Breakfast in Calgary
Depending on where around DT, I would recommend either Red's Diner on 4th street (just north of 17th ave) or, a little further away, Dairy Lane Cafe on 19th Street NW in Hillhurst. Neither has done me wrong, but if I had to chose, I'd give the nod to Dairy Lane.
Both are along the lines of casual cafes and nothing fancy. Anything you're looking for in particular?

Lunch Rec for Coeur d' Alene
Greetings!
I need to arrange a lunch for a group of about 20 in early Sept and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Nothing particular in mind and we're only passing through town, so no specific area required. Looking for some type of "local gem" that we likely wouldn't find on our own. Please Help! TIA!
Quarry, Canmore - closed replaced with...
Mixed feelings about that. I never enjoyed any of the over-priced fare at Quarry, but I really wish it wasn't replaced by a GE. Missed opportunity for something more interesting to open in a cool spot.
How long has Quarry been closed for? I have to admit I haven't even paid attention to that spot for quite a while.
Fergus & Bix, Marda Loop, Cgy
I was actually at the Trop for lunch on Thursday, mostly out of curiosity.
The re-done interior is nice, but nothing special or different than what's already in the area. My friend had a pizza that looked (and he said was) above average for pub 'za and I had a chicken sandwich that was passable, but again, nothing special. Unfortunately, it was more of the same that can already be found in the area.
23 - there is nothing specifically wrong with any of the pubs in ML, but I find that instead of having one go-to place that I enjoy, I choose based on which pub I'm least bored with at any given time.
Fergus & Bix, Marda Loop, Cgy
Well, thanks all for the heads-up. Doesn't sound like anything to get excited over... Not that "O" was either.
Marda Loop is severely lacking a decent pub. Union Station - meh. OJs - meh. Garrison - Not bad, but pretty meh. This is disappointing.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with Fergus & Bix. Can anyone share anything more on it? This is a good thing?
Three Weeks Remaining to Eat Gluten - FOREVER! What would you include??
Couple things...
If you're basically an unconfirmed Celiac, won't stuffing yourself with gluten turn into a rather terrible experience?
Secondly, Celiac disease seems to be EXPLODING. Everywhere you turn lately, there's a gluten free option, alternative, etc.
Many of the items on your list can be made to be gluten free. It takes a while to trial-and-error your way through new or tweaked recipes, but Celiacs is by no means as difficult a lifestyle as it was even three years ago.
I honestly didn't realize how easy it is to live gluten-free until I tried - my ex-gf had a severe case of Celiacs which basically meant I might as well have ;) As I said before, it's a little tough at first but you get the hang of what adjustments need to be made pretty quickly and it just becomes second nature.
I know this doesn't really address your question, but I wanted to let you know it's not as bad as it first seems :)
YYC Fiddleheads
Saw some at Sunterra (Britannia location) yesterday... $3.99/package I believe.
I've never tried them... maybe I should go back :)
Calgary - Petite: A little too warm, but great food
I was also there last week for dinner and ate the same things as you, alley - great minds... :)
One of the servers took a seat at the table next to us as we were waiting for our desserts. He explained the heat and smoke issue was due to it being a heritage building (is it?) and they weren't able/allowed to "punch a hole in the brick for extra ventilation". There were a few times throughout the evening where it got a little smokey and hot, but it was easily remedied by someone opening the door. I'm very willing to overlook things like this, but I know others on this board aren't and that could be quite a problem for Petite. Surely there's something that can be done...
Teatro Calgary - Experience with Private Functions?
Sweeterpea... forbsie1 said he wants to spend "approx. 50/per person, totalling (sic) 2500 for my team".
I can't think of too many private rooms that can accommodate 50 people...
Kensington gossip - Calgary
There is a take-away option, so I guess that's what makes it "express"...
Kensington gossip - Calgary
I stumbled across "Royal Kabab Express" last week when I was on my way to Shawarma King and decided to give the new place a try. There is dine in and take out options, and since I wasn't in a rush, I dined in. I had a "Sultani Kabab" meal at $18.50 which included basmati rice, grilled tomatoes and a Persian Salad consisting of tomato, cucumber, onion, mint and lime juice. The kababs were Kubideh (ground beef) and Barg (steak). Afterwards, I treated myself to a delicious little baklava.
Flavours were great and portions were sharable in size, but I still felt the price was a tad high considering what the meal actually consisted of.
The space is nice enough and clean, as you'd expect an "everything-new" restaurant to be.
I'll likely be back, but will probably stick to ordering a more reasonably priced pita wrap, even though the "super" size wraps get up to $13.50.
Overall a quality alternative to the other Middle Eastern options in the area... though I would say their pricing will be the biggest hurdle to attracting customers (during my time there, two groups came in and left again after looking at the prices... heading across the lot in the direction of Shawarma King).

Gluten Free in Calgary & Western Canada
Hmmm, I'll mention The Coup... as a dedicated carnivore, it never occurred to me, but makes sense that they would have many GF options.
Does anyone have any other information on A Tasty Menu re-opening? I did a quick search and couldn't find any news... the phone still just rings and there's no mention on their website.
30 hours in Vancouver!
Last time I stayed at the Met, I had great food at Diva (at the Met). Considering your time constraints, I'd think either breakfast or your last (early) dinner would be well accommodated there.

I guess I should note that it has been a couple years since I stayed there, so things may have changed.
Gluten Free in Calgary & Western Canada
The problem is, many places that should be able to accommodate a celiac aren't entirely sure what has to be sub'd or eliminated.
Also, many places don't properly consider the sensitivity to cross-contamination and all the possibilities which can cause a severe reaction (such as fryers).
Not using flour is only the first step.
Blush Lane is fantastic (Cgy)
Where ever they get it from, I was very pleased with the quality of the produce over the weekend. It looks as though they actually pick their produce, instead of just taking a whole "batch".
Cactus Club Cafe-West Edmonton Mall
Regarding the Granville Island brews, you guys in Edmonton are either under-served or Bryn, you need to look around more. I've been able to find Granville easily here in Cow-town for at least the last 8 years... maybe I just luck out on where I buy my beer, but several smaller 'community' stores that I go to seem to stock it. Nice to see it being served in CC though!
Q Haute?
Were they busy? I haven't been the since lunch a few months back... have they changed the menu to reflect the current 'conditions' as so many others have?
Calgary: Good place to buy cast iron cookware?
Albertacf - Just a minor point, but none of my Le Cruset has the origin on the bottom (nothing at all, actually) or anywhere on them.
Maybe I have knock-offs? The boxes, which I've kept, do state "Made in France" though...
Review/Tip: Kalamata Grocery's Smoked Bacon (Calgary)
Fantastic cover!
I've never been to Kalamata, but between these posts and that clip, I'm heading there today... Love Chowhound!
Real Chicago-style pizza in Edmonton?
It may not help, but it shows that Chicago-style pizza does exist in Canada!
So, why hasn't someone done this up right? Seems like there is a demand for authentic pie that isn't being met. Has there been any place in the past that has since closed?
Your latest 'addiction'?
What's the one thing that you can't just get enough of lately?
Maybe it's a drink you just tried for the first time, or a rekindled love for a favorite appy, or a spice that you now put on everything... What ever it is, what's your current addiction?
For me, I recently started making my own hummus... I probably make 3 'batches' a week with slight tweaks. (Maybe a little amateur-ish)
Your turn!
Coming Soon to Calgary: loungeburger?
Haven't heard anything of it. I'll assume this will be similar to Tommy Burger (which would be fine by me!)...
Calgary Safeways
Don't forget that food prices have seen their greatest inflation in over 20 years recently...
Calgary Safeways
I was going to ask about Co-Op prices...
I may not be the best grocery shopper when it comes to price per item, but I sure did feel that my Sunday dinner cost more than usual (about 15%)... was it just me?
Calgary Safeways
The Garrison Safeway is my go-to... I also ran into a chicken shortage on Wednesday last week (April 15th).
I made the mistake of going to the Midtown Co-Op on Sunday for a few items... it'll be difficult going to the Garrison Safeway again...
Calgary request - really trad bars?
Thompson's at the Hyatt also fits what you're looking for.
Which Keg is better Downtown Clg
I have several business lunches and dinners between these two locations a month.
The Westin Keg has always been consistently "Keg-like" - that is, nothing really wrong, but nothing really great either.
My last trip to the 11th ave location was bad enough that 3 out of our party of 4 thought it was terrible (I personally think it may be the worst meal I've ever had in a restaurant). Our mains took nearly an hour and a half. My medium rare rib eye was near well done, yet by this time I didn't have time to send it back. The server was apologetic, but in the end, I doubt I'll ever return to that location (a sentiment shared by the majority of our group).
Route 40 soup company (Alberta)
Anyone know what's up at Route 40? I was planning a trip out there this weekend, but now the site says they're closed until further notice...
(I had posted this before and quoted a post by someone from Route 40, but both posts seem to be gone... perhaps CH boards work differently than those I'm used to)
Something like Urban Fare in Calgary?
I would think the closest thing in Calgary is Sunterra... Have you tried there?
