Live Oak Barbecue in East Austin

Gave them a 2nd shot on Wednesday with much better results. The brisket was tender and moist, slightly lacking on the smoke flavor. Sausage was as described previously. They were out of ribs so they gave me some pork steak on the house, which I loved. The coleslaw, however, was not to my liking. The service was much better than last time, they even offered pickles, onions, and bread.

They did have pickles and onions, no crackers though.

Live Oak Barbecue in East Austin

I ate there for lunch a couple of weeks ago:

Ribs- flat out bad. Extremely dry and almost no meat on the bone.

Brisket- a little dry and slightly tough but overall pretty good. would eat again.

Sausage- excellent. It reminds me of Luling City Market sausage in its
consistency, not quite as much flavor though. This was definitely the standout of the meats I tried.

Potato Salad- very heavy on the boiled eggs and mayo, little bit of celery in there as well. It was kind of like eating egg salad with potato thrown in.

The 2 guys working there could not have been less friendly. It seemed to pain them to get food for me, and you would have thought I insulted them when I asked for pickles, onions, and bread. I also found the lack of trays to be inconvenient. Also, I ordered tea and they had no ice available.

Overall not the best experience but I'll give them another shot.

What happened to Amaya's?!?

that's a relief, thanks.

What happened to Amaya's?!?

Went out of town for 2 weeks. Returned yesterday and went to get my Tex-mex fix and Amaya's Taco Village isn't there anymore? There was another Mexican restaurant there...can't remember the name because I was in shock at the time. What gives?

Franklin's Update

I took a look at the inside this weekend, still a lot of work to be done. March 8 seems like an optimistic date, hope it happens though.

He said they plan on adding a beer garden at some point.

"a minimal amount of cheese in the enchilada"

Surely you can't be talking about the same place. There is an artery clogging amount of cheese.

Barley Swine: Brick and Mortar Restaurant From The Man Behind Odd Duck

A buddy and I were at the Horseshoe on Saturday and decided to stop by and have a beer at Barleyswine since they have a good selection. We made it clear as soon as we walked in that we only wanted to have a drink and would be leaving. The waitress was visibly upset that we weren't ordering food and when I gave her a $20 for our $11 tab she didn't bring back any change. I had to ask for change and she blamed it on the bartender...maybe it was her fault but I doubt it. The manager did come over and compliment us on our beer choices so that made me feel a little bit better about things.

Chilaquiles

I've had chilaquiles at Curra's and thought they were good. However that's the only time I've had them so I can't really say how they compare to other places.

Still haven't been. Some friends said the food is very good but the portions are tiny. That's the extent of my knowledge.

FYI, grand opening was last night.

Hard Hat Report Vol 7

We tried it out last week for dinner and I agree with the previous review. The food was decent but overpriced. I had the french dip with mac n cheese and borracho beans. The mac n cheese was relatively flavorless and the beans tasted like a can of ranch style beans. The margarita I had was excellent though. They have a huge outdoor seating area that's quite nice. I'm hopeful they can pull it all together.

Hard Hat Report Vol 7

Zed's is having their grand opening today in N. Austin. Just south of the HEB at Parmer and I35, next to the JC Penney store. The building looks quite nice from the outside. I'm curious to try this place...hopefully it will be good because I live about 5 minutes away.

BBQ in Austin better than Lockhart?

from what I understand, it's more about lmited space on the smoker than bad business sense.

Good Italian, south or central?

I ate there last Friday night for the first time and was not impressed. The service was terrible. Our waiter paid a lot of attention to the couple at the next table (who appeared to be regulars), and zero attention to us. We waited a good 25 minutes after finishing our meal before we received the check. The food wasn't bad, but was very overpriced for the quality. An $18 plate of linguini should knock my socks off, and it just didn't. I don't plan on going back.

Restaurant.com Opinions?

If you wait they usually have 80% off about once a month. I stocked up on them back in January and haven't had any trouble using the coupons...I think I've used 4 so far this year.

Good food on the waaay east side?

Thanks, I'll give Mr Catfish a try.

I've seen the school bus parked there a few times...what do you like at Old School BBQ?

Good food on the waaay east side?

Definitely familiar with El Rico. There's a relatively new taco stand at the gas station/liquor store on 969 just west of the TDCJ facility that I need to try.

Tex-Mex on Austin’s Southeast and East Sides, Part 12

Went to El Rico today for lunch. Had pastor, pollo, and barbacoa. The barbacoa was delicious and very moist, pastor was passable not the best I've ever had, pollo was average. The tortillas were very fresh and delicious.

That new Brazilian place on Pleasant Valley is showing the games and they're BYOB until they get their liquor license.

been meaning to try Arkies.

Good food on the waaay east side?

I work out near Decker and 969. Are there any decent lunch places around these parts? I've been a regular at Willies BBQ and Dan's on Airport. Otherwise I haven't found anything particularly inspiring. How is that Terry's seafood place at Airport and MLK? Any good Taco Carts? Please help me find a new lunch spot!

1063 Lıcensed Food Traılers ın Austın and I Ate at Each One

Finally tried this place on Saturday. Hands down the best brisket I've had in Austin...I'd put it up there with any of the Lockhart 3. Opted for the moist brisket and it was melt in your mouth tender with a nice bark on it. The ribs were also very good but almost too much black pepper for me. The sausage was ok, nothing special IMO. I tried the sweet sauce and the espresso sauce and preferred the espresso, the sweet one was too sweet for me. Ordered by the pound and it came with the standard pickles, onions, and white bread.

The prices were a little high, brisket was $13/lb. He said he had recently increased the prices...and as long as he's doing a good business I imagine they will continue to go up. There were only 4 or 5 people ahead of us in line but with only one person cutting meat that equated to a 20 minute wait. With a little hired help the line would be much quicker.

Austin Burger Smackdown!

huh, weird. I drove thru around 6:45 and there was a sign saying the dining room was closed. maintenance maybe.

R I P part II

FYI, this was confirmed by the owner. End of March the lease is up and they won't be renewing.

I noticed this weekend that only the drive thru is open at Hat Creek on Burnet, dining room is closed. Anyone have any idea why?

That's what the waitress told me yesterday when I ate there. Said she's opening up a daycare in Lockhart and the restaurant will be closing in March. i believe she is the daughter of the owners. Hopefully she was incorrect.
