Jersey-Q found a permanent home

I'm very sad to say this, but the Jersey-Q is no more. I drove by & there was a "for rent" sign on it. I called the phone number and that number has been assigned to a real estate office. Sad, indeed..I too really was enjoying that place when I would get to that part of the world!
I hope that they go back to the gas station routine and that someone here reports the location as I am from Philly and don't get around that area other than #322!!!

Tall order: 1st time ever in USA, what do I HAVE to taste?

OOPS! Sorry about the old information but Monte's was great anytime I went there, and it sure did not seem like several years!!.....there must be other places within an easy distance to where they're going to be, in case they're unable to get down to south beach...

Tall order: 1st time ever in USA, what do I HAVE to taste?

sorry, coming in late on this thread...I noticed the Joe's reccomendation, and I heartily endorse it. However should you not be able to get down to south beach, there is a place in Boca called "Monte's" who also serves a really good stone crap. They're also a little less dear in the $$$ department. I don't know where you are coming from, but if Sushi is not popular where you are from, there are many great Sushi places. Also.. Cuban food is a MUST! At least a Cubano sandwitch and a cup of cuban coffee. Have a great time in our country. eat, see, enjoy and have fun!!

it's time for the crappy pots to go

Now to add my 2 cents to an already elongated thread, and to allow the inner geek in me to come out.

When buying at the box stores as well as the discounters, you REALLY need to know your stuff. For instance: Calphalon (my personal fav, really happy with it both Teflon & traditional!) is manufactured in 3 places. Toledo Ohio, Argentina & China. The quality is about in that order as well and the origin is clearly marked on the bottom. Should you decide to pick a brand, vs individual pieces, you should get to know it. Sometimes the cheaper stuff is made to be cheaper. However, I have gotten Toledo Pieces at TJ Maxx at fantastic prices, they may have some outside scratches, but as long as the cooking surface is allright, who cares!!. I have also scored Toledo pans at Bed, Bath & Beyond.. for great prices.

This may not be the case with All Clad, but I'm sure that there are plenty of other major brands that do the Calphalon thing...

Good luck in your adventure, and I hope that we've not over complicated what should be a fun thing!!

Jimmy's BBQ in Malvern/Frazer?

Riding along Rt 30 in Malvern and the pungent smell of hickory and cherry wood came wafting into the car. I was seduced!! So..this afternoon my son & I stopped into Jimmys for some take out. I was early for lunch so there was no crowd. Jimmy was there and promptly introduced himself, what a super guy!! He and I chatted a bit and I was inquisitive about his smoking equipment, which appeared to be the same equipment that one of my favorite BBQs in central Florida uses. It was the same. Even better than Jimmy, was our take out orders. A pulled pork and a brisket sandwich, baked beans, mac & cheese as well as coleslaw & BBQ sauce. I was tormented by the aroma from the bag in the back seat the whole way home, and I do have to admit it was tough showing restraint! Finally home. All was packed in such a way that nothing had to be re-warmed. The brisket was tender and moist and needed no BBQ sauce, but I had to try it. Man, that is some good sauce!! Tasted of molasses and what appeared to be almost a pruney taste.. it is just magnificent. The baked beans were like no other which I had tasted in the past. They really tasted smoked. How'd he do that? (without the beans falling through the grates, lol!!). My wife is the Mac & cheese expert and she gave a big smile & a nod of approval. I liked the Cole slaw, it is southern style and goes very well as a sandwich condiment as well as just eating with a fork. The pulled pork was absolutely as I am used to in the better Florida BBQ places, smoky, tender and just great. I look forward to the next visit which will be an eat in.. and I'm gonna try the ribs, greens, etc. I obviously recommend this place very highly! Eat & enjoy!

Best Lox on the Main Line??

I third (or whatever) Hymie's & Murray's. Don't forget to get some of the amazing chopped herring salad as well as the creme cheese with scallions. I know you can mix that up yourself, but there's something about it coming out of the plastic container. Also.. sometimes they have "bialys" if they do.. get 'em!!! And as far as Michaels in KOP.. it's good.. but in the opinion of this scrivener, not as good as the other two!!

Dinner in the Main Line Area

I'd like to second Lourdas! The chef is the owner and she really cares about what goes out the door. The Pacticcio is the best we have ever had. Her son is the Maitre'd and he's really pleasant. It's BYO and cash only. I do not find the prices too high or offensive. The only down side is that it can get pretty noisy when there is a full house. eat & enjoy!

Kosher style delis anywhere near the Lehigh Valley???

A dear close friend who is originally a New Yorker who lived here in The Philly area and then moved to the LV about 20 years ago. He's a "deli kind of guy". I'll try to ask him for input. If he has any I will post it for you!

Kosher style delis anywhere near the Lehigh Valley???

Sorry to hear this. As I mentioned, I've not spent that much time there in recent years. Also, as I said..If you feel like a Sunday morning Schlep...about an hour.. in Merion Pa there's Hymie's and Murray's Deli. If you want to make it a little day trip, go into Philly and the Famous Deli is around 4th and Bainbridge, near South St. The food is amazing. the platters are HUGE and it's not too far from the Italian Market. I'd suggest you take a walk after your deli platters, but you will be so very stuffed that you will roll.....eat and enjoy!

Kosher style delis anywhere near the Lehigh Valley???

Is the 7th Street Deli on 7th st. in Allentown still around? It's what you want, but I've not spent any measureable time up in the LV in quite a while! If it is, your stuffed Kishka awaits you !!

WAIT.. I just did a search and came up with this:
http://allentowngoodnews.blogspot.com...

Worst case, the Lower Main Line is about an hour away from the Allentown exit of the PA turnpike. We have delis...and Dr. Browns!!

Royal India in Malvern tonight for Dinner!

I wrote this for Yelp! but I figured I'd share it here as well....
Tonight.. all of the rules of the past changed. I love good Indian food. Wife does not. Our dinner visits for Indian occur about every 8 months, clearly a concession to me. Until tonight. I had heard that Royal India in Malvern had some great food on another board, and had passed by it a million times, as my Baseball playing son frequents the batting cages almost next door. Tonight.. we ate.. and ate.. and ate. Wife smiled!! She liked it!! I LOVED IT!!

We had a SUPERB meal! We shared a Chicken Samosa as an appetizer. It was not greasy, not dry..it was PERFECT. The pappadums were crisp and tasty, too! As a main course, I had the Royal India Mixed grill. It was tandoorlicious!! tandoori chicken, seekh kabob, fish and shrimp, chicken tikka kabob, boti kabob, cooked in a clay oven and served on sizzling platter.. My wife had Mango chicken,Boneless cubes of chicken cooked in mango sauce with mild seasoning and a touch of scallion and ginger, and consumed every last drop of it, that's very unusual for her. We also shared some Palak paneer, extra spicy. It was.. I loved it, spice isn't her thing..the garlic naan was outrageous. We had the pleasure of getting to know the boss a bit....Singh...a really nice guy who sat down and chatted with us...Oh yes, and I also had a cup of Masala Tea..it was complex, and the best that I had ever had.. I asked Singh about it and he started rattleing off the spices that they use.. I lost track..We finished off our meal with some (don't laugh!) sweet balls of something..they had cheese and other things.. but they were great, sorta like donut holes saturated with a sweet sauce. I do not recall what they were called but the taste was quite memorable.. The decor is not what you go to this place for, but it was extremely clean. I have heard (and it i has been opined on this board) that the lunch buffet is exceptional. Sadly it is nowhere near where I live or work, so that will have to be experienced with some planning. It is also worthy to note that the food prices were, in my opinion, very reasonable. A lot better than most of the suburban Indian places which we've gone to..the food was miles better..

BUT.. the best part of the evening was leaving, and having my wife say how great it was and that she looks forward to our return! I have been somewhat Indian food deprived for the last 24 years.. but NOT ANYMORE!!

Hey FriedClamFanatic! I go through Lumberton quite frequently on my drives to Florida & back, as a matter of fact, it is one of my my Carolina BBQ sandwich stops! Can I ask what the place that sells the Irish bacon is down there?? I'd love to get some on my next journey!!

Need to find another BYOB a bit away from the Ardmore area, Please help!

Thanks for the reply, storm! We ended up at Lourdes Taverna in Bryn Mawr. This was closer to home than what we had hoped for, but it was superb, as it always is and we didn't run into any people that we knew, and that was the goal here...We will get to your 2 suggestions eventually!

Philly steak meat

If you want to make them at home and don't feel like preparing the meat yourself, you can buy a pretty good quality frozen shaved steak called "Steak-ums" . Naturally, preparing the meat yourself is better, but it's an awful lot of work. Once you add your fried onion & cheese whiz..(and I like pizza sauce too)..It will be pretty much a draw as far as the meat is concerned.

What is Pittsburgh's Signature Dish?

We ALL forgot one of the 'Burgh's most famous creations!!! THE KLONDIKE BAR!! Originated at Isaly's in the 'Burgh, but they sold out about 20ish years ago. But..they're still pretty darn good! So, that is the dessert for your party!! Oh yes, and have lots of Heintz 57 Ketchup on hand. Pittsburgh made, same as it always was. GO STILLERS!

Del Frescos Steak House - I went last Thursday

I'm sorry to hear of your dislike, we've been to CHOPS at least 50 times over the years. Have never had a problem, only great steak and friendly service. Didn't even realize that they offer wasabe mashed potatos,it's not something that we'd normally order. Try the lyonnaise potatos ot the spinach next time you go.

WOW!! Thanks for the "heads up"!! Not my kind of place, either..You just saved me from a potentially not excellent evening next week, also probably a few extra $$ !! I'm re-routing my reservation to Chops. It's always good and I like it there.

Need to find another BYOB a bit away from the Ardmore area, Please help!

Going out this weekend with some folks from the area. We need to get out of the 'hood for some privacy, though! Prefer a BYOB. Alba can't take us for a weekend reservation (surprise!) and I would really appreciate any suggestions of places NOT in the immediate area of Wynnewood, etc. The guests would prefer "American or Italian types", not real ethnic like Indian, Ethiopian, etc. you get the idea...any and all help and advice is surely appreciated!

for me it would have to be a Skyline 5 way or a few Coneys. I don't live near any Skylines so it's a big treat. I also love a double double from In & Out but once again, I am an east coaster, so it also means that I am on Vacation!! Occasionally I also like a big messy cheese Whopper from BK

Japanese Cheesesteaks around 11th & Sansom

I know that this is ancient history (10+ years ago), but does anyone remember that little place on what I believe was the 11th block of sansom, that used to serve the sukiyaki cheesesteaks, it was run by an older Japanese couple?? The cheesesteaks were absolutely superb. It seems that they retired and sold it to another couple, but the other couple could not make a successful go of it. My question...Is there anywhere in Philly where they still make these?? I can still taste them, I have been jonesing for one, and though I have tried to re-create them, I have not been successful at it.

Costco Smoked Salmon?

Last time I checked in Philly PA Costco, there was only the one variety of the Costco branded salmon. As one who has grown up with smoked salmon and has enjoyed it my whole life (I'm 53) I can tell you that IMHO the Costco variety is perhaps one of the very best pre-packaged, machine sliced smoked salmon that I have ever had! It is my understanding that it is caught & processed in Norway, and it has the nice oily texture of Norwegan smoked salmon. Which leads me to the thing that I like best about it.. you can actually taste the smoked part! In your case, with pumpernickel, onions & capers, I think this is the choice that works best.
If, in fact the other variety is an "Atlantic" salmon, some brands are much better than others. Lasco, Acme & Vita are good. You need to check the label to see if it is domestic or Chilean. Domestic tends to be more flavorful, but the Atlantic salmon is more subdued than the Norwegan variety.
Now.. though the pre-sliced is great, it is not as good as hand sliced deli smoked salmon. The problem here is economics, as the hand sliced variety is about 3 times the price, not great for the budget....so, you be the judge!!!
eat, enjoy & have a great new year!

Restaurant Recommendations for Lebanon/Hershey PA

Though it has been many years.. there was a great place in, I believe it was Mount Joy, called "Groff's Farm" . I have no idea if it is still around, but I can tell you that when we had our professional meetings up at the Hershey hotel, I would gather good friends and head to Groff's. It was very un-Lancaster County-like and the owner (Mrs.Groff) was always in the kitchen. Once again, it may be gone by now, but it was very consistent for the many years that we frequented that area! Perhaps one of the Lancaster County hounds could confirm it's current state...would be appreciated!!

How's the Primadonna in Mc Kees Rocks?

I will be finding myself in the 'Burgh in mid-January for a few days. Though I've spent lots of time there (and eaten my way through the city), I have never been to the Primadonna. Coyote Crossing in WC

Thanks for setting me straight on that geography. As far as being pedantic, I would not worry as I assume that we are all friends here!!! I agree that it is a bit pricey for Mexican, but I have yet to have a crummy meal or experience there. One of the nicest spring-early summer dining experiences is that patio. We love it and it is great if you are with another or two couples. Have a great holiday. Eat & Enjoy!!
