Arepas - Does anyone sell fresh/frozen ones?

Is there a Dominican variety? I think I had one at a baseball game from what you all are describing.

Here's a link to my flickr if anyone can tell me what it is, I didn't write it down at the time.

David's (Jewish food), SF off Union Square - any good?

is there something about max's or miller's that i don't know about? that's a pretty harsh indictment of either establishment...

another great Burmese meal

my handle is kitchenstink and I approve of this message.

Quince or Michael Mina

I second the sentiment around Quince. Mina churns out staff on the regular, while quince has a different reputation to their staff, both establishments focus heavily on technique, but Mina is more about show, display, trios, etc. Quince, the perception is that they have a different standard of quality more love and care whereas Mina bullies people into shape. The pasta courses are legendary at Quince.

Dim sum & bbq buffet @ Dick Lee Pastry, Chinatown SF - all u can eat $5.99

It's not your sit down type of place that is full service, it's more a casual pick what you want from a counter type place with old timers sitting around sipping tea. It's more about volume than service or quality, it is obviously a buffet. I personally have never eaten there, preferring You's dim sum on Stockton, (depending on the item) for casual to go, but for sit down I usually go to Gold Mountain.

Moonstar buffet offers all you can eat dim sum for a heftier price, quality is kinda meh, but I'm a dim sum snob.

David's (Jewish food), SF off Union Square - any good?

I've always been turned off by the ridiculously high prices. When craving corned beef and pastrami, I'd rather go to Max's (nearby) or Miller's East Coast West on Polk and Clay.

Low salt, low fat, low cholesterol, low everything but taste...Chinese?

Lucky Creation hasn't been as good as it once was...Many of the best/tastiest things on the menu are deep fried and overglazed with syrupy sauces. It used to be my favorite veggie food, but not so much anymore. Golden Era Vietnamese on O Farell or Golden Lotus in Oakland are the consensus best though not Chinese.

I second the Bodega Bistro comment, salt and oil is much more controlled. Chef is Chinese though it's vietnamese food.

...low salt...low fat...that's really hard considering cantonese people love salt fish and salted duck eggs and roast duck...

Capital on Clay Street sometimes has lighter options, and if you speak Chinese (or even if you don't) they're pretty accomodating.

Best places to eat in downtown San Mateo

Thanks for the input, I had a great time at Espetus in the city, great idea to open in SM. Any types of places like Nopa, Range, Firefly?

Best places to eat in downtown San Mateo

What about Lure? I've heard good things about that place.

Kingfish used to be something else, I think the predecessor had spent a lot of money redoing the building.

Perhaps I'm used to San Francisco restaurants, but most of the mentions of non Asian places all seem like they are passable.

best brunch in SF

i second that. who knew chicken hash would be so good.

Best places to eat in downtown San Mateo

Thanks, that's kind of disappointing since the only thing that's been added to the area is Gator's. Everything else is a holdover from over 10 years ago. I'm wondering why that is.

Where to purchase fresh lamb in SF proper?

Bryan's on California in the Laurel District had some good lamb last I looked.

Ethnic restaurants near the Embarcadero section?

If you're staying at the Embarcadero it's a high rent area so you won't be able to access mom and pop types of places. There is a vietnamese pho chain located in the embarcadero center called pho hoa. Go to the Ferry Building and you'll find Out the Door, along with Slanted Door (you'll need reservations), but otherwise you won't find good bargain type of places. From that position you can walk or take the bus to Chinatown, the mission, the Richmond, or anywhere else that has great ethnic food.

Pig Roast

I'm headed to a pigroast in the mission in a few weeks. Check around. Have you tried checking with catering rental companies? Start with Classic and maybe someone might be able to help..http://sanfrancisco.classicpartyrentals.com/products/cooking_equipment

Best food neighborhood in San Francisco?

Best walk to see what's happening: Valencia from 14th all the way to 22nd. Start at Paulines or Little Star, walk around 16th, there's Monk's Kettle, Ti Couz, Arinelli's, Limon, or Ramblas (many others)...There's tons of places tucked away on the side streets. 19th Street has the James Beard award winning Delfina, Delfina Pizzeria, and any meal should be topped off with Bi-Rite ice creamery, known for it's lavendar ice cream and it's salted caramel.

Union Square has a few interesting places and can be covered in a day and you can throw in the Westfield (though hardly any of the food is worth eating with the exception of out the door), then take any of the buses, streetcars, or BART to the ferry building and grab a burger at Taylor's Refresher.

Have fun!

Best places to eat in downtown San Mateo

For those of you that live in San Mateo or like to hangout in the downtown area, I'd like to get recommendations on the best places to eat, from expensive special occasion type places, cheap eats, or casual dinners with friends.

I used to live and work in downtown San Mateo but it's been a long time. Are there great places like in San Francisco?
