Where have you had the best Osso Buco in SD?

Aptly titled. I want one of these, too! Talking warm and fuzzy, ultimate satisfaction...to die for! Thank you.

OMG...thanks for this rec. Very comfortable place with good service and we were not rushed. I went there planning to savor the osso buco but ultimately decided on the Veal Chop because not many places still serve them. It was simply divine. I will return for Osso Buco, unless something else grabs me by the neck.

Don't bet on it! I've had a few unexpected run ins there. But not so many now that La Fonda is not the same. Everybody stopped there.

This place is so old school and they are trained right. Brings back memories of the old days in Baja, after the races and the jai alai. I love Romesco's. And they know how to mix drinks. Love that Proseco and Campari.

February Dish of the Month - CHOCOLATE

I want some of this. I truly dislike the overly dense and sweet desserts that hurt my teeth. Thanks for the post.

February Dish of the Month - CHOCOLATE

Not a HUGE chocolate fan, not yet anyway. Stopped in Fresh and Easy to browse and found a jar of King's Cupboard Three Chilies Chocolate Sauce. It's hard like hot fudge and you have to heat it unless you just eat it with a spoon from the jar!
Also, stayed in Carlsbad last weekend with friends from the cold east coast. We stopped for coffee and truffles at the Carlsbad Chocolate Bar on State street. Fabulous selection of candies and they also sell wine.
But my favorites are still See's marzipan and chocolate covered ginger.
Love the cup of hot cocoa, more like liquid silk from Eclipse on Fern Street in So. Park.

The One Month Mark of our 7 Week Stay-Food Report and Where Else to Go Next?

Hope I'm not to late and you still have time to explore and eat.
Do go to Romesco's. It's like old Mexico, charming, with good food and service. They used to have a guitar trio on Thursday nights. Call and check.
El Indio has good chips, period. I'd pass on Luche Libre in favor of Mama Testa's excellent taco selection.
Buona Forchetta is a bargain for the money and a unique little place. Authentico.
I like Blue Water Grill for a laid back fish dinner, as good as any in the city.
Anything at Chloes is a winner.
For something different, cruise up Fern Street to Eclipse Chocolate. Everything has some kind of chocolate. The sandwiches have mole...yum! and a cup of Choc has more caffeine than a double espresso.
Sakura is really good, less expensive at lunch.
Out by the Bonita Golf Course...up the street from Romesco's is TJ's Oyster Taco House. Worth a visit for any kind of fish taco or cebiche but the oysters have it.
Good eating...

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay - February 2014! [OLD]

Don't kill me...but they have an instant coffee that tastes every bit as good as brewed. I think it comes from Germany. I mostly (very much) dislike instant coffee but used this one in a pinch and was pleasantly surprised. I've heard that not every store carries the same merchandise.
They also have a sampling of 8 different chocolate bars from different parts of the world that are worth trying. And who can argue with their selection of wines, especially Italian wines + Proseco.
I also like the medley of shrimp, calamari and scallops and then simmer it with chioppino sauce.
Just trolling around the store is fun. I always fing something new to try. Stock up while you can still get out of the driveway! Stay warm.

Really. Is it the same as Bo Beau Ocean Beach?
I know lots of places that serve Pork or Lamb and call it Osso Buco but it ain't the same. ;-)
The shank at Buona Forchetta is veal. The same meal in Little Italy would be $60.
I could probably find one in TJ!

What is the best damn thing you've eaten in SD?

Lately and unintentionally.....
Fabulous salad/sandwich combos at Rubicon Deli. Ultra fresh, dress it yourself greens and interesting extras. Good porc sammie and excellent pastrami. Designer breads, I don't know who makes them but no complaints. Go after lunch hour for ez parking and no wait outside tables on lively India Street. Stroll down to the corner for gelato and espresso if you have any space left.

Where have you had the best Osso Buco in SD?

Since La Trattoria closed in Santee and before that on Mision Gorge, I've not tasted any as good as Liliana's. By accident I was in the neighborhood and stopped in Buona Forchetta early, had a glass of Sangiovese, a delicious chuleta, risotto a bit rich and heavy, and a panna cotta, all for a measly $37. YUM! I'm going to try it again soon, along with your other suggestions???? Thanks.

If you like to cook Mexican food

you should know about :

elruisenor.com a D.F. company with locations in Los Angeles and NOW, tada...you don't have to go to TJ to get mole or chiles or spices or dulces or who knows what else. They have a huge inventory or everything you need to make great Mexican food and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Speak with Ernesto or Jesus.

They are located in Chula Vista (still SD, right?) on the NW corner of Main and Industrial Sts. Phone: 619/424-5011.

Need good eats for 10 at 10pm July 3rd.

Four people are flying into SD from 4 different places between 7:30 and 8:45. Hopefully we will all be cool, calm and collected, albeit hungry, by 9:15. I'd like recs for good late night eats nearby but not GasLamp...we'll have 3 cars. I just want good, plenty and easy.

Eggplant-Pepper Tomato Sauce

Besides being healthy and delicious, this is so easy to prepare. I added a bulb of fennel to the mixed veggies and tossed in some kalamata olives just before serving. Very substantial dish served over a short (ziti, fusili, etc.) pasta. Easy dish to tweak to everyone's favorite tastes.

Man, do I ever agree with you about Better Half! I really miss that place, best food I've had in San Diego. I remember being served my dessert of choice, after a fantastic meal...A Fabulous Cuban Corona.

Sadly never got to try the foie gras pot pie at Delicias but did have some lovely seared fg at Mille Fleurs.

Anthology Closes

This is very sad because the venue was great. The food, the 2nd time around was good. San Diego needed this but I don't believe SD is a real jazz town although they've become more sophisticated with the mixed influx the past decade. I think the place could survive as an entertainment venue without food. The real reason for closure may be the financials differences especially if a divorce is involved. Diva, do you really think Latin music would go any better than Jazz? Not unless they're backed by Qualcomm!

Yes, we have to go to Alhambra or Montebello to get the good stuff. No more Hunan, that's really sad. Where is the Spicy House?

El Charco en Chula Vista

Yeah, babe! I go twice a week, it keeps getting better. My favorite is the al pastor sope. That queso is pretty lethal too. This is good, well prepared food in a good environment, as you say. Paco is my man. I do agree he needs to feature his black sauce here. They make a good cup of coffee and the flan is superb. I do love the jamaica and also, the more filling, horchata. They're not the watery pre-mixed stuff. He'll probably have liquor license here soon. They're busy on weekends and the week night traffic is picking up. I expect Paco to add other popular items later on. He knows what we like. I'll join you whenever you get down this way.
