Mica Chestnut Hill
We went to Mica last Sunday evening as a foursome, and were happy that it is still a BYOB. I am more of a foodie that a wine connoisseur. All of us thought that the decor was somewhat lacking in accordance with the prices, but it wasn't horrible. I went to Cuba only once and thought it was quaint. This just didn't have that same kind of appeal. Also, the atmosphere was a little claustrophobic, but mainly due to the overabundance of waitstaff. The service was impeccable, but didn't necessitate the extra room they took up in the tiny and noise-worthy dining room. We were seated at once upon our arrival and stayed about 1 1/2 hours.
The menu itself was interesting, as it named the staff on one page and the menu items on the other. I thought that rather refreshing. Everything was mentioned in plain English with simple terminology. No one had to explain anything and take up ten minutes of our time (and theirs). I was very pleased by this.
When we were seated we were asked if we wanted "fizzy" or regular water, complimentary. Yay! No use of the word "tap."
The food happened to have been excellent. Yes, the portions were tiny, but were full of robust flavors and rich enough to satisfy. The plates were not overly decorated which was a surprise. That's something I like to see as it adds to the dish.
I am a pescatarian, and didn't want meat or poultry. Some places frown upon that, but not Mica. I felt the menu (we all received the 4 course meal) was rich in diversity, at least for my needs. The scallops were luscious and the others at my table raved about the lamb and duck, although said the lamb portion was too little.
The head waiter, French accent and all, came to inquire about our meal. In particular, he asked how my halibut was cooked. I said it was done nicely. He then commented that everyone else thought it was overcooked that evening. Strange. Very strange. Not sure that was necessary!
Get the chocolate for dessert. It was outstanding. I'd go back again, maybe for a special occasion, but hope they pare down the waitstaff and rev up the decor.

Any word on when they will receive liquor license? Also, I am a non-meat eater. Are there choices for me (no poultry, either)?
Cedarbrook/Jenkintown/Glenside Restaurants?
Two new Italian restaurants have opened in the area and both are decent. The first is in The Towers condos at Limekiln Pike and the entrance to Rte. 309. It's called Primo Bacio. The 2nd is at the Jenkintown train station - Mio Pomodoro. Both places have decent food and lively decor. Mio Pomodoro's food is very different. It's eclectic and when you order things off of the menu they might be presented in a pleasantly surprising way.
Dinner near Mt. Vernon Square
Great suggestions! I am always up for trying new veggie places, so maybe we can split up one night if she doesn't want to go to Vegetate.
Dinner near Mt. Vernon Square
I am looking for some suggestions of a couple of a reasonable restaurants for dinner within walking distance of Mt. Vernon Square.
This is a toughie: I will be dining out with a co-worker who is used to fried chicken and hamburgers at fast food chains ( ugh!) but I am a non-meat / non- poultry eater (love fish and seafood) who eats just about every type of cuisine and is adventurous. Mexican, Italian, Asian are best bets, I suppose.
Is there a place we can agree upon? We are there for three nights - one of which can be a little pricier. I'm not fond of cafeterias - I like to be served after a hard-day's work at the convention center!
A short taxi ride isn't out of the question...
Thanks, in advance!
Dessert place in Huntingdon Valley
Need a place to have some coffee and dessert near H.V.
Having dinner at one of my favorite places - Blue Sage - but want to go somewhere cozy and comfy afterwards to hang out for a while.
Any suggestions? I'd like to stay within the area.
Please do NOT suggest Starbucks, etc.!!!
Thanks!!!
Park City Restaurants
Looking for a good place for dinner (not a chain, not too expensive) with non-American food NOT near the crowds. Someone recommended Ticino Trattoria. Any other suggestions? Thanks!!!
BYOBs in Center City
Thanks for the suggestions! Just a note...Effies is not open on Monday.
Can't wait to try them all!!!
Glenside, PA
They are expensive and the service is soooooo slow, Maybe that's why there aren't any reviews.
Glenside, PA
If you're interested in a good, homemade breakfast (or any other casual meal) the Trolley Car Diner has some very good choices. It is on Germantown Pike - about 10 minutes from Glenside. They just put in a small deli.
BYOBs in Center City
I am looking for some good BYOBs near the Kimmel Center. I have tickets to the Speaker Series on Monday nights, so it can be a bit of a challenge.
I've tried (and loved) La Viola, but need some other choices.
THANKS!!!
Inexpensive Dinner for a Group in Westwood / Brentwood
I'll definitely look into these places. They sound like fun.
Thanks for the help!
What food is good at the Phillies game?
There is nothing, Harry The K's serves warmed-up fried appetizers and not much else. I am actually a vegetarian, and get the veggie hotdogs or burgers in section 131 (?). I hear the Bull's BBQ isn't that bad - maybe worth a try. Other than that, do what we do. Go to a good Italian restaurant for dinner in South Philly and just have some ice-cream at the stadium! If it's a day game, pick up a hoagie at Lee's (or anywhere else) and enjoy it at your seat.
GO PHILS!!!
Inexpensive Dinner for a Group in Westwood / Brentwood
Looking for a good (cuisine doesn't matter - just someplace fun!) relatively inexpensive restaurant for a "goodbye" party in the surrounding area. This will be in about two weeks, so the sooner the better.
Any suggestions would be helpful...
THANKS!
nice dinner near Willow Grove area
Hi,
The Kitchen bar (formerly Alexanders) is a very popular restaurant in the area. It has been newly renovated and the decor is pretty nice. The food is decent, and they have a nice big selection. Also, they have outdoor seating now. If the weather is nice, give it a try. It is about 15 minutes from your hotel.
Horizons for All
I used to go to Horizons all the time when it was located in Willow Grove. Everything I ever had was delicious. I haven't been to the new location yet, but miss it a lot!!!
Good Meal for a group in Baltimore
Hi,
I am looking for a good place (not a chain, preferably) for a group of 30 to eat in Baltimore.
Moderately priced is better.
Not looking for a steak house or Asian, more like Continental or Italian, or maybe Mexican.
Any suggestions?
BYO (or not) for Anniversary Dinner - Northern Burbs or elsewhere
You are not too far from the Jenkintown area. The newly renovated Kitchen Bar (formerly Alexanders) on Old York Road has a fun, New York feel. The menu is huge and the food is great. They are not a BYOB but it's fun. How about Thai food? There are two great spots (Thai Thanee in Abington and White Elephant in Huntingdon Valley). Both are BYOB and great food.
Philly Chinatown for a vegetarian and Peking Duck lover
Hi,
I am looking for a restaurant in Chinatown area which serves a great Peking Duck but also has some vegetarian/fish alternatives for a crazy group of eight!
Thanks in advance...
Any good restaurants near JFK Airport?
Help! I am leaving this evening to pick someone up.
I need a decent restaurant for two (love all ethnic cuisines) not too pricy but with really good food.
Anything within a 20 - 30 minute range of the airport would be great.
Any suggestions?
