Lawrence, KS - GC Recommendations
We'd like to buy a gift certificate for a family member who lives very close to Lawrence, KS. We'd like it to be at a nice restaurant where she & her husband can have a nice kid-free night out. We're thinking of spending in the $100 range. Any suggestions for a great meal that they will truly appreciate?
KC, MO Patios (Kansas City)
Another often overlooked patio is the one at Grand Street on the Plaza, which I think is pretty nice.
KCMO- Green Dirt Farm
We buy a new type of cheese almost every week from them on our trips to the City Market...I have to say that the Lovage & the Firecracker are my favorites. Also, the ladies are so lovely and so patient and the cheese is so smooth & delicious that I'm kind of hooked. Can't wait to make it out to the farm!
Kansas City Tacos
The Salvadorean place on Independence Avenue (Sabor de Centro Americano?) has awesome huge burritos that are super cheap. They reminded me of a more authentic Chipotle, and came with pretty zippy salsa. Also, they have excellent pupusas.
KC - Blue Grotto anyone?
I went to Blue Grotto last week - it was my first time there and I was mighty hesitant, mostly based on things I've read about it. I was pleasantly surprised, and possibly because my expectations were so low. The back patio is a lovely place to hang out in the summer, I had a really delicious glass of wine I'd never tried before, and my pizza and salad were pretty tasty. We had the Funghi pizza and the Grotto salad (with apples and gorgonzola) and received really good service. It is not my first choice in KC pizza places, but I would definitely go back.
Morel Mushrooms in Kansas City 2009?
There was a guy in the Price Chopper parking lot tonight when we were leaving - selling them out of his trunk. The Price Chopper was on Vivion & N Oak.
Interesting way to serve fruit for party
For a wedding I catered, I cut a melon in half to serve as the base. I then threaded colorful fruit on skewers (grapes, pineapple chunks, strawberry halves, etc) and stuck the skewers into the melon. It ended up looking like a fruit satellite and was really kind of beautiful.
I wish I had a photo to show you!
south/north tahoe recs - liquor store?
we're headed to tahoe this week - and are staying in south lake tahoe one night, sunnyside the rest of the weekend...
looking for a good liquor store to stock up on excellent local beers that we can't get here in the midwest. any recommendations for shops that have a great local beer line up?
thanks so much.
Happy Soup Eater, Kansas City?
It was most recently SO Redux, and before that something like the "Tasty Box" or something similar.
Places to eat and see in Westin, MO
We ate at the Vineyards for lunch and truly enjoyed it. Dinner at the America Bowman was also very good, followed by many an Irish Ale at O'Malley's. It was a good full day, filled in with window-shopping and Raspberry Mead purchases at Pirtle Winery.
Weston is a great day trip!
dive bars in KC with good food or not
Twin City Tavern - lots of fried things, but surprisingly tasty.
KC - croissants for christmas
okay, all of those suggestions sound amazing.
now to choose.
thank you thank you!
KC - croissants for christmas
My husband and I start every Christmas morning with mimosas at home and filled croissants from Napoleon Bakery. Ham and cheese for him, almond filled for me...and of course one or two chocolate filled to nibble on the rest of the day.
So I'm terribly depressed about our prospects for this Christmas with no Napoleon treats to enjoy. Any suggestions for where I could find a good, buttery filled croissant for Christmas?
I live near downtown, but could be persuaded to drive. Good baked goods are worth a drive.
Happy Holidays!
Birthday Cake bakery (KC)
We ordered our wedding cake from McClain's and were really happy with it. It was a chocolate cake - not too sweet, very moist. I ordered a 5th anniversary cake from them just last year and liked it just as well.
chilaquiles kc?
thanks! it's worth a try....
i figured because of all the good mexican we have in KC, someone would have them, but hadn't come across them yet...
chilaquiles kc?
i'm looking for good chilaquiles in KC and wondering if anyone knows where to find them??
thanks!!
KC Newbie
I have to second the recommendation of McCoy's Root Beer. It is THE BEST. I think it's the added birch bark that makes it so delicious!
Dinner by Kansas City Int'l Airport (MCI)?
IXTAPA has great mexican and is right off of I-35 and Barry Road (across from Zona Rosa). I also enjoy the Malay Cafe, which is off of Barry Road, east of I-35 in a strip mall with a Pier 1...
Kansas City
I don't eat pork or beef either, but am a huge fan of KC BBQ. Despite what everyone else seems to be saying, you don't have to skip BBQ in this town if you're not digging in to a cow or a pig!!
I love the turkey sandwich at Arthur Bryant's, they also have a 1/2 chicken that is juicy and delicious. Oklahoma Joe's sometimes has a soft shell crab sandwich on Fridays which is AMAZING, as well as a Smoked Chicken Gumbo everyday which is one of my absolute favorites. You can't go wrong with the "Lean and Mean" sandwich there either - an openfaced turkey sandwich topped with their spicy cole slaw!!
I am not a fan of Jack Stack, so I won't comment on it, but I do want to say that it is possible to have good BBQ here in KC on the diet you've described!
Let us know what you try!
What are your least favorite Thanksgiving recipes??
What an array of dislikes....this has been a delightful read!
Thank you all!
What are your least favorite Thanksgiving recipes??
This really has to take the cake. Just HEARING about it made my stomach turn!!
Wow!
What are your least favorite Thanksgiving recipes??
I need a little help here...hope you Chowhounders can give me some!!
I need to put together a piece on Thanksgiving food (Hannukah food, Easter food, Christmas food, Family Holiday foods all apply here) that is traditional to your family, but maybe a little off. A little weird. A little unappetizing. I've talked to lots of folks and all I'm coming up with so far is jello. Jello salads. Lots and lots of jello salads. I know there has to be more out there than this!!!
Help, please!!
Thanks so much!!
Weston, MO
thank you! i had heard good things about the Vineyards, but the menu looked a little meat-heavy and i'm more of a fish eater, so i wasn't sure if i would enjoy it as much as my husband, the carnivore.
with these recommendations i think we should probably eat both lunch AND dinner in weston. and maybe snag a caramel apple for walking around.
thanks!
Weston, MO
We're headed up to Weston, Missouri this weekend for the Apple Festival. I haven't been to Weston in 4 years and was wondering if anyone had a great recommendation for dinner in the area!
Best selection of cookie cutters in Kansas City?
Pryde's is definitely the place to go. They have a whole wall of cookie cutters in the upper level.
Good eats in Lawrence, KS?
If you eat at La Familia be sure to try their sweet salsa, which I make a 45-minute drive for at least once a month. Also, the mushroom empanadas are excellent.
KC brunch
I've sworn off the pasta trio at Lidia's. When they first opened, it was the best part of the whole experience, but as time has gone on, it's become pretty uninspiring. On Sundays, though, they do their "Sunday sauces," which you can also order at brunch - and those are amazing.
I usually get the Frico with the crab...but I have a soft spot for crunchy Parmesan cheese.
KC brunch
I know that they can be rather hit & miss for dinner, but my favorite brunch in KC is at Lidia's, where you can enjoy all the foods you'd overspend on at dinner for only $19.50. They have some excellent salads on the Antipasti table...
