San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
That's funny. We walked into mi Casa on the same night right after dinner at Restaurant H. I agree that it did look beautiful but I think we'll try Bistro Voila next time. We really like the town.
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
BTW, there's a new Mi Casa that just opened last week in San Jose right across the street from Restaurant H. It's huge and very fun but touristy looking. Would love to know what fellow Chowhounds think of it.
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
We took a chance and tried The Palapa at Esperanza again and perhaps because it was a slow night, everything was great. Also, the prices seemed lower than in the past. Perhaps they've made some positive changes. For once the service was very good as well. We also ate at La Fonda and everyone in our group really enjoyed it. The menu is very authentic and well priced.

Mocambo was a big hit with my group. The waiters were a lot of fun and everything was fresh. The preparations for some of the items on the big platters were so-so. The crab was especially, not well prepared. Perhaps steamed too slowly which caused it to be mealy or perhaps the crab wasn't alive when put into the steamer. The lobster was puny and not really worth ordering. The ceviche was excellent, fried oysters, whole snapper and the the shrimp wrapped in bacon were great. We would return. BTW, there were more locals eating there than touristas on a Wednesday night.
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
We really enjoyed El Chilar. Really nice decor, good, friendly service and great menu. It's really only about a 10 minute walk from the Art area of town.
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
So we ended up at restaurant H and it was very good. The space is lovely and the service was about the best we've had in Mexico. The menu didn't have very many options though - that would be my only complaint. And even then they were out of 3 entrees the night we were there so it was even more limited. We were there for the Art Walk and would probably look for something a little more casual next time since we had 2 teenagers with us. This is definitely not a restaurant for small children.
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
I forgot about the other thread I started "Only one night .... I guess I'm just looking for more input from other posters. I surprised this forum isn't more active...
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
You did reply but that question was added in on a Cabo thread and responses seemed to be more geared towards Cabo san Lucas. Thought I'd get more specific responses here.
San Jose del Cabo ... Good Eats?
Any recommendations? Interested in going on a Thursday night to take advantage of the Art Walk.
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
Thanks but I'm actually more interested in San Jose at this point. This trip we're only going to Cabo once to take family who've never been before.
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
Thanks so much! Sounds like Mocambo will be fine. I'll save Mazatlan for a future trip.
Now I'm wondering about Bistro Voila versus Restaurant H in San Jose. They both sound great and we're planning to go on a Thursday nt. during the Art Walk. Any preference?
Only one night out in San Jose del Cabo - Where to eat?
We're now actually thinking of having some meals delivered to our villa from Bistro Viola ... has anyone had any experience with this restaurant for catering?
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
Well, I would have no problem eating a Zarandeado but no one else in my group will touch a fish with bones (or skin or eyes for that matter)! I already booked Mocambo - is it so bad that I should change plans?
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
Really? It looks fairly touristy? Is that a given with Mocambo and El Pescador as well?
Only one night out in San Jose del Cabo - Where to eat?
Thanks for the suggestion but we've decided on Restaurant H. I'll post a review after we go.
Cooking Classes in your Villa in Cabo
Well, we already have the villa - now we just need the chef .....
Looking for Good Eats in Cabo
We're staying in Punta Ballena Pres. Week and I am also looking for some new places we haven't tried yet. Is Mocambo still good? ... it seems reviews have been mixed lately. Are there any other casual seafood restaurants that are similar and in that mid price range. We're tired of feeling ripped-off in Cabo so we don't feel inclined to book anything high-end there. We're also planning to eat at La Fonda and Restaurant H in San Jose.
Cooking Classes in your Villa in Cabo
Any recommendations for chefs who can conduct a cooking class in your villa in the Cabo area? We will be staying in Punta Ballena. What about private chefs in general in Cabo ... recommendations?
Only one night out in San Jose del Cabo - Where to eat?
So I've eaten at Mi Cocina, La Panga and El Chilar and would like to take family to the shopping area of San Jose for dinner and a stroll. I would consider trying La Panga and El Chilar again but had such a bad experience at Mi Cocino I'd never go back. we enjoyed El Chilar more than La Panga but it is a bit of a walk to the shopping area and I'll have an 84 year old with me. Any new recommendations? How is Morgan's Cellar and how does it compare to the others?
San Jose Del Cabo
I did consider Don Emiliano's but read too many mixed reviews to try it. El Chilar and Nick-San (Cabo) ended up being consistently positively reviewed so that's where we went and thoroughly enjoyed both places.
No Mi Casa: the real scoop on Cabo eating.
Now that I'm back from Cabo I wanted to add my thoughts about El Chilar and Nick-San. I have to agree with all the positive posts about these two restaurants. El Chilar is just lovely. The decor and ambiance are perfect, the service and friendliness of the staff are super and best of all the food is inventive, generously portioned and prepared. What a delight .. we'll be back. Nick-San in Cabo was also a pleasant surprise. My husband kept asking why we were going to have sushi in Mexico. Well, he realized why with the first bite of the Tuna Tostada and Black and White Ahi. The least interesting items were in fact the traditional sushi's. They were not actually all that well prepared - a little sloppy and the rice was not quite right but all the fish was incredibly fresh, even on a Sunday night. Service was great and friendly. And then the letdown was dinner at Esperanza at the Palapa restaurant... skimpy portions, bland and just plain medicocre. Service, however, has improved markedly.
No Mi Casa: the real scoop on Cabo eating.
It's very easy to get a taxi and go to either Cabo or San Jose. We'll actually be there this weekend, too and we're planning to eat at El Chilar and Nick-San. We're staying in and cooking one night and we'll brave one of the Esperanza restaurants just one night to see if things have changed at all.
No Mi Casa: the real scoop on Cabo eating.
Just have to chime in here. I totally agree with the assessment of The Office and Edith's. They are basically the same food (same owners) and equally bad, equally over-priced although I must say the Ceasar Salad prepared table-side at Edith's is very, very good except that you only get about three lettuce leaves!
I beg to differ regarding the comment about Esperanza. The food is really bad, portions are tiny and the pricing is outlandish - shocking even ... what nerve they have to charge the prices they do. The service is so over-wrought, they mean well but seem to be quite awkward. I've eaten at all their restaurants multiple times and am always disappointed. It's too bad because the setting is absolutely stunning - even the pool restaurant has a lovely ambiance.
Nick-San Cabo San Lucas
I'm hearing it's much less expensive than the very mediocre food at Esperanza where we always stay. I've decided to go ahead and book it just for a change ... there are just too many great reviews for this place to not go! thanks for the info.
San Jose Del Cabo
So we're going with El Chilar and I'll give a review upon my return. Thanks for your feedback!
San Jose Del Cabo
Sure, our standards are high just like everyone else but all we really want is great, authentic food and good service. Is El Chilar near the central part of town? Do they have any music? Is everything super spicy or are there alternatives?
Cabo - Mocambo for seafood?
Any comments? We're just looking for good food and don't care so much about ambiance - is this a good choice? Is it near the marina?
Bucieras (Nuevo Vallarta - Royal Decameron)
We had a disappointing meal at Marks but in nearby La Cruz there's a great place called Frascati's Bar and Grill. Believe it or not, it's Italian and they make their own pasta! Service is great and it's really a pleasant surprise!
Cabo San Lucas
Okay, are there any decent places to eat in Cabo? We always stay at Esperanza and the restaurants there are so bad we go elsewhere every night in search of a decent meal. We've been to Ediths and The Office and can't stand either place ... WAY too touristy and the food is totally mediocre.
San Jose del Cabo is a little better but we'd love to find a great place closeby in Cabo San Lucas. We're not really interested in going to other resorts to eat.
