Where To Buy Granulated Brown Sugar in Toronto
Do you mean demerara sugar? It's available in major supermarkets (often in the "health food" aisle) and in natural foods stores. It's not interchangeable with regular brown sugar for baking and cooking so be careful if planning to do so.
Natural, organic cane sugar (which Youngeman is referring to) is slightly golden in colour and can be used in place of conventional granulated sugar in any recipe.
Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!
And Sado Sushi, alas, is no more. Still open under the same name but with new owners.
Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!
Tomorrow's restaurant will be her last. A new restaurant critic to be announced on Tuesday. http://www.torontolife.com/daily/daily-dish/rumours-rumblings/2012/05/18/joanne-kates-leaves-the-globe/
blintzes for brunch/lunch in Toronto
Hartman's is a kosher butcher shop. Wouldn't expect that they'd make or sell cheese blintzes.
I buy Daiter's packaged blintzes regularly at What a Bagel in Forest Hill Village and fry them up at home. They're very good and are made with low-fat cottage cheese.
Champion House Restaurant
Here's a link to the recipe that millygirl posted: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/847945 Don't know if I'll ever make it, but I do vividly remember those shrimp. Thanks, millygirl!
The Works - coming to The Danforth
They won't cook your burger to your specifications. Well done is the only possibility. We ate at the location in Guelph a couple of months ago. The burgers took ages to come and were so dry and unappealing we vowed never to return.
Mt. Everest Restaurant, Eglinton and Laird
So I ended up getting a takeout from the location on Bloor last night. Not impressed; most dishes lacked depth and a couple were excessively salty (and I'm not salt-phobic). I will give the new place a try when it opens, though.
Mt. Everest Restaurant, Eglinton and Laird
:( Just called to order take out and the voicemail message advises that they'll be opening soon. Oh well. Now I've got a huge craving for Nepalese food. Think I'll make the trek to Bloor St...
Here's the contact info for future reference.

Mt. Everest Restaurant, Eglinton and Laird
Do you stick with the Nepalese dishes, magic, or do you mix and match with their Indian options? Which of their dishes really stand out? Are the momos good?
Mt. Everest Restaurant, Eglinton and Laird
I drive by the strip of Eglinton just west of Laird quite often and never noticed this restaurant before. Has anyone been? There's another restaurant by the same name on Bloor; is this an offshoot?
Update: Just called the Bloor St. location and it is the same owners and menu. The menu looks great - Himalayan/Nepalese cuisine: http://www.mteverestrestaurant.ca/index.php I'll post back after I've given it a try.
St Jacobs Farmers Market?!
"The vendors outside were making big displays of bringing out "fresh" baskets of produce to refill their shelves. Beans with brown spots, dried out asparagus, all of which easily had to be a week old."
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but beans and asparagus are not yet in season in Ontario, so it's not surprising that they weren't fresh... This vendor is obviously a reseller -- buying produce at the food terminal for resale at the "farmers" market. Was he suggesting the produce was local or did you just assume so? Some legitimate farmers who sell at market do supplement their winter incomes with imported goods but they are totally out in the open about it.
ISO Kosher Meat Restaurant
There's also Dr. Laffa. Very casual, but the food is solid. http://drlaffa.com/
Jicima
I'm not at all familiar with Windsor, but have you tried any Latin grocery stores? A quick Google search comes up with this one: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mexico-Lindo-Latin-American-Food-Market/149405565083028 By the way, it's "jicama."

Panier Rouge - Yonge and St. Clair
Why should it be "pannier"? A panier, as spelled, is a basket in French. Having the word "rouge" in the restaurant name would negate using the "English" word pannier.
ISO: farro
I buy a brand of farro called Pantanella. The box is definitely confusing -- the product is called, in big lettering, "Farro in chicchi," but below it's marked "100% Spelt-Epeautre-Dinkel-El farro" (English, French, German and Spanish "translations").
I'm able to understand the Italian instructions for Zuppa di farro on the back of the box and it calls for cooking the farro in the soup for about 30 minutes, which is about the amount of time I cook farro when making a pilaf.
Both spelt and wheat berries take at least an hour to cook, which suggests to me that this brand of imported "farro" is, indeed, the real thing.
ISO: farro
Hate to disagree with you, embee, but true farro is emmer wheat, not spelt; it's a more ancient grain. I believe the "farro" imported from Italy is, indeed, the real stuff and not spelt. It also does not need to be cooked as long as wheat berries to soften up.
Best way to buy meat directly from farmers?
Try the Ontario Farm Fresh website. Just type in your postal code, the distance you're willing to travel, and the product(s) you're looking for, and voila! I've bought lamb and beef from some of the farmers on this list and have been extremely happy with the quality. Prices will vary from farm to farm. http://ontariofarmfresh.com/locator/
ISO: farro
I've bought it at Lady York and Fiesta Farms. Any Italian grocer/supermarket should carry it. Grande Cheese should have it, as well.
Red Fife and/or Einkorn Wheat berries
Your best bet would be to contact one of the Red Fife growers in Ontario. Sean McGivern of Saugeen Specialty Grains http://www.foodlinkgreybruce.com/index.php?page=operation_info&operation_id=195 and Patricia Hastings of CIPM http://lanarklocalflavour.ca/content/patricia-hastings would be a couple of farmers to start with.
Native Pawpaws
From what I understand, they give off an awful smell, as well, so best to place the trees as far away from the house as possible.
Dining out during passover (aka. without carbs)
We tried the Passover menu at Pickle Barrel a few years ago and it was completely inedible. I was so disgusted that I haven't been back there since.
Dining out during passover (aka. without carbs)
I was on Mideastro Yorkville's website the other day and noticed they have a Passover menu: http://www.mideastroyorkville.com/index.php
Native Pawpaws
Grimo Nut Nursery in Niagara sells pawpaw saplings. Their website indicates they might be available after July 1. http://www.grimonut.com/catalog.php?catID=70
Any venue suggestions for gentleman's dinner?
Simple Bistro on Mount Pleasant has an upstairs dining room that we've used semi-privately for for a party of 8 or 9. Their food is excellent and quite reasonably priced.
Guelph Nathan's
I've bought Nathan's hot dogs at Fraberts in Fergus; haven't been there in a couple of months, though, so don't know if they still carry them. They are open 7 days a week. http://www.frabertsfreshfood.com/
ISO fresh nutmeg in Central TO
I assume by "fresh nutmeg" you mean whole nutmeg? Every supermarket carries it. It's not a gourmet item. Check the spice aisle.
Looking for a KOSHER brisket
They are way too lean for smoking; the fat cap is totally removed. They come into the store already trimmed and packed by the kosher meat supplier.
Looking for a KOSHER brisket
Believe it or not, Hartman's sells kosher Wagyu beef. Insanely expensive.
