Solid Road Food Along 95/295 btwn Portland and Augusta?

Well, as close as we can get to it....we just have to be in Augusta by 10:30 pm and it will be a late dinner as is.

Sounds good. Any favorites in Portland?---craft beer is another criteria. Thanks!

Solid Road Food Along 95/295 btwn Portland and Augusta?

Driving from DC to Augusta in a few weeks on a Friday for a conference and am planning my dinner with my wife. I am going to be driving pretty much all out so I can't stop too long for...1 hour minutes max. We could stop in Portland but that's not essential. Looking for traditional hearty down east fare, lobster is a plus. So is pie. 15-20 bucks per person.

thanks!

Generous portions, cheap prices, good food--is it possible in NYC anymore?

Thanks all! Yes, death to small plates.

Generous portions, cheap prices, good food--is it possible in NYC anymore?

I pretty much stopped eating out in NYC because of the number of times I left good, well-reviewed restaurants hungry. I'm not a large person; rather I'm a skinny marathoner but I have the metabolism of the hummingbird. Last time I checked, one pursues a sit-down meal in a restaurant to be fed. Call me crazy but this is still my goal. I've decided to try again. I feel like such a failure when friends come to town ready to eat, and I can't suggest anything.

My requirements:

Budget $10-$15

Type of cuisine: Any except vegetarian.

Portions: I want to eat a lot over a long period of time. Dinner should last 45 min at least. No one should be hurrying me out. This is offensive. I should have the option of taking home a doggy bag.

Neighborhoods: Lower Manhattan, brownstone Brooklyn, Queens close to transit

I know I can find various buffets in this price range (Jackson Heights comes to mind) but I'm kind of over them. I want made-to-order meals from actual restaurants. Nothing has to be fancy, just solid good eating.

Any ideas or should I give up on eating out in this city?

How to transform awful Amazon sesame sticks

1) Amazon suffered my wrath. Not to worry.

2) I have a problem with throwing out anything vaguely useable.

How to transform awful Amazon sesame sticks

I unwisely ordered 20 lbs of sesame snack sticks from Amazon Warehouse Deals. You get what you pay for. They have the consistency of cardboard and taste little better. I do think I can transform them however and am looking for ideas. I'm into spice, sweet, Sriracha, ginger, basil, anything to mask the taste.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Cheapest Place to Buy Beer by the Case?

In most of the sane universe, a case of PBR will run you around $11.99. I was chagrined, appalled and offended to discover it regularly tops $19.99 here. Can anyone direct me toward a purveyor of ethically priced cheap beer in the city?

Scandinavian flour and baking supplies?

Can anyone recommend a source in the US for Scandinavian baking supplies? I need flours in particular. All-purpose just isn't up to scratch for the bread recipes I want to tackles.

12 hour layover in Amsterdam. Lunch, breakfast or both?

I arrive en route to Istanbul at 0800 on Friday. I was thinking of hopping on the train and going into AMS. Any recommendations for plentiful and cheap Dutch food in the center of town?

Abba Herring in NYC? Cost?

I'm glad the quarry has been located. I'll pay a visit next time I'm on the UES.

The family and I have just boiled fingerlings, brussel sprouts and rutabaga with generous bits of the Blue Hill Bay version on top. Salted and peppered with a little horseradish on the side. A fine Christmas morning.

Abba Herring in NYC? Cost?

Thanks for looking. I actually bit the bullet and went with the Blue Hill Bay brand yesterday at the New Amsterdam market in South Street Seaport. Acme was selling 26 oz jars in wine marinate for $5.00. Possibly the best deal on the face of the planet in a year in which, according to the guy from Acme, herring stocks have largely collapsed in the North Atlantic and Baltic.

more Brooklyn Fairway disappointment

Try dealing with the Fairway Redhook customer service. They are literally some of the dumbest people you will ever interact with.

Abba Herring in NYC? Cost?

Thanks ForestHillsFresser, let us know! Yes, I'm pretty sure Abba is one of the few veritable brands that does Scandinavian herring. Acme, Wikstom's et al source their fish in Canada. The Swedish stuff just seems fresher to me.

Abba Herring in NYC? Cost?

Anyone know where I can find Abba herring in the city in the 8 oz jars, any marinate? I called Fairway in Red Hook but their customer service is absolutely worthless. I'd prefer not to pay more than $4.00/jar as I'm looking to take mass quantities back to El Salvador with me.

Where can I find pickled herring?

I agree. Vita is an insult to Nordic seafood. No grocery store should carry them.

La Libertad, El Salvador Any Recs?

You actually can go wrong. El Tunco seems to be passing a certain tipping point where the prices are still low but portions and quality are getting crappier. I'm thinking of the 2-story fish taco place on the main drag heading toward the beach. But this is what happens when you get too many easy-money backpackers concentrated in one place.

Best Instant Coffee

My question is this: Is Nescafe Classico which you can now buy in most urban supermarkets in the US the same as you get the south of the border?

I'm looking to match whatever the recipe they use for Moroccan Nescafe, which is like 80% robusta, unbelievably tasty, and make Starbucks look like the joke that it is.

Whole Foods Makes Us Lazy Cooks

With all due respect to the arthritic, Whole Foods is a grand indication of the wussification of American cooking. It doesn't get anymore mindless, or overpriced. And, Amyzan, your nephew should be given a medal of valor given how much Whole Foods wastes everyday.

A True Literary Cafe Anywhere in New York??

Thanks, all. Noob, special appreciation for the Brooklyn rec's though I've tried Cafe Peddlar and it fails in a number of categories: overpriced, blatant indie rock at all hours, blaring toddlers. It certainly LOOKS like the veritable continental cafe, but, as with so many places in the city, seeing is not believing.

A True Literary Cafe Anywhere in New York??

I am looking for the ephemeral Euro-style cafe that is actually Euro-style and does not just pay homage to a cafe experience that even New Yorkers seem genetically incapable of having. Does it exist?

Here's how it will go: I will order my coffee (I don't give a hoot if it's cafe au lait, Japanese-pressed or made from ground unicorn antlers, as long as it's strong and I pay less than $3.00). I will find my sunny table by a window or on a velvet divan not encrusted in brownie crumbs. There will be NO or VERY LOW music playing. I will open my Richard Ford novel and read for the next hour. NO STAFF will bother me in the next hour. They will not ask me if I want something else, if am feeling peckish, if I'm okay, etc, etc. NO PATRONS will talk on the their cell phones or have overly loud conversations about their roommates. NO ONE will tweet anyone else. Preferably I could smoke at some point but I know that likely impossible without legal recourse.

I'm looking for all of this to happen in an unpretentious setting, hopefully below 14th Street or Bklyn.

It's sad to be sure. They have sold out and should be ashamed of themselves. You can honestly get a better pastrami on rye in Virginia now.

The last time Pierce's was good was about 1985. They now put Velveeta on a barbeque sandwich--one of the foulest things you could ever do to BBQ.

Why can't NY understand the croissant?

I second this, and though the idea of Mexicans making croissants maybe anathema to many of you, the Latino panaderias on 5th Ave in Sunset Park blow most Manhattan "bakeries" out of the water.
