Gonoe Sushi (North York)
i work in the area and this had been one of my favourites however, the chef and perhaps the owner had changed back about a year ago. I went from frequenting once every 2 wks to not having been there in over 3 mos.
The cooked menu has changed and the rolls/sushi are not made with the same level of quality. While better than Tako next door, it's a shadow of what it formerly was.
Krispy Rolls-yummee
ok, i went to Pho Saigon today and their pho is too loaded w/ msg for me to ever want to go back
Best Korean Restaurants in T.O.?
Gu Mi @ Lawrence & pharmacy is a nice little surprise for the area. They do Japn as well but the Korean fare is much better (run by koreans).
Where to buy dried white beans? (Toronto or Canada)
Noah's carries a wide variety of organic beans. You can most definitely substitute canned for dried - rinse them really well though as canned beans tend to have a lot of salt. The cooking time will be reduced somewhat too.
Krispy Rolls-yummee
I would absolutely agree with that. The lunch specials are watered down versions of the real thing.
Ironically, Krispy Rolls doesn't actually have great rolls. Their spring roll and cold rolls are mediocre at best. I do believe they offer the make-your-own options but I haven't had the opportunity to try it there.
The lamb stew and hue style pho are both very good. I've been fond of the curry chicken pho as well.
It's good for the area its in.
Keg Or Tulip - which would you choose??
for a bday, i would recommend the keg on york but I'd take the Tulip for the spaghetti & meat sauce alone. Go on a wkend and get their roasted lamb shoulder.
plus i feel so butch for eating w/ the hell's angels
Terroni on Yonge
Agreed, the yonge st location is absolutely horrendous. Unattentive servers AND managers (the training must be inherited). Orders in the kitchen processed w/ stupefying inefficiency - tables that ordered well after you may get their food well BEFORE you. Undercooked pizza - there's nothing I hate more than gooey pizza dough (and on a thin crust no less).
Nope - never ever ever ever ever going back.
Armenian Kitchen @ Victoria Park/Eglinton
Still ridiculously cheap
Lots of the food has been mentioned although i find their falafel good but not fanastic.
Humous and Ganoush are solid - one of the best in the city
Try the sujok, a little salty but w/ dab of spread, it's very tasty
Lentil soup is a must
Lamb kabob sandwich has always done well for me
Fried eggplant - very scrumptious
Mimi's, Gerrard and Logan
their bbq sausages are worth it
try the DIY rolls
and their bbq chicken and quiche on rice is an excellent choice too
their pho is average
Does 'quality' beef jerky exist?
go to macau
they have streets full of jerky vendors - beef, pork, chicken, ostrich, veal, spicy, sweet, black pepper, whatever
feel free to sample all you like b/f buying
Your Favourite "Instant" Ramen?
i'm a big fan of Sau Tau brand - they're a HK brand and the noodles are more like egg/wonton noodles. The noodles are not deep fried which helps keep the calorie (and fat) count down (< 300 cal/serving vs something comparable to a big mac).
looks like this: http://www.ctfood.se/u_img/1220_inst_NK_abalone_chk_flv.jpg
my favs are the wonton noodle flavour and the chicken w/ abalone
they also come in the thicker egg noodle and rice noodle
w/ traditonal ramen - nong shim's shin cup korean spicy noodle is good as is the nissin sesame chicken or garlic pork stir-noodle (or lo-mein)
T&T Supermarket to open downtown Toronto at Waterfront
this is fantastic new, i won't have to drive up to Steeles & Warden every wkend
Opal - queen street
Long overdue review:
food was fantastic with generous portions, service was prompt and friendly, jazz was phenomenal.
Starters - had the indonesian crab cake and organic green salad w/ serrono ham. Crab cake was very sweet w/ @ least a heaping tablespoon of tobiko on top over a bed of microgreens. Very generous portion of quality serrono ham ontop of a heaping pile of salad. Both were excellent.
Mains - ostrich tenderloin and my friend had the magret (duck breast) w/ foie gras. The piece of foie gras was superb. Both dishes were delicious but i found the duck to be the favoured of the 2.
didn't do dessert but there's several lindt chocolate options - i'm not a fan of lindt.
i'd recommend this most definitely
Best prime rib in toronto
so sorry that i didn't see this until now
HARBOUR 60!
it's a double cut and it's succulent! you can actually split the double cut and it's more than plenty for 2 ppl.
keg does a good one for the price, but it doesn't compare to 60
Jewish Restaurant - anyone?
don't get the liver and onions @ centre st - dry like leather. Stick to the "old fashioned" smoked meat.
Korean restaurants
Gumi @ lawrence and pharmacy - they have japn on the menu too but the korean stuff is what you go for.
Ka-chi in Dundas/Spadina town in probably my favourite quick eatery. The pork bone soup and dolsot bimbimbap are great quality. I'd rather work my way over here than go up the street to Yummy BBQ. However, the egg-fried beef @ Yummy is very tasty.
Cynthia's Chinese Restaurant in Thornhill: Any Good?
Cynthia's caters to the Cdn-Chinese food market. If you're going for chicken balls, sweet & sour pork, chow mein and the likes, it's pretty good quality. They're more upscale than your regular chinese take out and it reflects in the price.
They will do authentic chinese dishes but at an astronomical price. They will cater traditional chinese banquets e.g. shark's fin.
Cynthia and her husband are absolute dolls
Business Dinner Near Dundas & University
hemispheres could be good if it's not out of your price range
Prince Of Egypt -- Long
Thanks, this is useful guys. I've been wanting to check this place out.
Dinner Around Yonge/Eglinton or Rosedale Area
Lakes does a really good butternut squash soup w/ walnuts
dungeness vs. blue crab
i'll take either as long as they're fresh, alive & kicking. Ain't nothing worse than serving a crab that's been dead for more than an hr.
Either one I like served straight up although dungeness can be quite good in garlic.
best chinese in markham
Devonshire Place on Steeles (ok, i think it's technically scarborough) is now a chinese restaurant. It was formerly a steakhouse and the decor hasn't changed.
Went for dimsum this wkend, definitely some interesting, out of the ordinary choices (i.e. grouper& chive rice noodle roll, tempura squash and prince mushrooms). Not cheap ($110 for 5 ppl).
Anyone tried the pub at College Park?
Pogue Mahone?
The veal sandwich is suppose to be very good. I usually go for drinks so I haven't tried their food.
best chinese in markham
It's good
Their crab and pork dumplings are a farce, stick to the regular pork ones. They're probably the best in the city but i've definitely had better in asia
boston chowhound looking for tasty wknd lunch near delta chelsea
Cheap & cheerful suggestion - nab a falafel from the Donair place (i'm sorry i forget the name, it's got a big yellow sign next to the Big Slice) on Yonge St just a few doors south of Gerrard on the east side. It's literally right outside the side entrance of the hotel.
oh wait... i just saw the date of the post. o^_^o
Genghis Khan's Mongolian Grill
try it for the novelty but you can prolly make better stir-fry's @ home. Good for big parties and it's AYCE. The cooked food buffet is palatable at best. It gets a big MEH from me.
Trick is when gathering all your ingredients is to grab 2 bowls since most of it shrinks during cooking. Good strategy for when it's busy to nullify the nuisance of waiting in line again.
