Driving Baltimore to NYC tonight-- looking for a casual but delicious place on the way

Driving Baltimore to NYC tonight-- looking for a casual but delicious place on the way, perhaps out of philly or off the nj turnpike? Old thread search posted only diners and chains?

Fun place for a casual business dinner---good food, fun environment, close to downtown.

Looking for casual good food in a fun environment, not too expensive, $30 pp is ok. Relatively simple food this time around given the participants. My faves are henningers, pazo, peters inn, joy american, chameleon and mari luna. Not a fan of mezze. Wanting something new-- and close to downtown. Tried Louisiana? Timothy Dean? Am I overlooking anything?

Mari Luna

i went the other day and enjoyed my meal. i think the hanger/skirt steak dishes are wonderful-- for $12 you can get a generous portion of steak and grilled vegetables over rice and beans. The fried plantains are excellent and the soft shell tacos also tasty, filled with lean grilled meat. It's a BYOB, which is fun. The apps were good we had the sample platter. The chile relleno and tamales were fabulous and the roasted pepper salsa delicious.

South American beef

I am very interested in buying meat from Uruguay in bulk. Suggestions? Thanks.

Top five Baltimore area pizza places?

joes squared was incredible the first time I ordered it, delivered. The next 5 times were mediocre at best. They are so stingy with the toppings and the crust is oftentimes burnt on the edges. matthews is delicious but you must order a fresh pie. egyptians is tasty, too.

Morris is back

it was very quiet for a thursday night. there were 3 tables in total having dinner at 8pm.

we met morris and he seems like a lovely man. very full of life.

the ambience was exactly what we expected-- dimly lit and intimate... borderline grungy. I was there with a friend and she jested about holding hands... it is perhaps more appropriate for couples.

We asked for the waitress’s suggestion for a red wine and her knowledge was clearly very limited. She essentially told us that the 2 most expensive bottles were the most popular so we ordered a very reasonable bottle of pinot noir. It was not at all enjoyable, but given it was $20 we had low expectations.

we started with the pâté and the mussels. the pâté was nice but not remarkable. it was served with saltines but we also asked for bread. it was rich and the taste was good but the texture was not to my liking... i prefer smooth, but that is a personal preference only. the mussels were quite tasty served with a tomato cream sauce. they were large new zealand mussels (I tend to prefer smaller mussels) and the portion was not very generous (perhaps 8 to a plate as opposed to the 25 you would get in a bowl at henningers).

i had the bouillabaisse. the first few bites were truly wonderful—I was pleased with the presentation and the liberal chunks of seafood. Unfortunately, I think the fennel was a bit aggressive and what initially I found pleasantly aromatic a few minutes into the experience was overwhelmingly perfumed. I also think the broth was so hot that it overcooked the shrimp. my friend had lamb chops with a cream horseradish sauce. It was served with relatively tasteless vegetables (green beans, carrots, broccoli), which may have even been previously frozen. The texture and flavor of the lamb was very good.

Overall, given all I had read on various online venues I was disappointed with the meal. The entrees were $22 and $26 each and at that price point in Baltimore I expect to be wowed, or at least very pleased. For French influenced cuisine in Baltimore I would instead recommend Petit Louis or the Chameleon Café.

Rehoboth Chow

Went this past weekend to Rehoboth.

Cultured Pearl- nice space, very crowded on a Friday night. Wonderful sushi. Better than anything I've had in Baltimore outside of Sushi Sono in Columbia. We had various rolls, sushi and a tasty banana tempura dessert. With sake it was $100 for two of us.

Back Porch- Excellent Saturday lunch. We sat on the deck. I tried a goat cheese/tomato tart with a beautiful salad. Wine selection was also nice. My frieds had the scallops which were done very well in cornmeal over a red thai/noodle side.

Summer House- Read reviews on CH but was still hesitant because it looks like a bar. We were impressed and it's one of the few places open for lunch off-season. I had a huge salad with crisp fresh romaine, dried cranberries, candied pecans, goat cheese and a very generous portion of tuna (only $10!). The tuna was a perfect medium rare. My friends had the fish sandwich special which was again the tuna, two huge pieces, over homeade bread. The crabcake sandwich was good but they boast "no filler" which ended-up meaning "crab and mayo" hence it was too creamy and the crab flavor was a bit lost.

Next time we will try FishON and Big Fish Grill. Espuma looked a bit uptight for our lazy weekend and I've read mixed reviews about Eden recently.

Rehoboth Chow

going to Rehoboth tomorrow and I see mostly outdated posts so I'm searching for updated information.

looking for excellent food in a casual enviornment (not "fine dining).

my favorites in baltimore are henningers, pazo and peters inn.
