Experienced an almost perfect wine pairing for Cantonese Seafood at Maple Yip.

I was going to make the same comment. I tried their strawberry grouper twice and, though the steaming skills were fine, the fish texture and flavor was off. Just didn't taste fresh as compared to the fish in Hong Kong.

ISO HOME made Shrimp Chips

I agree with the tip that it is on high selves. Best to ask the staff, and may be arm yourself with a picture if you don't speak both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Hot Pot ...Take Out

They sell soup bases made by Lee Kum Kee (chicken, fish, satay, spicy Sichuan are some of the varieties available). Your best bet is to look it up and show the staff a picture so they can point you to the right aisle.

The meat will be in the frozen section, they either come sliced and stacked (which is a bit of a pain to defrost) or in rolls (one slice per roll) which can be cooked from frozen. Your options are chicken, beef, lamb and pork.

The butcher counter will also have meatballs and the fish counter (or the fish freezer area) will have fish balls.

Vermicelli will be in the dried noodle section (and needs to be soaked ahead of time) or you can grab some fresh rice noodles near the soy milk section or some frozen udon in the frozen dumpling section.

And don't forget to grab some veg and dipping sauces (chili oil, soy sauce, peanut sauce, sesame oil, etc).

In response to the loriginal post. I get my hotpot meat at famu in J-Town. It is the best meat for hotpot as even the leaner cuts are super juicy and tender. They also sell Sukiyaki sets with tofu, napa cabbage, home-made udon, etc. I've never bought the set before, but if the meal is for one or two people, it is nice to just have a bit of a variety and no left overs.

Texas sized donut

I'm travelling to Houston next month and promised to bring a friend back a "Texas sized donut" (the one's the size of your head). I tried to google it, but only saw that Round Rock had them. Does anyone know of where in Houston I can find this donut? If possible, at a place by the Galleria area/the IAH airport or anywhere in between. Thanks!

ISO Out of ordinary catering under 100pp

Indian caterers are cheap. My friend's wedding some 10 years ago was 15pp. Chinese caterers could also come in under 100.

Pearl at Bayview Village

I went this weekend for dimsum as I was avoiding the CNY rush/red envelop distribution at my usual spots. The dimsum menu is surprisingly large and the quality was not bad. I wonder if all the dimsum is made in house or shipped over from the sister restaurant to be reheated. We got the siu mai, beef siu mai, chicken feet, mixed veggie rice noodle roll, friend chicken wings, stuffed fried eggplant and a chicken chow mein. The rice noodle roll was surprisingly thin and had a good slippery feel to it, though i think it might have been microwaved rather than freshly rolled. I also got a peak of the har gow and notice that the skin looked grainy and not as translucent. It was also a little strange eating with a large plate and to have a fork along with my chopsticks rather than a spoon, but service was fine and prices were not too bad. We had 4 people and paid $60 including tax and tip. I would go back. Also, you can ask for a fortune cookie with your bill (standard if you are non-Asian), which I enjoy.

where to buy porcini powder, flavor pearls and need other unique ingredient suggestions

I get my porcini powder from Misty Mountain (mushroom wholesaler) when I'm in Vancouver. They sell retail and it comes in a spice bottle. It's quite light, so you can likely just order it and have it shipped to you.

Can we revisit the PATH?

I haven't tried Noodle King, but I kind of like Modern Wok in 145 King. They have bitter melon as a combo option, half sizes and my latest obsession is the beef brisket/tendon rice noodle. The noodles are not the best but the topping is tender and well-seasoned. Plus I enjoy a proper chili-oil (not the best oil, but way better than wing's hot sauce).

Dear Terroni - I Might Have to Break Up with You

The last time I was at Terroni's a friend's friend paid for the meal. The service was terrible the entire night and basic requests ("can we get some bread please?"), were ignored. I don't know what they tipped the server, but I'm sure it wasn't much since she ran after us to tell us we didn't leave enough tip.

I was speaking to another friend about it recently and the same thing happened to her. Same location too (old courthouse). I don't understand this brand of service.

Where to eat in Chatham?

I was in Chatham for business last week and ended up eating Swiss Chalet because the options didn't look that promising. I'm headed back again in a couple of weeks and was hoping to for something less commercial. Any suggestions?

Chicken livers, organic or natural

I'm 95% sure Famu at J-Town carries them. They also deep-fry it to sell, so I'm just not sure how much stock they have for uncooked liver.

I do the same. I sauce all tomatoes. I also cut them in half and can them (seeds removed) with garlic and basil for a bruchetta topping.

ISO : Curds for Mozarella

I hunted for this a long time too and ended up finding this place through a friend of a friend:

Not in curd form but a big block of raw curds can be bought from them, just call ahead. I tried doing it once and the cheese was fantastic fresh, but I could really tell that I over worked it when I had it the next day, too much fat ran out and it was sort of tough. But you can give it a go yourself. Good luck.

They also sell the scamorza curds raw that is used in some sort of ethnic dessert, but I don't remember the details.

Oh and they also sell the buffalo moazzarella that I believe they source for Terroni's and Pizza Liberato. It's worth the drive just going there for that.

ISO Shaved Steak in Toronto/GTA

Sorry, I meant Famu (auto correct changed my original post) in J-Town. J-Town is a complex filled with small Japanese stores. There is a butcher there call Famu, which shaves meat for Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu use. I don't like the fish market there, but the butcher has some great product.

ISO Shaved Steak in Toronto/GTA

I never read the article, so I don't know the application of the meat. But fame in J-town has fantastic naturally raised thinly slice meat for hotpot. If you're looking for a different thickness they also have a deli slicer.

Where can I get shabu shabu take out

You can order trays of everything you need for Shabu Shabu or Sukiyaki from Famu in J-town. A little pricey because of the quality meat (Wagyu), but their meat is really good. I also remember T&T use to sell premade trays of hotpot stuff during the winter, but the quality is not that great and if you're going to go to T&T, you might as well just buy all the ingredients separate. They have sliced meat in the frozen meat section (go for the rolled one's int eh box rather then the sliced pack to not have to worry about defrosting). But I'm telling you, after having just regular sliced Angus from Famu (I've never bought the pre-made stuff, so I've never tried the Wagyu), I can't go back to T&T meat.
