Brown Bag Sandwiches - Church and Granby (South of Carlton)

The wife and I had lunch here last week. I'm a huge fan of a sandwiches. We're not normally in this area so we bought a little more than necessary! I had the asian duck sandwich as well as the pork belly. My wife had the fried chicken sandwich. I was absolutely starving so I didn't spend a great deal of time savouring the flavours of my lunch. They were very tasty though. The duck had some cracklins in there which was a pleasant treat. The pork belly was wonderfully fatty. The homemade relish they use on it went well. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her fried chicken sandwich. I didn't get a chance to taste it, but I probably will the next time we're in the neighbourhood. I also plan to test out the brisket sandwich. They have an in-house smoker and the place smelled wonderful.

On Oahu, Macadamia Nut Pancakes at Boots and Kimo's

Can someone tell me what time they stop serving these pancakes? Or is it an all-day breakfast menu?

Help with good eats in Oahu

Thanks, guys.

Decided to make reservations at Town and also Sasabune. Both sounded awesome, and offered reservations so those aided in my decision making.

Think I've got most dinners figured out now. Can anyone offer up some great lunch options?

Thanks again.

Help with good eats in Oahu

Hello,

My fiancee and I will be in Oahu October 2-7. Our first time to Hawaii so we're really excited.

I need some suggestions for some great places to eat. More specifically, dinner places.

We'd like to take in as much traditional Hawaiian cuisine as we can during our short stay. Not so much interest in touristy stuff (we do have some, like Leonards, that we plan to visit).

We'll be staying in Waikiki, but will have a car rental so driving around the island is not a problem. Would prefer not to have to search high and low for parking though.

From other threads, we've decided to visit a few places already:

- Alan Wong's Restaurant for dinner (already have a reservation)
- Helena's Hawaiian for lunch
- Romy's Shrimp Truck for lunch (can anyone suggest something else to do up on the north shore?)
- Nobu for dinner (have a reservation, but not sure if we will be keeping it)

We typically eat dinner 6-8PM, and have noticed that many of the popular greasy spoon places are only open until around 5 or 7PM. We'll probably visit these places for lunch. What we're missing is more dinner options. We LOVE seafood, and are hoping that the seafood is fantastic in Hawaii. Can anyone suggest a good seafood restaurant? Even better if it's prepared in a traditional Hawaiian way. VERY good sushi would also be nice. We have Nobu listed, but I'm wondering if it's more of a fusion than true Sushi.

Any help would be appreciated!

sourdough starters

I've actually bought from King Arthur Flour and had it shipped to Toronto. No problems. Worked out great!

Any Good BBQ or Steakhouses in GTA?

Stockyards isn't always serving BBQ. So double check before you head over.

I've never eaten at the location in Toronto, but the Morton's in Troy, Michigan was incredible!

Momofuku wait times this holiday season?

Hey guys. I'm from Toronto and will be in town with my gf Dec 26-29. I've heard quite a bit about the different Momofuku locations. We plan to have dinner at atleast one of the locations. From what I have read, Ko is near impossible to get a reservation so it's been ruled out. We are considering Noodle Bar and Ssam Bar. Can anyone give me an idea of wait times around prime dinner time (6-8pm) on those dates? An hour or more? We'd likely be taking a cab there so it'd be great to know ahead of time what to expect.

On a side note, we will also be doing a lot of shopping that day. Is it terribly busy at either of these locations where we really wouldn't have anywhere to put down our shopping bags?

Thanks!

Uncured Ham

Boneless is actually what I'm looking for. Thanks for this!

Uncured Ham

Anyone know of a butcher where I can pickup a good size uncured ham? I live in Richmond Hill, but don't mind taking a short drive to pick one up.

Thanks.

Toronto's Best Fried Chicken

Tried it. Didn't care for the sauced version, but the original was VERY good. Will be going back.

Anyone know where I can pickup single serve packets of condiments?

Ketchup, mustard, and relish.

Preferably Heinz.

Thanks!

ISO: Sausage Casings

I don't know anything about sausage casings, but I do know I saw some "collagen" casings at Bass Pro Shop in Vaughan Mills.

Source for Hot Dogs and buns used by street vendors?

Yes, they do sell sausages but I didn't pick any up that day.

Interesting that they don't stick to one bun supplier.

Source for Hot Dogs and buns used by street vendors?

I went to Champs this weekend. The buns they sell there are from B&A Bakery. I bought a package of 33 all beef hot dogs ($18), and a package of a dozen yellow buns ($2.75?). The total came to $20.75. Not sure if the prices I was quoted included taxes or not.

Grilled up some up this weekend. They taste great. I'm sure MANY vendors use these buns made by B&A, but the ones I really want are the yellow ones with poppy seeds.

Fraticellis Italian Grill in Richmond Hill needs a lot of work

I guess they haven't gotten any better...

I was there with a group of friends within the first few weeks of opening. It was a Saturday evening around 6PM. My friends wanted to check this place out as we've all driven passed it many times as it was being built. We decided to call ahead to see if there was a long wait and to see if a reservation was possible. The employee that answered told us that there is a bit of a wait, but if we head down now, they can put our name on the list and the wait should only be about 20 minutes.

We arrived, checked-in, and waited for well over an hour. The floor manager came out to apologize to everyone in the waiting area and said that our tables were all ready, but they just had a few very large parties finish up and that the kitchen was asking if he could slow seating down. We all thought that made absolutely no sense for us to all stay standing considering our tables were ready. Pretty sure he wasn't telling the truth.

After another 30 minutes, we were seated. We sat for another 20-25 minutes and were completely ignored. We decided to flag someone down so that we could get our order going. After the waiter took our order, my friend took note of the time - it was 8:30PM (about 2 hours after checking in).

Some of us ordered appetizers and drinks and those came about 20 minutes in. After appetizers, the ones that didn't eat were absolutely starving. We figured it should take no longer than 20-25 minutes for our entrees to come out at this point.

After 40 minutes of impatiently waiting we all decided that we'd had enough and were going to get up and leave. A couple of us had ordered appetizers as well as drinks so we flagged down the waiter and told him we were leaving and if he could just give us the bill for what we owed. He was shocked, and then told us "Oh your food is ready RIGHT NOW!". We didn't believe him. We thought it'd be a bit of a dick move to actually leave if the food really was ready though so we asked him if EVERYONE'S food was ready. We told him we didn't want to wait any longer and if it'wasn't then we'd be leaving. He assured us it was and ran to the kitchen. He came back with 4 of 6 entrees and told us the other 2 were coming out right now. None of us touched our food because we didn't believe the food was ready. At that point, We were intent on leaving.

The last two entrees didn't come for another 15 (about 10PM now) and we told the waiter that we weren't paying for this and were going to leave. He said "uh oh, I'm going to have to bring the manager over then". We then watched the manager walk all around the restaurant, while completely avoiding our area. The waiter eventually returned and told us that our bill would be discounted, and that dessert was on the house. We said OK, and each ordered a dessert. When we received the bill, we saw that they discounted it 50% which most of us thought was reasonable. They also included $10 gift cards for everyone at the table (which we could not use to pay the current bill). Manager never came to our table. We paid the bill, and left the restaurant. Exit time was about 10:45PM.

It hadn't been open for long so I figured they were still working out bugs. Reading your thread tells me they haven't gotten much better.

Pink Burger. Huh??

Five Guys Burgers and Fries opening in Kingston

From what I have read, all their toppings are no additional charge.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries opening in Kingston

So I was reading a Yahoo! article about burgers and they mentioned that the new hot burger in the US is Five Guys Burgers, which Zagats had edging out In-N-Out as top burger. I haven't heard anything about this new place. They have locations scattered across the US, and a Canadian location opening soon in Kingston. Anyone ever been?

Wanted - Butcher selling organic, hormone free, free run/cage free, grass fed beef and chicken

Can anyone recommend a butcher that sells grass fed beef north of the downtown core?

Food challenges in the GTA? (Man v. Food)

So I've been watching a lot of Man Vs Food on the travel channel and was wondering what challenges are local to Toronto.

I only know of typical ones like the 72oz steak at Lonestar's, and the wall at Duff's. Can anyone name any other interesting local challenges?

I'm always willing to try the spiciest dishes available. Not really into gluttony challenges, but let's hear em all!

Papa John's Pizza

Thanks for the replies, guys. This was originally posted in my regional Ontario, Canada board. I guess the mods moved it here where I'm sure most of my fellow Canadians WON'T see it. :-\

Papa John's Pizza

I feel silly posting this, but has anyone here tried Papa John's pizza? We've all seen the commercials on US networks. I have American friends that say it is by far the best chain pizza. I decided to hop on to their website and see if i'd be able to find a location near Buffalo. Low and behold, I discovered a few locations in Ontario! There are a couple in London and one in Kitchener. Has anyone tried any of these Canadian Papa John's locations?

Orchid Chai Bistro (Thai ), Markham - Chowhounder confirmation needed

I think Stars of Thai is still open. At least the sign is still there. Orchid is one of the restaurants on the outside of First Markham Place which is on the south side of Hwy 7. It occupies the same unit that the old bubble tea restaurant Eternity used to be in.

Orchid Chai Bistro (Thai ), Markham - Chowhounder confirmation needed

I went there last night. It was OkAy...

I've never had "authentic" thai cuisine so I can't really draw any comparisons. The portion sizes are a bit on the small side, however, the dishes aren't all too expensive. Prices range from $7-10 on average. The pad thai definitely did not have any ketchup in it. It was, however, sprinkled with crushed chili peppers which made it interesting.

At the bottom of the menu there is the typical 1 pepper, 2 pepper spiciness rating system with an option to ask for even spicier. For the green curry chicken we ordered, I asked for spicier. I was a bit disappointed when it came though. The green curry "sauce" tasted great...but there wasn't much spice at all. Mind you, I can handle a good amount of heat. There was also very little chicken! Mostly small scraps of dark meat which was really upsetting. I've yet to find a better green curry chicken than the one served at Restoran Malaysia. They provide nice big hunks of chicken breast.

Next we had the "golden eggs" which are simply fried (deep fried maybe?) boiled eggs with a tamarind-like sauce over top. Nothing to write home about.

The basil fried rice with shrimp was also rather mediocre. Nothing special about it.

Lastly, we had the basil beef which was reasonably spiced, but VERY VERY small. I'd say it was more like a small appetizer than an entree.

I don't know if it was because the tables there are small, or just a lack of kitchen staff but they were only bringing us one dish at a time. We had 4 starving people at this tiny table. We were demolishing each small dish shortly after they arrived. After the first two dishes we found ourselves trying to savour each one because the next took so long to arrive.

At the end, I was still hungry and requested the bill. They actually gave us another table's bill which was MUCH more than ours. I didn't actually catch it until I had my jacket on and was ready to leave. An honest mistake, but considering I was still starving it left a sour taste in my mouth.

All in all, the pad thai there is quite good. Portions are rather small. Wait times between dishes are long. I don't think I'll be going back. Maybe if I want bubble tea. Oh did I forget to mention that it's also a bubble tea cafe? I wished i noticed that before sitting down and ordering.

Hungarian Paprika

Hey all,

I haven't looked all too hard for this stuff, but I know my local supermarkets don't carry it. Anyone know where I can find it? I live in Richmond Hill but don't mind traveling to get it as long as there's parking. I've already got some Spanish paprika from WIlliams-Sonoma.

Thanks.

Hottest/Spiciest Dish in Toronto

I have eaten Duff's Armageddon Wings a bunch of times. They are HOT, but I can finish the plate.

A couple months back I had the Coo Coo Sauce wings at CW Coops in Aurora. They made me sign a disclaimer (I took a picture of it too). My friend and I ordered 20 Coo Coo, and 10 of another weaker flavour. They accidentally brought us 30 Coo Coo and ended up giving us the other 10 when we mentioned the goof. They threw in the extra 10 Coo Coo at no charge. Anyway, they are good wings. VERY hot. I ate about 8 of them before I felt VERY sick. I think eating them on an empty stomach, along with all the beer I had to chug because they were so incredibly hot added to the sickness. I consider myself a chilihead, and these definitely kicked my butt

I must note though that I believe CW Coops uses a lot of extract in their Coo Coo sauce (which is a bit like cheating IMO).

Best burgers

Good burger. But the bun has failed on me each time I've had it. It's way too small, and eventually shreds to bits

Spicy Beef Noddle Soup

This is actually the new Taiwan Noodle House. From what I have heard, it is exactly the same, but new owner. Same staff, same food, same menu (with a sticker over the old name!).

Spicy Beef Noddle Soup

Are you referring to Taiwan Noodle House? That's the corner restaurant in the same plaza as Pho Hoa. That place makes the best spicy beef brisket noodle as far as I'm concerned!
