Hammersmiths

I did see them and was surprised because I am not THAT picky. Yes it was July 2011. And I left out the part about how hot and smelly/greasy it was because it is not their fault they did not have A/C yet. I am sure they have added many things to the menu (there was no press coffee when we were there). It is never good to judge a place when they are really new but the prices and my kids' disappointment will prevent us from returning for a family breakfast or brunch.

Hammersmiths

I hate to rain on any parades but we tried this place when it opened and were disappointed We met the owner while walking by the night before and he showed us around and was very pleasant. We had such high hopes. I realize they had just opened but...the portions were small, even the toast. Our kids wanted more toast. My daughter's over easy eggs were cooked solid, my omelette was small and definitely inferior to omelettes at our usual places, the coffee was not great, the sausages expensive and unbelievably dry, bland and overcooked. The best part of the meal was the lemonade. All in all, we felt that $60 for two adults and two kids to eat breakfast and still be hungry was just too steep. We will stick with our favourite places: Vi Vetha, Buffet at Whitlock's, New York Cafe, Tulip, Leslieville Diner...

Why are there such disparate reviews of Tomi Kro?

I have never had a bad or even mediocre meal there. The food is great and I usually like the service, although some of the men are a little on the casual side and tend to hang out on the curb in between serving. I have dined many, many times at Tomi Kro and recommend it. Try the tenderloin.

Chinatown East (Gerrard) Recommendations?

Hi Sinfulia, I have lived in the area since 1999 and agree with many of the posts below but I'd like to add Sum Kee Noodle House. 1060 Gerrard Street East (416) 465-4167‎. They are one business west of the northwest corner of Gerrard and Jones. The food is delicious, cheap and fast. My only complaint is that while you can request no added msg, their meat has already been seasoned with it. I have not found it overwhelming and I eat the food regularly.

The elderly couple that owned and cooked there have recently sold to a young couple and they have kept the original menu and added some "Canadian Chinese" food. Chicken can be subsituted for pork for a nominal fee. They are polite and efficient and already know me on the phone, which is nice.

I can recommend about the following items that are all terrific. Hot and Sour soup, shrimp wonton noodle soup, spicy (chilli) fried squid, cashew chicken, braised chilli bean sauce chicken, beef with brocolli, egg noodles with meat and veg, chow mein (tastes very different from the usual bland version ), Chinese broccoli, malaysian noodles (curry), sliced spicy fillet mignon with thick noodles (I forget what they call this dish but it is on the back of the takeout menu), the fried rice is great, kids we had over recently raved about the chicken balls (a new addition to the menu) and the General Tsao chicken (I found both too sweet but kids like that) and the shrimp dishes are great. You can order anything with extra heat and they will amp it up, which is a bonus. Enjoy.

Strickland Meats on Greenwood?

This place is very special. The men are so lovely. It is like an old-fashioned family business. (I think I smell bryl cream in there). They make their own sausages and the German onion sausages are amazing.
