contemporary French

Thanks for all the good ideas. Our mutual friends' son had his wedding at LEspalier, and we've been to Craigie, so I think I've persuaded them to bag the French idea and go to Oleana!

31st birthday!

At 51 Lincoln, I've had the best ribeye ever, more than once.

Belmont/Watertown lunch

Kitchen on the Common is open for lunch and is a very relaxed atmosphere. Here and at Vicki Lee's, it is usually easier to linger if you go on the later side, say 1 PM.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Price is not an issue; excellent wine is. The husband of this couple is being treated to two weeks in France by some major wine society over there because of all his oeniphile activities in the Balto/DC area. Glad you mentioned that aspect of their choice.

My seriously foodie friends are coming from Baltimore in a few weeks. We have their food agenda pretty well set, but they are looking for an interesting French restaurant for a Sunday night. They are staying in Cambridge but will travel. Thanks.

Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks

You should check out my nephew's website ottomanfoodmap.com
He is getting a doctorate in Turkish history and is totally taken by the food in that ares. This site tracks middle Eastern food both thru both history and different countries, whether it has different names and preparations in different locales, etc. It's a cooperative site, so I'm sure he'd also be interested in your feedback.

Date Nut Bread

There is a small bakery in Auburndale called Breadsong that makes a moist and delicious pumpkin date bread (no nuts). I go out of my way to get a loaf whenever I am in that area.

Done with Chez Henri

I had a similar experience about a year ago and have not been back. It was the worst service I have had in a restaurant in years. It took us 45 minutes to get our order, and when we complained, the server told us condescendingly that the food was prepared to order. They didn't offer us so much as an extra slice of bread. When the food finally came, my fish was raw. Once again I complained and got another condescending explanation that they didn't serve their fish overcooked. By this time, I was past politeness and offered to call the Board of Health and let them settle the dispute. They then charged me for the fish, I refused to pay since it wasn't edible, etc. There are too many other good places to eat in the world to put up with that.

Red Dragon cheese

I've seen it at several Trader Joe's, but as you know, you can't always count on their inventory day to day. I'd also check with the Concord Cheese Shop.

Lunch near Mt. Auburn Cemetary? Cambridge, Watertown area?

If you go out Belmont Street and stay on Trapelo Road when they split, you will arrive in Cushing Square, which has both Vicki Lee's with nice sandwiches, quiche, salads, etc. and Kitchen on Common, which is very homey, friendly, and has well-prepared basic food (I LOVE their mac and cheese). No parking lot, but street parking is usually easy. This is a lovely mitzvah you are doing, and the cemetery will be stunningly beautiful at this season.

April 2012 Openings & Closings

Not a true closing, thank goodness, but just an alert that Strip-T's will be closed Monday and Tuesday for "minor renovations." They will reopen on Wednesday with a new lunch menu, which you can check out on their website.

Best Fish and Chips in Boston?

Strip-T's does have very good fish and chips, tho when they arrive, it looks as tho the fish is burnt. It's cooked to almost a mahogany color. But it tastes great.

Who makes the best oatmeal?

I live a block from Hi-Rise, and both my sister and sister-in-law swear by their oatmeal. But when my cousin from out of town went there and saw the price, she came back here for some Trader Joe's granola!

Basil Tree Catering and Cafe West Cambridge

After opening for lunch originally, Casbah is now open only for dinner. I found this out when I arrived with two carloads of hungry guests. They've since updated their website to reflect the change. When I did go, the food was good, but it was pretty bleak, especially when you think of the joyful interior at Casablanca. Unless you count my friend and me, there wasn't a lunch crowd.

Cake in Lexington--is it ever not stale?

I think "....cakes" in Arlington is not related to Cake in Lexington. The Arlington store has a sister store in Milton, and they are also related to Biga Breads in Charleston. They sell those breads in the store.

March 2012 Openings and Closings

I noticed tonight that on Mass Ave between Changsho and Temple Bar a "candy store and soda fountain" will be opening, named Evelyn and Angel's.

Best Affordable Place To Get A Wedding Cake?

Bella Moto, my favorite cakery, has indeed closed, alas.

February 2012 Openings and Closings

I stopped in today and bought a few things but haven't eaten any of them yet. They have a rotating menu and start offering the dinner selections around 5. Much of what they might not have that day is available frozen. There was quite a variety to choose from, a friendly staff, and everything looked fresh. Also noticed that the Meat House has starting selling some prepared foods. You could live in the Heights forever and never need to cook for yourswel again!

SCONES

Pemberton Market sells them, too.

Looking for baked stuffed lobster....

Captain Marden's makes them to go. Not the best in the world, but by no means the worst either, and with the money you saved, you could get her some really nice flowers or dessert........

Cheesecake in and around Cambridge

True, but that doesn't mean I don't still miss it - and Dave, of the eponymous cheesecake.

ISO fresh lasagna sheets in Boston

You sound like my Aunt Mary, an excellent Italian cook who was worried that when she moved to Florida, there wouldn't be a good Italian butcher. She took 10 pounds of frozen veal cutlets with her on the plane. I can only imagine what TSA would think of that today!

Dinner ideas in Watertown?

Every time I suggest Kitchen on Common to friends, they go dubiously and leave a believer. I could have their mac and cheese more times a week than would be good for me!

Dinner ideas in Watertown?

Check the recent thread on Strip-T' s and see if it's what you're looking for. The Deluxe Town Diner isn't fancy, but there's always something good to eat there. Gran Gusto would be quite a schlep from Brookline, especially at dinner time.

Quick bite near Symphony Hall

Before Huntington, we always go to Pho and I, which is practically next door to Symphony Hall. I'm especially partial to their gyoza. The service is always quick and friendly.

ISO plum jam; also, apricot jam prefs?

Wilson Farms has a big selection of their own brand of jams, but the plum is more jelly-like than preserve-like in consistency.

Birthday dinner in Reading or Andover? (or Burlington, etc.)

Just last night my brother and sister-in-law were commenting favorably on Samuel's. the new restaurant in the renovated Andover Inn. The Inn is also always very nicely decorated for the season, so it makes for a festive environment.

Best fries around???

And go quickly - they are closing soon. Maybe they'll bring them to their new spot behind Fresh Pond Mall.

Best Apple Pie

I have had that problem when the pie has been sitting around for a day or two, but not when I first get them home.

Best Apple Pie

If you're on the road, stop by Verrill Farm in Concord. Their pies are deliciously homemade, and mostly with their own fruit.
