Sweetbreads
Since so many good restaurants, a couple of my favorites among them, have passed away, where do I find the best sweetbreads? I like them at Hexagone but want more options.
DC chowhounders looking for current recs CARLSBAD
If you want interesting Mex food while still in the city how can you pass up Cesar's Mama Testa? Something for everybody and THE best selection of salsas. And it is the real thing, nothing like it up north. Mama Testa's not on the list anymore Gayla?
SD: Favorite place to get rolled tacos?
Re: Paco's place and the give away. He always gives a little extra. He does gangbuster biz in the am and weekends, weekdays eves could be better. He also has discount tix in the local paper. Worth it if you go more than twice a week.I like to go in the afternoon between lunch and dinner. Standard fare: PANCITA (sells out early),Huitlacoche quesadilla (fresh or not) ; dark salsa to die for and the best African jamaica for your disgestion. The flan can't be overlooked either. I take out cups of the salsa negra...great with fresh chicharonnes from Northgate. Had them for Super Bowl Sunday.
Where can I buy smoked salmon?
This thread makes me hungry for graved lox. Do any local restaurants serve it? I can make my own but it's nice to have it served.

Not even on someone else's dime, honey. Although the patio did look like THE place to lay back and get a feel good on. I'd have to stick to my 'NEAT' preferences as those well drinks were, as mentioned, truly mysterious. I'd have to order "ICED COFFEE" and would hope they served Hagen-Daz. Pass on the tourist traps.
Just passing thru Amarillo this week
I'll only be here one evening but I do like a good evening meal after driving all day. It doesn't have to be fancy, just good.
And are there any bakeries for moring pastry and coffee?
I appreciate all suggestions.
Magnolia's is gone again
We stopped by Magnolia's last week and a sign on their door said, "Magnolia's will serve food for the last time on June 26".
We were disappointed.
Just passing through
L.A. and holed up on the Arroya in South Pas. We truly lucked out when we stopped for afternoon refreshment in Altadena at Bulgarini's Gelato. Still a work in progress but the cases of fresh fruit outside the store magnetized me. On hand were about 10 flavors and we were treated to samples of any/all of them. My granddaughter had the chocolate hazelnut and swooned all the while. I had difficulty choosing between the goat cheese with choco nibs and the truly rapturous zabaglione (zab won). OMG! We had gone the day before but the store was closed. I think they're only open Wednesday thru Saturday. Located behind the Rite-Aid at Lake and Altadena. Nothing I've ever tasted here or in Italy even comes close to this.
We both agreed that for dinner sushi seemed a satisfying choice. Just driving up Colorado Blvd, I happened to spot a tiny hole in the wall, half curtained spot at 45 Colorado, just north of Marengo. 02 Sushi, has just been open for about 6 weeks now but is pure heaven. A nice sushi bar and about 10 tables. Fantastic hospitality and superb menu. We were the first patrons at 5 p.m. When we left at 7:30 there were two other duos, a family party of 8 and a couple at the Sushi Bar. I'm sure they're jammed at lunch because of the location but their evening business is sure to increase with their sterling reputation. My GD had snowcrab, we shared gyoza, seaweed salad and I had uni and unagi. I noticed that monkfish liver was on the menu and mentioned to Agnes how much I liked it but had already eaten enough.
BJ, the chef came over to our table and chatted with us, made sure we had enjoyed our meal and then asked us to please wait as he had a special treat in store for us, even though he knew we had eaten our fill. I enjoyed some tea for about 20 minutes while I digested the meal. Then the chef himself served a beautiful plate of 5 small medallions of miso poached monkfish liver. Utterly divine and better than any dessert I've ever eaten. When we arrived home the next week, I wrote them a note of thanks. The letter was returned to me saying the Sushi Restaurant had moved. I had to return the letter by registered mail because the former owners had the word Sushi in their name it was confused with the name of 02 Sushi. So I hope they receive any further mail addressed to them. But, next trip in LA, we're stopping here again!
We did NOT leave L.A. without picking up pastrami sandwiches from Langers. I first became addicted to these monsters when I was pregnant in 1959 and hit them up weekly. Oh,man, they are just as good now as they were those many long years ago. We ate our sandwiches in the park in South Pas and I shared my leftover half with one of the homeless. I'm sure he will look for me everyday. Glad I could share.
Please, help me find this place.
Thanks to all for the help and suggestions. I will definitely be going to Eliott's for oysters (thanks, Tom, for the tips)and the Corson Bldg is now on our list. Someone please tell me something about Rover's, if it's still there. Last time I was in Seattle I ate at a bakery that served lunch and it was scrumptious. I was told the owner also had a dinner restaurant but I didn't have time to get there. I'd like to return to the bakery but I forget the name.
I love fish and seafood but not always the usual...how about some monkfish or
We're hoping the April weather will be dry at least a couple of days and we'd like to compose a picnic...should I plan on getting all the ingredients at the Market or is there anywhere else in town that has something exceptional to add. What's your favorite local must have wine with sausages, cheese, bread, fruit and chocolate?
I'm really looking forward to visiting, eating and sightseeing in your great city and I'll report back.
Please, help me find this place.
A couple of years ago a friend visited a restaurant she decribed to me as " a little troll's house". It was under a bridge or freeway or some non-descript place but she said her dinner was an epiphany. I can't remember the name of the place. Does anyone know of such a place or whether it's still here? It sounded totally fascinating.
We'll be in Seattle for a week in April. Where can I find the best:
1. gelato
2. breakfast
3. chocolate
4. oysters
And what is the ONE PLACE I cannot miss in Seattle for which product?
Of course, we'll be exploring the market, plan on Salumi and Joule.
We will have a car and go anywhere in the city. I value the Chowhound selections.
Thank you so much, Oink!
Strange search but....

Pismo's Coastal Cuisine of Fresno
In reply to PolarBear..5 of us stopped in Pismo's for lunch yesterday. Everyone was happy.
We had a scrumptious and huge (5 giant prawns) shrimp cocktail...yummy, a bowl of smooth crab bisque, a 5 star cioppino, my calamari was excellent AND the veggies were steamed al dente, one had a fish similar to Mahi-Mahi, one had fish and chips (garlic fries) and one (out numbered non fish eater) had the tri-tip sand. The server was fairly new but very eager to please and pleasant. They were busy but we got seated in 5-10 minutes. Very clean and pleasant. Highly recommended. Are they a stand alone or affiliated with other restaurants? I haven't been up here in awhile.
What is black garlic?
We dined out last night and had grits flavored with fermented black garlic. I heard it 's imported from Thailand. What gives it it's flavor and where can we buy it.
Ocean beach, San diego. Where to eat.
Don't miss out on Pepe's on Sunset between Niagara and Narragansett. It's Italian, not Mexican but you will like the place. Homemade pasta, fresh salads, congenial atmosphere. Very local, family oriented, reasonable.
Ortegas are probably the most creative Poma's have good take out sandwiches, and anything from Olive Tree Deli is a winner. Good Pastrami sand.
Super Cocina is fabulous but Texcoco you don't want to miss, it's worth the trip. Real McCoy and you can't find this stuff everywhere. Even their drinks are superior..fabulous horchata and jamaica..don't go for the canned sodas. Do try their flan, it's excellent.
Prune Danish?
A few of us are headed back to NYC again and believe me, we'll stock up before we leave.
I can't find any in L.A. even.
Thanks so much for all the recs. I'm going to see if any of them ship. Pretty fragile stuff but where there's a will there's a way, or so I've heard.
french food in san diego?
Why has no one mentioned Hexagone at 5th and Laurel? Or even the French Market Grille in the outskirts.
Both are quite fine. I don't think they belong in the last paragraph of naomi's post.
Prices are fair, selection is good, wines are affordable as are the menu prices. Service may be a bit inconsistent but the heart is good.
seeking apps /drinks type venue in San Diego
To accomodate a party of 16 you'd pretty much have to sit outside at 3rd Corner.
But it would be great if it were warm enough.
Foods you love at Trader Joe's that got discontinued? [OLD]
YES! Last week they advertised 1 liter of Sauza's Hacienda Reposada for $9.99.
Get outta here. I bought 2 to test the waters and went back 3 days later to find they had sold out and probably wouldn't get any more. BOO. I should have bought 4 or 5 and used them as hostess gifts.
I just got 4 bottles of La Loggia Barolo before they were gone. Would have gotten more but don't have the proper storage.
Homemade Sriracha?
This reminds me of when we used to make our own apple cider. We'd leave it under the sink and forget about it. The fermentation would cause the cork to blow and scared the hell out of us. And when my kids were teenagers and into chemistry, their bedrooms were upstairs, mine was downstairs. I think you should brew this stuff in the attic and run.
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
Reply to Samuelinthekitchen May 11
I LOVE your style...half a pig and two ducks. My two favorite foods but have to add fish.
This is similar to how I feel after visiting my vegetarian daughter's home.
And I'm not even a butcher's daughter.
We live and learn.
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
#1 When I was in elementary school in a town in Iowa, all the butchers and bakers were Czechs. Whenever we got a nickle, which was very seldom in those days, others would buy candy or ice cream. I always got a thick slab of sausage and nibbled it all the way home. Been looking for this bologna ever since..not to be found.
#2 My parents lived on the coast in Mexico for years after I was grown. My children and I would visit often. I'd always take my dad a box of cigars and in return he always had ready for me a 5lb bag of sea bass that he had caught, meticulously boned and smoked.
Sea Bass is gone, so is Dad.
#3 Mulberries from the tree in my front yard in Los Angeles. Kids weren't allowed to eat them without taking off their shirts. I have difficulty finding fresh mulberries these days.
Good for your heart...
A favorite at my vegetarian daughter's house is Hummus with added black beans. It's a great moisturizer for greens in tortilla wraps or pita bread.
Hummus........SANCHEZ style
2 cans Garbanzo Beans
1 Can Black Beans
2 - (2.25 oz) cans Jalapeno Olives (1 can stranned)
1/3C. Tahinni ( sesame seed butter)
1/4C. Olive Oil
1/4c Fresh Lemon Juice
1-2 fresh Jalapenos diced
2 heaping TBSP Cumin
1tsp Tyme
salt and pepper to taste
Or you can use a packaged Menudo Mix seasoning.
Mexican cooking class in SD
Yesterday's UT mentioned "Isabel's Cantina"

$60.
Reservations: *58/ 454-0347
The article didn't even mention what she was cooking. Hmmm.
Get a hold of Dining Diva, she makes the best Mexican food in town and occasionally gives private classes or at least can give you the best advice on where to find what you're looking for:

What else is your go to breakfast besides eggs?
Oh, Sam Fuji! If there's one guy I want to meet it's him. I love that you eat fruit, yogurt, wheat germ and honey at home. I ate that everyday when I was in Mexico City 20 years ago and we never got hungry til late in the afternoon. But, man, what you eat on the road! You must have an iron constitution or else you have Your bourbon and water facsimile before every meal, and probably with?
.
I love gruel..10 grain cereal with any combination of dried fruits and nuts.
Lox and bagels, onions, capers, etc.
Chilequilles, beans.
Rice bowl.
Sourdough Toast with Ginger marmalade. Hot, black coffee.
In the summer: A Fresno cantaloupe right off the vine. slurp.
Food in a tortilla is just better
You certainly are an adventurous eater.
You may just be correct. Certainly, anything fits in a tortilla and considering the sizes and types of tortillas available today, the possibilities must be infinite. I love tacos and tortilla wraps and they're lighter than sandwiches made with bread. I did mention to the proprietor of a favorite Mexican restaurant that when I discovered a graceful way to eat a taco, I would patent it. He told me it would never fly. I used to make my own tortillas but that was too many years ago to count. Still, when I find handmade ones, I can't get enough. Come tortillas por la vida!
Pies - Sweet or Savoury - Your Favourite
S.A, being South Africa or South America?
Oh, mutton curry sounds intriguing, are there veggies in it?
I do enjoy spicy empanadas with meat and fruit.
I'm not a real pie person but I do enjoy an irresistible hot deep dish berry pie with ice cream. But I must say my favorite sweet pie must be lemon meringue...light and not too sweet.
'fess up, "i'm a hog when it comes to eating ____ ."
hog, WHOLE hog...bacon, sausage, carnitas, ears, tails, feet, snout, ribs, shoulder, shanks, chicharones and all the rest of it. Oink!
Next...oysters, mussels, scallops
Pates, cheeses...ooey, gooey, yummy and butter.
figs, avocados, persimmons, mangoes, raspberries, apricots
pinones, pecans and pistachios
Lemon mousse
Chile Verde
Vegetarian in San Diego..
Fairouz on Midway has some nice veggie dishes. My daughter is vegetarian and enjoyed Cafe One Three on Park Blvd. There are a few veget. dishes but in addition, their food is very healthy with no preservatives and quality ingredients. Desserts are special.
Sit down Mexican in Chula Vista
How was your experience? what did you eat? What is your opinion of Godoy?
It probably is the best not too casual sit down in west Chula. The menu is extensive.
