Mr. Baguette Downtown? In The Bonaventure?

Been there a few times a few years ago. It's okay but tucked away in the Bonaventure (or Malaventure, as I call it, after getting horribly lost the first time I tried to find Mr. Baguette). It takes about 10 minutes just to navigate the building, the multiple escalators and undulating passageways before you finally get to Mr Baguette, which is next to a Subway (I think) in some weird no-man's-land.

ETA: I've only had the "special sandwich" with the cold cuts etc which was perfectly fine. They give you lime and jalapeno on the side.

creamed coconut, coconut milk, powdered coconut milk, etc

I use the coconut milk powder mainly because it's shelf stable and I can "reconstitute" just the amount of coconut milk I need for a particular recipe. I usually dissolve the coconut milk powder with some warm water before adding to the dish. Sometimes I'm lazy and just sprinkle it on top but then I make sure to stir well to get rid of any lumps.

This is the brand I use: https://www.nestleprofessional.com/ne.... It's available at Indian or Sri Lankan grocery stores.

Two L.A. Hounds for Five Days. Food and Sights Itinerary?

+1 on Bayou Bakery. I live in LA and was in DC in late July -- had a tasty breakfast there. Egg and ham sandwich on house-baked biscuit, beignets and the mufuletta. Everything was delicious.

I always visit Etete when I'm in DC -- my regular order is their vegetable platter to which I add the Doro Wat (spicy chicken stew) and the Spicy Tibs (beef stew).

I also always pay a quick visit to Ravi Kabob for a taste of their chickpea curry and spinach.

This time, I also had time to visit Gharer Khabar, a Bangladeshi restaurant, and had a well-executed Mughlai Paratha.

DTLA hounds - need advice, morning DTLA run

When you get to Pershing Square Metro station, take the "4th Street" exit/escalator which puts you right on 4th and Hill (basically next to GCM).

Kazu Nori is on 4th and Main, so everything is pretty close by.

quiet place downtown for a meeting

Industriel on 6th and Grand?
They are open from 10am - 10pm on Sundays.

Close to Pershing Square metro station or 7th and Metro.

Where to hold a wake this friday in Los Angeles (likely a banquet hall, near downtown, not too expensive)??

The Our Lady of Angels Cathedral downtown has conference space and catering. In the past, I've attended work-related events which featured banquet-style seating, space for a podium/stage and catered food. I don't know if an open casket is an option and not sure what the prices are. http://www.olacathedral.org/conferenc...

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - June 2014 [OLD]

More YAYs!

These grape/tangerine/blood orange fruit frenzy bars hit the spot after the uttapams. I like the balance of the sweet and tart fruit: http://www.traderjoes.com/digin/post/...

Also enjoyed the spicy Korean-style chicken sausage: http://www.traderjoes.com/digin/post/.... Made a great meal after being browned, sliced up and sauteed with broccoli, garlic, onions, and sweet peppers.

obscure indian foods

Eaten at Apey Kade many times and can recommend the lunch and dinner buffets as well as the made to order "short eats." Also like their frozen lunch "rice and curry" and lamprais packets wrapped in banana leaves. Their facebook page will tell you when they have special menus for holidays like Memorial Day: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Apey-K...

Sri Lankan friends in Northridge recently recommended "Baja Subs Market and Deli" in Northridge for Sri Lankan food as well:

A morning to explore near Union Station - recommendations?

If a short walk to Nick's Cafe is your goal, from Union Station, take the Gold Line metro towards Pasadena and get off at the very next stop, Chinatown Station. Nick's Cafe is a 5 minute walk up Spring Street from Chinatown Station.

Take ns1 and Jase's advice and get a $5 day pass, which gives you access to all the metro lines, purple towards Koreatown, red/purple towards Langers or GCM, red towards Thai Town, gold towards Little Tokyo or East LA etc etc.

Seeking recos near convention center

You can take the subway to Grand Central Market as well. Catch the blue or expo line from Pico Station to 7th and Metro and then switch to the red or purple line (towards Union Station). Get off at Pershing Square and take the 4th Street exit which will put you right at Grand Central Market.

My Quest to Find LA's Most Expensive Banh Mi

I've only had it once. I thought the bread they use (ciabatta baked in-house, I believe) detracted from the experience because it was too hard for my taste. But the smoked salmon was good and the pickled vegetables and spicy dressing delicious.

What would you consider are your 6 essential spices?

Yes, I make it myself. Just pan-roast the whole spices separately until dark and fragrant, let cool and then grind separately before mixing together in the proportions listed.

The prepared curry powder mixes will not only use different proportions but will frequently have other spices like cardamom, cinnamon etc. I prefer to add whole cardamoms and cinnamon when cooking savory dishes.

My Quest to Find LA's Most Expensive Banh Mi

Not the most expensive, but worth adding to your list is the Smoked Salmon Banh Mi at Valerie Market at Grand Central Market. It's either $10 or $11.

Easter Brunch/Lunch - Downtown

Close to Bottega Louie is Industriel on 6th and Grand which offers Sunday Brunch: http://industrielfarm.com/menus/

If you want to venture to Little Tokyo/Arts District which is very close by there are more brunch/lunch options (Pie Hole, Wurstkuche, JiST cafe, Men Oh Tokushima, Bread Lounge etc.).

I would suggest Egg Slut or Belcampo at Grand Central Market but that might be too much with toddlers and MIL...

I have only bought baked goods at Figaro Bistrot on Broadway/6th (their caneles are delicious) but they have Sunday Brunch: http://www.figarobistrot.com/noces/in...

As noted by yinyangdi, Chaya or Border Grill would be good choices too.

What would you consider are your 6 essential spices?

Sri Lankan "roasted curry powder" (the foundation of which is a 10:5:1 mix of roasted ground coriander seeds, roasted ground cumin seeds and roasted ground fennel seeds)

Dried chile (cayenne) powder and chile flakes

Whole cinnamon, cloves and cardamom

Ground dried turmeric

Mustard and fenugreek seeds

Since the Arts District has been suggested and if you are willing to venture downtown (you could always take the subway (Red Line metro) and get off at Pershing Square), Belcampo Meat Co will be opening at Grand Central Market next week: http://www.latimes.com/food/dailydish...
