Where to Find Dried, Non-Candied, Ginger Root in Metro D.C.

I ended up tracking dried ginger slices down at Penzey's in Rockville (thanks everyone and I definitely called first to confirm they had it!). The suggestion of the Chinese pharmacy is interesting, though, and I willl definitely check that place out.

Wayne's suggestion of using unintentionally dried ginger roots is funny. I have to admit that I considered subbing some old ginger roots that I have from the last time I made kimchi, but figured that if I'm laying down over $100 on the meat going into this broth, then I'm going to do everything that I can not to screw it up.

Where to Find Dried, Non-Candied, Ginger Root in Metro D.C.

Thanks for the replies. I checked out a Latin supermarket in Columbia Heights, but they only have fresh ginger. My understanding is that fresh and dried ginger do taste different; I'd imagine that the dried ginger is much more potent in flavor as well. I will definitely check out Penzey's tomorrow!

Where to Find Dried, Non-Candied, Ginger Root in Metro D.C.

I am trying my hand at making pho broth, bought the 24 quart pot, and can't find dried ginger. All I can find is the candied dried ginger or ground ginger powder. I'd like to get this broth going today, so any leads in the metro D.C. area would be great. Though, I can probably get out further into the 'burbs tomorrow and delay the simmering a day if it doesn't exist in the metro area. Thanks!

Great Wall Szechuan House, 1527 14th Street

The ma la boiled fish with tofu is very good, possibly even better than their ma po. Also, for veggies, their ma la bean sprouts were a surprise, in a positive way. Nice black vinegar kick.

Christmas Day Chinese Food, Delivery/Take Out/ Eat in?

We ordered from Great Wall from Logan Circle on Christmas (from the ma la menu, of course), and it was as great as usual. Best Chinese in metro DC and since the renovation, the interior looks great, too.

Visiting from NYC

Paul Bakery on Pennsylvania and 8th is great. We visited this bakery in Paris and were thrilled to see one open in DC. Great almond croissant, palmiers, pain au chocolat.

Where to buy good matzo ball soup in Washington DC?

Loeb's Deli has tasty matzo ball soup.

Lobster Rolls

I didn't find Tackle Box's lobster roll to be particularly memorable. I definitely prefer the Red Hook Lobster Truck's lobster roll, especially the hot one with butter. If you like the the mayo version, then Luke's Lobster's lobster roll is the best I've tried so far in DC. For a frame of reference, I don't necessarily need crunch in my lobster rolls, but I insist on flavor and nice big chunks of lobster.

Where can I buy Korean rice wine (for cooking) in Virginia?

Yes, this is definitely something you can get at HMart. I usually get Kikkoman's Aji Mirin.

ISO tres leche cake

KoGiBow Bakery in Adams Morgan has tres leches that is tasty and not overly sweet

Cuba Libre opens in Penn Quarter

We had a similar average food experience at Cuba Libre. The mojitos were tasty (classic and pyrat), but we wouldn't return for a meal.

We ordered the plato gaucho (mixed grill) medium rare. One cut of meat came out completely rare and another cut (the skirt, which cooks v. quickly) came out well done. The chicken and shrimp were completely overcooked.

The tuna ceviche was exactly as described by OP, a plate of diced tuna. There was nothing ceviche-like or flavorful-like about this dish at all. I like sashimi and sushi, but if I want that, then I'll go to a Japanese sushi restaurant.

The cuban bread and mango butter was pretty good and the batata con camarones had a nice flavor. But, in the context of a meal, this wasn't enough to turn the tide.

Too bad. We would have loved a tasty meal option in this area. The meal came out to over $100 for two before tip, which would have been fine had we enjoyed the food.

Bibimbap with brown rice in new york?

At Woorijip, you can pick up bibimbap. Since the rice comes packaged separately, you can just pick up brown rather than white.

Looking for Bloody Good Roast Beef Sandwich

I've been meaning to try This Little Piggy Had Roast Beef. Sounds like people are loving it. Maybe that'll satisfy the craving?

Where to have Fritto Misto and Fried Roman Style Artichokes

Gemma has a tasty fritto misto. Nice crisp, though the shrimp was a bit overcooked.

Fidi Pizza Delivery

Third Pizza Italia. Their pepperoni and onion with vodka sauce pizza is pretty darn good.

Banjara-What to order?

The palak ghost is the best chicken saag rendition I've ever had anywhere. Really tasty. Also, their dumpakht. I was first taken to this place by Indian friends who pronounced it the best Indian in the city; these dishes are what they always order there.

New lunch options (present and future) in FiDi

Thanks for the suggestions. Yummy tacos in this area would be a great find! We'll definitely try that out next week. We usually head to Alfanoose for our Middle Eastern, but if you think that Bread & Olive is better, then we'll give that a try, too.

New lunch options (present and future) in FiDi

Hunting down tasty food in FiDi can feel limiting, so it's always interesting when new options open up. We walked by Swich, a new pressed sandwich place on Maiden, the other day and gave it a try. Overall: interesting sandwich combinations and not bad, taste-wise. We had the Trojan Horse (ground lamb sandwich on focaccia) and Thanksgiving Every Day (roasted turkey, of course, on cranberry pecan bread). It was a bit hit-or-miss with the seasoning (the lamb sandwich was a tad undersalted and the gravy in the Thanksgiving was pretty salty), but definitely better than a lot of other sandwiches we've had in the area and big flavors with potential. The housemade chips, potato or sweet potato, are a nice touch. Note: the big sandwich flavors can overwhelm the somewhat delicate-tasting chips; they're better enjoyed separately.

Also: Klatch has closed, a former FiDi institution, and signs now show that Baoguette will be moving in (also on Maiden). Looking forward to their banh mi and vietnamese coffee!

Fresh Lobster meat at $80 pound!

For a bit cheaper: I just bought fresh lobster meat from The Lobster Place, $60 a pound.

Arirang - New "must try" restaurant in ktown (kal gook soo)

Thanks for the heads up. We're always looking for tasty Korean restaurants and love the specialized restaurants too. They always seem to do it a little better than the generalized ones. We had the seafood pajun here and it was a pretty good version. Very crispy; it does not suffer from the unfortunate doughy quality of a lot of other pajuns out there. They have you mix your own dipping sauce, which is kind of nice, I guess. We had the seafood kimchi noodle soup. The noodles were nice and chewy, but the seafood addition wasn't really worth it. I'd like to try the chicken version next time so that I can try the chili condiments.

Reliable Knife Sharpener

Korin @ Warren and W. Broadway. Just make sure the knifemaster's in town.

Good Place for Duk Gook

Hmm, sorry it was so bad for you. The last time I had it there, it had a rich beef broth flavor and the mandu and duk were tasty.

Authentic Sichuan doubanjiang (chili bean paste) in NYC?

I've only found this in Flushing's Chinatown, despite looking in Manhattan's. I've tried a couple of different brands, including the Korean version (terrible), but now only buy this one, made with broad beans. The label is in Chinese, so I can't tell you the brand, but the label says Broad Bean Paste With Chili and has four Chinese characters above, each in a different color, in order of red, green, orange, brown.

Good Place for Duk Gook

I don't like many of the dishes there, but the mandoo duk gook at kum gang san is one of the good ones.

BCD Tofu House - solid addition to ktown

I just went yesterday night and it was packed. The hostess looked overwhelmed and the servers were running around like crazy. That said, the soon tofu here is definitely, no contest, better than Book Chang in Flushing, Seoul Garden and Cho Dong Gol (could never bring myself to like that place). We got the pork soon tofu (the kimchi one was separate) and they actually made it spicy, per request, and it was the first soon tofu broth in NY that didn't taste completely watered down or one-dimensional. They were very generous with the banchan, too, for a soon tofu place: a whole fried fish, two kinds of kimchi, pickles and bean sprouts.
