Thanks for all the ideas! We're going to try the Optimist, with Summer Stock as a backup. Will report back!

Lunch places near Yarmouth on the Cape?
I'm visiting the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouthport on a Saturday, and am looking for a fun lunch place in that area (mid-Cape). Any ideas? It needs to be somewhere with tasty *non-seafood* options, since my travel companion is allergic. Looking to stay in $20-$40 per person price range. Thanks!
Culinary tour of East Boston
I'd add Mi Pueblito on Border Street to the list. It's Mexican-Salvadoran, and has great pupusas and mojarra frita. Nice folks work there too.
Beyond the Basics at Penang?
Thanks to yuanzhoulv and the other posters. I wound up getting the mee siam--really tasty rice noodles with shrimp and tofu. The noodles were kind of pungent, which scared me at first, but it turned out to just be fish sauce. They were amazing with lime juice squeezed on top.
My DCs and I also shared the steamed cuttlefish app. It was very much like squid--the chewy kind, not the crispy calamari variety. The cuttlefish was served in a thick, tasty peanut sauce on top of Chinese watercress.
We finished up with the "ABC" dessert--a truly bizarre and awesome concoction of finely chipped ice, coconut milk, tapioca, black beans (!) and corn (!). It seems to be modeled after Taiwanese and Chinese desserts, which sometimes combine savory and sweet in that way.
We ate tons of food, had lots of leftovers, and wound paying $15 per person including tax and a generous tip. That place is such a good deal!
Beyond the Basics at Penang?
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm heading there tonight and will try at least one or two of these ideas!
Beyond the Basics at Penang?
I've been going to Penang for years and usually get the same standby dishes--Buddhist yam pot; mango chicken (or shrimp); nasi lemak; roti canai. I've also seen recs on this board for the mee siam and the eggplant with basil, as well as the bone-in chicken curry.
But their menu is so enormous that I'm sure I'm missing some great dishes. Any recommendations for other excellent things to eat at Penang? Thanks!
Pampas is Delicious, Props to Itaunas, Wicked Bargain
I just ate at Pampas last night so can clarify some details.
There are two options for pricing--you can either pay by the pound ($4.99/lb), or do the all-you-can-eat thing ($10.95). My DC and I both filled our plates and wound up paying about $6-$7 each for a large amount of delicious food.
For those asking about alcohol, bear in mind that they do have awesome fruit juices here, so if you're someone who enjoys fresh guava or passionfruit juice that's a good option if the BYOB doesn't work out.
They also have tasty-looking Brazilian desserts for around $2-$3 each.
The Beehive - not impressed and check your bill!
I have only sat at the bar there and had Belgian beer and their very good frites (served w/sage). Never any issues with attitude or inaccuracy; perhaps the bar vibe is different from the restaurant service itself. Will make sure to check my frites-and-beer bill next time though!
Favorite Bar/Pub on a Snowy Night?
I'd third James' Gate. They have a fireplace, which makes it ultra-cozy.
Hotel Lounge for Pre-Xmas Drinks and Apps
The Liberty Hotel, right by the Charles/MGH T stop, is one of the most beautiful interior spaces in Boston. It used to be a jail, and has been renovated into a swanky hotel. They have a beautiful lobby area (straight up the escalators when you come into the building) with an incredibly high ceiling. You can sit on comfy chairs there and the servers will bring you cocktails and apps. It is on the pricey side, unsurprisingly--a martini is about $11, and a plate of edamame is about $8. But it's a nice place for a treat, and certainly worth walking through at least once to check out the cool architecture.
One side note--if you like champagne, they are one of the few places that will sell fancy champagne by the glass, rather than by the bottle. We're talking bottles that go for hundreds of dollars here--you can splurge on a glass for $30 rather than a bottle for $800. Of course the wisdom of this depends on how many people are in your party and how you feel about champagne!
Where to find tropical mixed drinks in Boston/Cambridge?
This isn't strictly "tropical," but the Diva Lounge in Davis Square has surprisingly good mixed drinks with muddled (or smooshed) berries in them. I like the Shiva (it has cayenne pepper in it!) and the Zen (mashed-up blackberries). A good option for cocktails that will make you feel warm as the weather cools off!
