Where can I find the best fried chicken in DFW? 15 mile radius of Irving would be great!

Just go around the effing corner. There's one on Preston, just north of LBJ.

SSahm BBQ

(For those tired of "taco talk" on the board, consider this your warning!)

Came across the SSahm BBQ (http://www.ssahmbbq.com/) truck in the parking lot of Walgreens on the corner of Belt Line and Montfort and gave it a try for lunch today.

They serve "gourmet Korean tacos" (ala Kogi in Los Angeles), along with Korean-inspired quesadillas, burritos, kimchee fries and instant noodles.

Admittedly, my experience with Korean food is limited, but I thought it was really, really good. I ordered the kalbi (beef) and daeji (pork) tacos. Served on two corn tortillas, with sesame soy vinaigrette salad, caramelized kimchee, cilantro, onion and a red salsa, they were fresh and flavorful. A little spicy, but that's a plus in my book. They had a pretty decent crowd there, too.

They do the whole Twitter/Facebook bit to let you know where they are going to be, but it looks like they set up at the Belt Line/Montfort location at least a couple times a week, in the Arts District and the Design District. From the schedule on their website, it looks like the do lunch, dinner and late nights.

Has anyone else tried them? How do they compare to other Korean tacos you've had?

New sandwich at Jimmy's

I'll agree with you that it gets pretty soggy, pretty quickly. I ate there, but by the time I got to the second half of the sandwich, it was pretty drenched.

Definitely not one for me to pick up and drive home to McKinney to eat!

New sandwich at Jimmy's

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I couldn't find anything about it on the board...

Went over to Jimmy's to pick up some lasagnas for Christmas and noticed that they're serving a new sandwich. The "Philly Roast Pork" has thinly sliced roast pork, au jus, cheese (for the life of me I can't remember what kind), broccoli rabe and red peppers. While I'm familiar with this type of sandwich - DiNic's at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia comes to mind - I've never had one, so I've got nothing to compare it to.

Having said that it, Jimmy's was pretty darn good. Soaked and swimming in a pool of au jus (just like a really well dipped Italian beef), the pork was tender and flavorful. The partially melted cheese and red peppers were good as well. My only "complaint" - if you want to call it that - was that it was loaded with broccoli rabe. I'm not a huge fan of it in general, so I did take a little of it off the sanwich.

Overall, it was $6.99 well spent and I'll be having it again!

Anyone else try it yet? Thoughts?

Frisco Texas

Agree with the Rudy's suggestion. Much better.

Stepping Up the Taco Game

Would love to hear more about the tour!

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Bavarian Grill - Was excited to try with a group of three friends for my birthday. Got the sausage plate as an appetizer and four different dishes. Found everything really, really bland. Maybe I just don't care for German food.

Hate to hear a second vote for Lonesome Dove...I've been looking forward to heading out to FW to try it out.

Caribbean in DFW

I've never tried, TW, but have meaning to do some experimenting with them. Maybe that was the issue at TOTI. T

hanks for the Fiesta tip!

Cavalli Pizza now open in McKinney

Just an FYI...

Considered by many to be some of the best (if not THE best) pizza in DFW, Cavalli Pizza has opened a location in McKinney at the corner of Stonebridge and Virginia Parkway.

According to their website, the McKinney location also has a wine bar.

I called and spoke to a gentleman who said they just opened last night...will have to try it to see if it lives up to the Irving location.

Caribbean in DFW

I was excited to try Taste of the Islands this weekend, but left somewhat disappointed.

While the jerk chicken was moist and flavorful, I found the stewed oxtails (which I had heard great things about) to be nothing more than a bunch of fat and bones with almost no semblance of meat.

Maybe an off night for the oxtail? Maybe they aren't as good as I'd heard?

LH, slewfoot or any other fan of TOTI - any recommendations for a return visit besides the goat curry?

[DFW] Where to buy Fresh Guava Leaves [DFW]

Looks pretty cool...Care to share how you can watch the shows? Doesn't look like I can do it from the website.

Understand if you prefer not to, but thanks in adavance!

[DFW]99 Ranch Market is Coming to Plano!

To second what luniz wrote, I just called them and they said they would be opening "In July. Soon."

[DFW]99 Ranch Market is Coming to Plano!

I was just coming to the board to see if anyone knew anything about this place, as I pass it on my way home every day.

Signs are up on the building along with a banner that says "Coming Soon!"

Eating the World Cup in DFW

Thanks for the tips!

Don't know why I thought Yao Fuzi was Japanese...I've looked at their menu a million times!

Eating the World Cup in DFW

I'll admit it. I'm a soccer fan. And on the eve of the World Cup, I have full-on World Cup fever and the only cure is some good food.

I thought I'd try something. Over the course of the next month (the length of the WC) I'd try to eat one meal at a restaurant representing each of the 32 countries. Some are going to be easy to find...some are probably going to be impossible to find in DFW. In that case, I figured I'd try my hand at making one of the "national dishes" of the country.

So...I'm looking for suggestions for my quest. Preferably not too expensive, but if I have to spend a little money, I will...Here's the list of the countries participating...Thanks in advance!

Algeria - ???

Argentina - La Carretera Agentina in OC (something better?)

Australia - there 's gotta be something better than Outback!

Brazil - Fogo de Chao (Something better? Cheaper?)

Cameroon - ???

Chile - ???

Denmark - ???

England - Something better than The Londoner?

France - Should be easy. Open to suggestions.

Germany - Bavarian Grill?

Ghana - ???

Greece - Should be easy. Open to suggestions.

Honduras - I pass a place (Baledas Express - Spring Valley and Coit) every day going to work. Says Honduran cuisine on the sign...

Italy - Should be easy.

Ivory Coast - ???

Japan - Yao Fuzi?

Mexico - Taqueria El Fuego!

Netherlands - ???

New Zealand - ???

Nigeria - ???

North Korea - Easy?

Paraguay - ???

Portugal - ???

Serbia - ???

Slovakia - ???

Slovenia - ???

South Africa - ???

South Korea - There's got to be a decent Korean place around here that serves food from both the North and South. Forgive the ignorance, but I'm assuming there is difference in the cuisine?

Spain - One of the tapas places?

Switzerland - ???

United States - What is an iconic American food? Hamburger? BBQ?

Uruguay - ???

Knife suitable for Children

I just found these knives designed specifically for children. If you haven't found any by now, here's the link. They look completely safe and claim to deliver clean cuts! They're also very inexpensive. They come in three sizes and can be purchased separately for $3.79/ea or $8.54 for the set.

http://www.mysecretpantry.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TCC50029

I think I'll order them for my 4 year old who's been asking for a "safety knife". He assumed such a thing existed since they make "safety scissors" which he loves to use. I googled "kids safety knives" and found a few products, but these look the best!

The Egg And I

Thanks for the heads up...a friend of mine was just telling me how great that place was.

Sorry, buddy, I'm going with the opinion of the Chowhounders!

Jimmy's Market

As a Fordham graduate, thanks for the Arthur Avenue reference...to think all that great food was just blocks form my dorm room...Unfortunately, at the time, all I was interested in was pizza and beer!

DFW - Leslie Brenner's "Favorite Plates of 2009"

Doesn't look like this has been discussed yet, but in this morning's Dallas Morning News, critic Leslie Brenner listed some of "her favorite plates of 2009". In no particular order:

Twig and branch flatbread at Bolsa

Matsumae zuke soba at Tei An

Cochinita pibil tacos at Taquerias el Fuego (picture of this was "above the fold" on page 1)

Tres Vasos at Samar by Stephan Pyles

No.14 Pho at Pho Pasteur

Foie gras and chicken liver moose at Smoke

"My Mussels" at Park

Lotus-wrapped sticky rice at J.S. Chen's Dimsum and BBQ

Butternut squash tart with gingersnap crust at Ellerbe Fine Foods

I haven't had any of these dishes, but I really like el Fuego and Pho Pasteur. I've been meaning to try Bolsa, Smoke and J.S. Chen;s, so maybe I have some things to try when I go.

Any thoughts on her selections? Agree? Disagree?

DFW - Taqueria El Fuego - DFW

Extended hours at El Fuego is FANTASTIC news.

I had the Tampiquena plate the last time I was there thought it was great - don't really remember if it was heavy on the pepper though...but then again, I like a lot of pepper.

Can't wait to head back over for dinner!

Thanks for the heads up.

Empanadas (Dallas)

I don't have tons of experience with savory epanadas, but whatever I had at Don Panza was pretty darn good...wish I could remember what I had!

However, I believe that they've closed for time being. They are supposed to be re-opening in (or near) the Bishop Arts District in the coming months.

New Jeff Corwin show Ext Cuisine

I'm with you...I'm not one of those FN haters. I watch a lot of shows on the network, but there are a lot that I can't stand.

It seems like all of the shows are geared towards pretty straight forward cooking with pretty mainstream ingredients...which again, is fine. Some hosts I can handle, others I can't.

I just can't see the people who are really, really into Giada, Rachel Ray and Sandra Lee being very fond of a "bizarre foods" type show.

I also agree with you that it "is such a blatant rip-off of Bizarre Foods it's pathetic." That's almost word for word what I said to my wife when I first watched it.

New Jeff Corwin show Ext Cuisine

Agreed. It seems like almost every "new" Food Network show is just a copy of some other network's popular food show. I don't mind the Food Network, but it's just starting to get really annoying.

I like Jeff Corwin when he does his nature show (the very few times I've seen it), but I agree with the original poster that at times, he seems to be disrespectful to the locals. Like in the Peru episode when he spit out some food into his hand when the cook wasn't looking or when he was wearing their traditional clothing and started talking like one of Santa's elves.

On top of that, he seems to struggle when describing the food or how it's prepared. It's like a producer tells him what to say and then he says it trying to be the "expert". He obviously knows his animals/nature, but he's very unbelievable when it comes talking about food.

I'll stick with Zimmern. Besides, this doesn't seem like a show that you're average FN viewer would be into.

Suggestions near Cedar Grove (Essex County)?

Wow! Thanks for all the great (and very detailed!) responses! We'll be there for five days and it looks like we've got plenty of great eats to keep us busy!

Brian

Suggestions near Cedar Grove (Essex County)?

Next week, my family and I are heading up from Texas to visit my parents in Cedar Grove.

Anyone have any suggestions for great pizza, hot dog, hamburger, or deli in the area? Don't mind driving bit if it's worth it, but would like to keep it within 20-30 minutes of Cedar Grove.

We've got some pretty good burgers in Texas, but it's tough to find a good deli, pizza or hot dog.

I tried searching the board, but since I'm not really familiar with many of the surrounding towns, I found it to be somewhat pointless. Couldn't find much on Cedar Grove other than a Chinese rec (which is great for me and my wife - but not for my two toddlers) and Lu Nello's, which seems to get mixed reviews.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Best Burger In Dallas/Fort Worth

Agreed...They have a giant sign near the counter that says they cook all their burgers well done and juicy. Isn't that an oxymoron?

El Ranchito

I second the salsa fresca at Gonzalez.

Best Burger In Dallas/Fort Worth

Good point!

Best Burger In Dallas/Fort Worth

Am I missing something with Five Guys? I've seen a couple mentions about them on the board and my boss ate at one in Virginia and RAVES about it. I've tried it twice now (Galleria location) and have been disappointed both times.

It's not terrible (meaning I did finish the burger) but the meat had absolutely no flavor - it tasted like ground beef slapped together and thrown on the grill. The lettuce was pale green, the tomatoes were more of a whitish-red and apparently what passes as grilled onions at Five Guys is some diced onion warmed on a grill.

Am I missing something?
