all the way!!! The owner is really nice - open kitchen, friendly staff. He has a wonderful touch with fish, and i always enjoy my meals there. I've tried North of Bombay and wasn't impressed. Never visited High Park Curry House (which i think is the other one you mentioned) no one ever seems in there, so i've taken it as a sign.
Yes, i live in the area and i am sick of the middle of the road thai. The pho place on pacific is decent too, quite fresh and always busy. I've been to the taco night at La Revolution (sp) and thought that it was great! There are a few lunch spots in the neighbourhood which close at fourish - which is a shame as they are quite good. (Little Fish & Cool Hand of a Girl).
