Taylor Shellfish (Cap Hill)
Thanks for the response, Shelley. I know the search function and my questions are still not answered.
Can we order crab, chowder and oysters there? Or are oysters the only regular offering...the rest on event nights? There is not menu listed. Does it get crowded?
Taylor Shellfish (Cap Hill)
I've seen this brought up a few times as an option for oysters and wanted to get more information.
I've seen the website and understand it to be a shellfish vendor (raw goods) more than anything else. What is the "dine-in" option. Looks like there's a small counter? We can order crab, chowder and oysters to enjoy there? No menu is listed on the website. Is there seating at the counter? Does it get crowded?
Thinking of doing an off-beat dinner there on Friday (we're not trying to hit their happy hour), and wanted to know what to expect.
Good Eats in Lake Chelan?
my search turned up posts 2 years old. Hoping that new (better) options have come up in the Lake Chelan dining scene since then. Particularly some options more on the bistro/fining dining end than the pizza parlor level of formality.
Thanks!
Just Moved to Redmond from Boston -- Food Shopping Help Please!
I really enjoy the Issaquah Farmer's Market (starts this weekend). It blows Bellevie out of the water.
My favorite grocery is Your Local Market across Bellevue Way from Bel Square. It's local and features locally grown produce and meats. It is very community oriented, which I like. It's similar to Whole Foods for 75% of items, with 25% the more familiar brands. For me this = convenience. I get my grass fed beef there as well as veggies grown in Mt. Vernon or closer. Pricing also seems to be more in line with QFC than WF.
Fountain Cafe, Pt. Townsend
Tried the Fountain Cafe on our short trip to Port Townsend this weekend.
I am going to have to argue with some of what has been said above. It's not just standard fare done well and in a good environment. I ordered their special pasta, an adobo/coconut milk with flank steak and peppers over linguine. Oh my goodness, I swear I woke up thinking about it and have already tried to google a recipe that will get me close. It was divine. My husband ordered steak which was well prepared, but fairly standard.
We started with the pan fried oysters, which were so delicately battered and served with a slightly sweet, slightly horseradished cocktail sauce. One of the best meals anywhere, I have enjoyed in a long time.
I wonder if they'd be willing share that recipe? I may have to ask as we don't get to Pt. Townsend often.
Dim sum in Seattle
The wontons in spicy sauce...i could eat just about anything in that spicy sauce. Such a delicious blend of smoky and sweet.
Dim sum in Seattle
Christy, we frequented Koi's for a while when it first opened. The decline in both food and service was steady. We've since returned to Noble Court because it got that bad. Don't know what the name change means, maybe i'll send my husband to try again. :)
waterfront rehearsal dinner ideas?
Keep in mind that tax and mandatory gratuity for a large group is 30%. So your $30 is actually $20 per person. I'd probably skip the yacht clubs and such because their rental fee will be half if not all of your budget. The parks will be far more affordable. How about Aqua Vista? It would be casual, but not more so than a park. There are also boathouse type structures at Golden Gardens and Alki, but again, I think they are pretty pricey.
Help! Need a memorable anniversary dinner!
How about Teatro Zinzani? It's downtown near the Space Needle. The food is directed by Tom Douglas. And the time I went (although some years ago) the show was very entertaining. Not the staff, but the performers. They rotate out the show every however months.
Capitol Hill Rec, please
Have an old friend visiting from out of town. They are just passing through and wanted to show them a lively part of Seattle on their one evening. I was thinking the Capitol Hill Pike/Pine area. Here'st he thing, I'm an Eastsider and have only been in Caffe Vita up there in the past 5 years.
We're looking for a place that
-Takes reservations (party of 8 on a Saturday night)
-Is lively, but not so loud you can't have a conversation
-Good food (doesn't need to a gourmet experience, but something solid)
-Has drinks (variety of local/microbrew beers might be good)
I was thinking perhaps Barrio or Elysian. I've been to different locations of both of these restaurants, but not the Capitol Hill ones. Thoughts or other recommendations?
Also, what pubs nearby are good for just drinks?
Friend is coming from Colorado, if that matters.
Where to buy seafood?
I haven't been, but I don't think that place is new. I remember it was going in when there was a Sprint store next door. I guess it says something if it's still around.
Juice Bars/Health Food Stores?
Thanks for the excellent recommendation, Exit. We did visit 24 carrots and it was exactly what I was looking for. The house made granola and quinoa (done like oatmeal) were awesome. Ended up chatting with the owner and it sounds like locally sourced foods and health are her passions.
Prime Rib in Phx/Scottsdale/Tempe?
Thanks for the responses...but unfortunately we're back from our trip already. I'm sure we'll be back (sun seeking) again and I'll definitely look up this link.
Dim Sum on eastside
Really? We were talking about how every time we go, it just slips and slips. Quality of food as well as service. What previously could be a matter or working out some kinks has become bad habits.
From serving food that clearly has been on the cart too long, to heating it up in the microwave (fried tofu does not microwave well) and re-serving to consistently running out of the staple dishes the place has become just another example of a restaurant that started out with promise but failed to evolve or develop.
Juice Bars/Health Food Stores?
Visiting with my family later this week. At home, I make vegetable juice for my son. He loves it and it's way more nutritious than bottled orange or apple juice. Clearly I'm not packing my juicer on vacation but I'm wondering if there are juice bars that might offer tasty drinks. While Jamba Juice will work in a pinch, I'd prefer an outfit that doesn't specialize in the sugar-filled smoothies and has offerings beyond "carrot juice".
SImilarly, coffee stands that might carry almond or rice milk. I know my local Whole Foods has 3 all types of milk, including the non-dairy.
Staying near Arizona Mills/Tempe.
Thanks!
Mill Ave Options?
Any recommendations for dining on or near Mill Ave? Our hotel is closer to Mill Ave. than to Old Town Scottsdale, so imagine we'll have an evening or two in the area. Casual dining preferred as we are traveling with a young child. Ethnic is fine too, he's not strictly a mac-n-cheese child. Wouldn't mind take away suggestions either.
Prime Rib in Phx/Scottsdale/Tempe?
I like prime rib. I don't expect we'll find a House of Prime Rib (SF) or Lawry's (Chicago), and in fact we don't have to go to a restaurant that only does prime rib. But do any of the steak houses (even the kitschy/saloon style ones) do prime rib particularly well?
lookong for best value
Honestly, I haven't been there in a while. My husband loves the greasy spoon and this was one of his favorites. When I think "dive" I think of it because it's as if it's trapped in time, including the food. It's not creative, but great for a hang over and predictable.
Dinner options near Arizona Grand Resort near South Mountain Park
Themis, would the farm to table restaurants you list above be appropriate to bring a well-behaved our properly distracted 4 year old to? My litmus test is whether someone would ber proposing there. I prefer a livlier atmosphere to a quiet/romantic one for dining out with my son, regardless of how well behaved I think he'll be.
lookong for best value
The Shanty. Key Arena-ish, rather than business downtown area.
Sedona with 4 yr old suggestions
We'll be in Scottsdale for Vday. And will likely specifically choose that evening to pick up BBQ to eat in or visit Rawhide (something decidedly not romantic). Sedona is the 8th snd 9th. Maybe we'll cruise by Elote to see how the wait is and decide on somewhere near by if the wait is unreasonable.
Any suggestions for a nearby (walking) fallback? Thanks!
Sedona with 4 yr old suggestions
Thanks for the recommendations! The runway tip is excellent, the little guy will love it.
Elote and our potential for missing out almost has me staying another day in Sedona. Maybe we'll cruise by when we return from the Grand Canyon and see how the wait is. But looks like we have alternatives, if not.
Would you recommend making reservations on a February week night? Don't know how normal restaurant traffic is. Don't want to end up eating average food because of not planning, but at the same time would really like to have the flexibility of not having a reservation to make.
Last Minute Weekend Visit
I'll only comment of Friday night, and leave the rest to others. But I'd gp with Facing East (Taiwanese). It's not as mainstream as the other regional Chinese, and you might not even find it in Boston. Search for it on CH for more information/menu recommendations.
For seafood try the squid appetizer and basil clams. The fried yearling oysters are good too, but they are fried.
Sedona with 4 yr old suggestions
Headed to Sedona for a couple of nights, soon. Will be a well-behaved (or sufficiently distracted--thank you ipad) 4 yr old and his foodie parents. Looking for excellent food in a casual/lively environment. A place that takes reservations would be great.
Elote sounds like a board favorite, but for the 'arrive right at 5:30' comments. We'll be arriving from PHX one evening and day triping to GCNP the other, so I'm thinking that it won't work out as perfectly as I'd like. We'll be doing the cowboy experience dinner in PHX, so no need for a kitschy steakhouse (unless it's a hellava steak). Breakfast and lunch options also welcome. No specific cuisine in mind, although I do enjoy regional cuisine...when in Rome. Coming from Seattle so probably not seafood or Asian specifically. We'll be staying at El Portal.
Would also love a recommendation on where we could pick up boxed lunches or picnic supplies for our Grand Canyon outing. Sounds as if selection is scarce once in/near the park. On the way or near Williams, AZ would work also.
Thanks!
Sufficiently Noisy Sushi (without compromising quality of food)?
Thanks for your help. We ended up at Nishino, but didn't arrive until 8 and closed the place down at 11:30. Were the last table for probably the last hour...but staff was very gracious and didn't make us feel like they were packing it in and we were keeping them from the end of their work day. And the later seating didn't make us feel like we were too obnoxious.
We did the regular omakase, with a few requests that would have been a part of the "exceptional omakase". It was a fantastic meal. My personal favorites were the foie gras/mushroom reduction sushi and the ginger crab cake.
I'm mentally planning a return visit soon. It was that good.
Sufficiently Noisy Sushi (without compromising quality of food)?
Headed to sushi with friends from out of town. I'm not usually a west-sider, but have enjoyed some outstanding meals at Nishino, Mashiko and Kisaku. While we're not rowdy (a la college aged saki-bombs) but at the same time I can see us having some sake and doing some serious laughing. At the same time, we really appreciate a good meal.
I think of my last visits to Kisaku and Nishino, and I think we would be disruptive. Wanting to stay downtown and not deal with getting to West Seattle. Any suggestions on a decent omakase in a lively atmosphere? Japonessa? Umi Sushi House? I haven't been to either, so I'm looking for your direction.
Thanks in advance!
Need recommendation for restaurant with good scallop dish
Can't remember having had them in Seattle recently, but perhaps someone else can chime in with a reliable location. Some of the Chinese seafood restaurants will do a scallop on the half shell preparation. it's steamed with a sweet soy, ginger and green onions. Divine for a scallop lover. Maybe Sea Garden? Any other Seattle CHers know?
Aura in Whistler Creekside?
Reporting back. We had Xmas Eve dinner at Aura. It was terrific!
They had a very limited 4 or 6 course menu to choose from, but every course was very well executed. A focus on local ingredients to create delicately prepared courses.
The highlight was a salmon dish. Dessert was the weak point.
Really, it was a very enjoyable meal with excellent service in a very nice setting.
Whistler Sushi?
We went to Kaze. It was not awesome. Service was clueless. Appetizers were barely passable and the hot pot was laughable. A seafood hot pot with 4 (good quality) shrimp and 1 oyster between the all of us. Especially since they charge $30/person for the hot pot.
We won't return. Next year, we'll try Nagomi or go back to Sushi Village.
