Aruba: casual and on a budget

Hi 'hounds,

My wife and I are planning a trip to Aruba and wanted to know of recommended places for casual meals, with good food and (relatively) inexpensive.

There are tons of great reviews on here but they seem a bit geared toward high-end restaurants - which we have nothing against and certainly plan to patronize from time to time - but were just hoping to have some options for something quick and casual, but a bit more interesting than the hotel buffet.

We'll probably be staying in the Palm Beach or Eagle Beach area.

Many thanks in advance.

Recs for Humacao (Southeast Puerto Rico) area?

Heading back to Humacao for the holidays and was wondering if there had been any new developments.

And thanks for the great recs previously, hounds!

Safari DC (Kenyan) experiences?

Hi 'hounds,

Has anyone visited Safari DC, a Kenyan place on Georgia Ave NW?

Any information appreciated.

Thanks!

Anything decent at Lauriol Plaza?

Thanks for the tips everyone! I had Mariscos a la Catalana and it was actually pretty good... the shrimp & scallops could have been fresher but the tomato & garlic sauce was nice.

Anything decent at Lauriol Plaza?

"I don't know where you are only hearing bad things"

Tyler Cowen's blog, yelp, lots of bad reviews here.

But I'd be happy to learn otherwise!

Anything decent at Lauriol Plaza?

Against my better judgment I have accepted an invitation to dinner at Lauriol Plaza, about which I have only heard bad things. Is there any hope of getting a decent -- or, dare to dream, good -- meal here?

Thanks 'hounds!

Tomorrow's Wall Street Journal...

names Speed's as the best hot dog in America.

Good for Speed!

good quick breakfasts

I actually have exactly the same question -- right in the same area even -- but for lunch instead. Same idea: something fast and portable; willing to pay a little extra for speed and convenience; doesn't have to be super-Chowish.

Best N. Carolina-style BBQ in Boston Area?

NC native here: Blue Ribbon is the best NC Q (eastern style, of course, we won't mention that other stuff) I've had anywhere outside of NC, and is one of the few places outside of NC that would do fine in NC.

Not a fan of Redbones.

Where to buy Flor de Cana rum in Boston, NYC or Chapel Hill?

Wow, that's an awesome website! Thanks a lot.

Where to buy Flor de Cana rum in Boston, NYC or Chapel Hill?

Sorry, I don't remember exactly, that was a long time ago :(
My guess is it was around $20-$25 for the 12-year... maybe a little less?

Where to buy Flor de Cana rum in Boston, NYC or Chapel Hill?

Thanks Scottes, I'll ask my sister to stop by Astor. Any idea what price I should be expecting for the 12 or 21 year in the States? I've only ever purchased it in Central America, where I'd reckon it's cheaper.

Where to buy Flor de Cana rum in Boston, NYC or Chapel Hill?

Any suggestions?

Craving Hush Puppies!

I-95 S to Richmond, I-85 S through Durham, exit on NC-86 south, look for Allen & Son on your right about 2 miles down the road.

:)

Mediocre experience at 224 Boston (Dorchester)

I had a less than stellar experience at 224 Boston this weekend.

The space is great - an old place, exposed beams, beautiful bar and decor; everyone was very friendly; we were seated right away. It also wasn't as cramped as I'd heard.

Apps: the grilled eggplant was OK and the grilled peach with prosciutto was very good.

Entrees: this was the biggest disappointment of the night. Nothing was bad, but nothing was really good either. I had the veal medallions, which were a little dry and not very flavorful. My wife had the shrimp and coconut ravioli, which was probably the best dish of the night but again, nothing exciting.

Dessert: creme brule was good although I think it had been prepared earlier and then refrigerated (I prefer the top layer to be hot).

Service was very friendly but slow with a couple of items forgotten!

Overall everything was decent but not really the experience I was expecting given the good things I'd heard and certainly not what I think you should get for $50 per person (including everything).

I really wanted to like this place and will give it one -- but only one -- more chance. Any suggestions on better dishes to order?

New(ish) Guatemalan Bakery in Dorchester

Hi, I've passed by a place on Freeport Street & Dot Ave (close to DBar) called Panaderia y Reposteria Chapina (Guatemalan Bakery and Desserts) a couple of times. Window signs promise baked goods, snacks / appetizers and desserts. It looks intriguing, but I don't know anything at all about Guatemalan food. Has anyone visited this place? Any general thoughts about tasty traditional Guatemalan chow or suggestions on things to order?

Thanks 'hounds!

Breakfast & Dinner chow, Thomas Circle?

Yeah, sounds like breakfast near the conference isn't going to happen. I was thinking of getting up early and hopping the Metro over to Eastern Market for breakfast at Market Lunch. Various online reviews say they open at 7:30.

Breakfast & Dinner chow, Thomas Circle?

Thanks very much DC 'hounds!

Breakfast & Dinner chow, Thomas Circle?

Hi DC 'hounds,

I will be attending a conference next Tuesday and Wednesday near the Washington Plaza Hotel in Thomas Circle. Lunch will be provided, but I'd love to check out some interesting chow in the area for breakfast or dinner. Also advice for after-dinner drinks would be appreciated.

It'll probably be a small group, say 2-4 for breakfast, 4-6 for dinner.

I'm on a limited per diem, so moderate to cheap preferred.

Thanks!

West Indian Roti

I live near this place and have been meaning to pay a visit, but I know very little about roti -- what's good, what to order, how to avoid making a fool of myself by saying something dumb. Could anyone be kind enough to provide a primer for the interested-but-timid?

Recs for Humacao (Southeast Puerto Rico) area?

Heading back in a couple of weeks -- any recommendations, Chowhounds?

Lucky Cafe in Dorchester

This place (Lucky Cafe) is just around the corner from my apartment. I've had the mixed barbeque (R1) a couple of times and really enjoyed it, but would like to explore the menu a bit more. I don't know much about the cuisine, though - any specific suggestions?

Thanks 'hounds!

PS - What does "There's some chow zeitgeist woojoo going on here" mean?

Best BBQ?

I'm suprised you didn't like Blue Ribbon. I'm from NC, and it's the best ENC-style I've had away from home.

What style Q do you like?

Is Speed still serving?

Thinking of heading over today... is he still around or has he packed it in for the winter?

Recs for Humacao (Southeast Puerto Rico) area?

Hi Carribean 'hounds - my in-laws are moving back to PR in a month, so we will be heading down there a lot. They will be living near Humacao in the southeastern part of the island.

Any recommendations for tasty chow? We're interested in anything good - fancy, humble, kiosk, whatever. My wife is bilingual and I do pretty well in Spanish, so no-english places are fine (even preferred). We'll have access to a car.

Thanks!

Trader Joe's Wine

Just wanted to say thanks to the folks who resurrected this thread. I picked up a few of the wines reccomended here - the Vinho Verde and the Villa Borghetti - and liked them a lot. The gentleman working at the store also recommended a 2004 Dr. Beckermann Reisling which was very good for just $4.50.

I hope folks will keep posting on this thread!

Good $10 (and under) Wines in Boston? (esp. at TJ's)

Sorry, didn't know about the Wine board. I see this is being covered in other posts. Apologies!

Edit - although now that I am reading that thread it seems to be over a year old... so any updates appreciated.

Good $10 (and under) Wines in Boston? (esp. at TJ's)

Hi 'hounds,

I saw this old thread from 2002
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/show/141777
and figured it was time for an update, so...

Any ideas on what the best cheap - well, not cheap so much as _inexpensive_ - wines in Boston area shops are these days?

Any particular pointers for the Cambridge Trader Joe's (Mem Drive) would be especially welcome!

Thanks, and happy 'hounding...

Shanti - Dorchester

Does anyone know if they have any regional specialties (I think they are Bengali or perhaps Bangladeshi?) or, better yet, any "not-on-the-menu" goodies?
