Any New Best Burgers In Stamford and Nearby Not a fast food place

If we told you it would not be a secret...

Regardless, I've been hitting Flipside in Fairfield lately. Burgers are good...fried on a griddle, fries are fresh-cut and excellent, very good shakes, cheap beer.

Corn Beef Hash - FFD County

It's a bit of a haul (about 40 minutes from New Canaan), but the Laurel Diner in Southbury makes THE best Corned Beef Hash I've ever had outside of NYC, and is well worth the drive if that is what you are looking for.

New Canaan Diner

We went Saturday AM, this time with the whole fam. Great b'fast...I had the Pancacke Trio, Mrs. Burgerlover had the Very Fresh Omellette and we are actually ecstatic that PRD is now right around the corner.

I agree with Elizzie, NC is EXTREMELY lucky to have this place.

New Canaan Diner

Went last night with the little man...menu, decor, food, and prices are indistinguishable from Post Road Diner. Which is a good thing, IMO. Nice addition to town, should do well.

New Canaan Diner

Any homage to NC Diner's from the past? Lou's, Elmcrest, Libby's, Paggy's? NC has a diner-rich history that goes back to at least the 1930's. It would be cool if they could incorporate something into the menu or at least have some pics up on the walls to reference these great places that no longer exist.

Filling Station in New Canaan - Anyone have the scoop?

Just my .02...know it's not gonna be popular here...I actually feel it's a little too hyped.

I like CSE, been goin for many many many years. The father of one of my elementary school buddies actually owned the place when it first opened, and I'm so happy John and Mary restored it to it's original pre-fire feel. I missed it when it was gone, and was one of the first folks to dine there when it returned.

But as much as I love the place, I'd never classify the burger as "great". Good? Yes. Best in NC? Absolutely no doubt about it. But to find a truly GREAT burger you gotta travel a bit...toward Westchester and beyond. Or pay $20+ at some other local places that do have really GREAT burgers. I'd put CSE in the same class as Rory's, Burger Bar, and Brennan's.

And for folks who have not been, best to temper your expectations a bit IMO, b/c you won't be walking into Melon's, Clarke's, Shake Shack, or Paul's...

Pipers Kilt....superb no more!

Hi there,

Agree 100%. What was once a burger destination has really slid over the past year or so. I've posted before on other threads about this. In the past I never cared about the horrid service because the burgers were so damn good, but (like you) 3 out of the past 4 burgers were mediocre, overcooked, or served with the wrong toppings. Now the focus moves to the waitstaff who are apathetic at best. I truly hope they can get things worked out and re-establish themselves. 'Til then I'm stickin with my go-to's in Greenwich, Westport, and Fairfield.

Jfood hits Rawley's (Fairfield, CT) - Not Bad

I don't dare...plus, with a good option such as Rawley's in the vicinity it's no biggie.

Jfood hits Rawley's (Fairfield, CT) - Not Bad

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Jfood. No, I like SDW better than just about any dog place in the area...the New Englander and the Chicagoan are my go-to's and the fries cannot be topped. Rawley's is a good change-of-pace, especially when I'm not up as far as Black Rock. Also, my little guy does not like his dog split...just a touch of the old man's OCD at age four...so if he is in tow, we will hit Rawley's.

Gotta get the special house hot sauce next time the opp presents itself.

Jfood hits Coalhouse Pizza (Stamford) - Very good pie, great potential

Hi there, agree wholeheartedly. Have been 4 times since it opened, getting better each time. Try the Kicker next time.

Also should mention the salads are really good too, still undecided about their wings.

Moving to Ridgefield, CT

I'd like to add my recommendation for The Little Pub in Branchville. Awesome food, friendly service, really great atmosphere. Not expensive.

Best bagels in Tristate area?

Stumbled upon a great site for Westchester/CT foodies while Googling Hand-Rolled Bagels in Rye (which I revisted last weekend and absolutely LOVED).

Good Bagels in White Plains

10 minutes from White Plains is Bagel Power in Scarsdale.

15 minutes from White Plains is H&R Bialy (Quaker Ridge) in New Rochelle.

Both are fantastic, worth the side trip.

New to Fairfield, CT from Manhattan - your favorite restaurants?

Have to agree with you on that, though I do like the Works Dog at Rawley's...bacon, mustard, relish, & kraut. They also do a great hot sauce.

Milkshakes are better at Rawley's. Fries better at SDW.

Jfood, you MUST TRY Julian's in Westport. It is fantastic. Their regular pie is great, and you would love their take on Clams Casino.

Also curious to hear your opinion on Coalhouse in Stamford.

I've always maintained that Rocco's pizzettes are very good. I think there is a stigma (albeit unfair) because the owners also own Planet Pizza (pretty bad).

Which one did you try?

Coalhouse Pizza - Stamford

Good pizza, just tried "The Kicker" (essentially a Margherita pie with "hot oil" and sliced poblanos). Very tasty, but like most other thin-crust joints, it did not travel well at all so my advice would be to definitely eat-in.

Agree wholeheartedly. Gates has very good sandwiches and Joe's Pizza is upper-tier in the entire area. So glad you mentioned Lorenzo's roasted peppers, and in addition to the great pizza, the wings are phenomenal...about 5 different styles from which to choose (house hot, BBQ, Traditional Buffalo, Sweet & Sour, Sesame Garlic). They also have gluten-free entrees, and to top it off, they now deliver!!!!

All good suggestions, also should mention Gates...something of a New Canaan icon (just like Jfood). The food is OK (try the Belaggio sandwich or the Chop Chop Chicken salad), decent scene at the bar, solid brunch. Service there can be hit or miss, prices reasonable (on par with Rocco's).

And best of all, it's right down the street from Gelatissimo.

Aloi, Thali, Cherrystreet, Gates...should I go on? Are you new to New Canaan?

I do like Rocco's for what it is, good pizzette, yummy crostini, nice setting, good service, nice place to take the fam, & won't break the bank.

Probably not a good idea to ask folks to accept it for what it is though, esp. on this site.

Adamclyde, skip Pepe's altogether and give Julian's in Westport a shot, especially if you're going for a non-white clam.

Is there any good pizza in Stamford?

Hi Moron, I definitely agree that Pepe's is overhyped. I do like Remo's more than Tombstone, particularly the Neapolitan-style, but what do I know? Been a while since I've had the former.

Not sure where you're located, but for good CT pizza, there's a little hole-in-the-wall place just off Exit 17 in Westport called Julian's. Great brick oven pies. Kicks the holy hell out of Pepe's.
