Peanut Butter -- how do you eat it (and on what kinds of different foods)?

My husband has to have peanut butter and soda crackers alongside chili...thought this was bizarre when we first married....I have come around!

Are there any foods you just cannot bear eating any way except straight up and delicious?

Tuna Salad

Only one way....albacore tuna, lots of black pepper, a little Hellman's and - the KEY - white balsamic vinegar....

Opinions about TV show Top Chef?

Is it just me? Am I just not sophisticated enough to appreciate most of the food prepared on Top Chef? I'm usually sitting here as the chefs describe their creations thinking how unappealing, or even NASTY, they sound. Remember all those foams?? And the ostrich egg quiche that even the judge said tasted exactly like GLUE?? And does EVERY item have to have thirty ingredients???

mystery Provencal brandy--can you help?

drdawn, I hope you find out from someone what you had in Paris. Several years ago in St Remy de Provence I bought a bottle of Noix de la Saint Jean, aperitif a base de vin, by Henri Bardouin. I have tried desperately to find it as well, with no luck. Hope someone smart can help you....

What Dish Is Your State Famous For, i.e., What Was Invented There?

Don't know if it's true, but the Margarita was supposedly invented in Dallas at a restaurant called Mariano's........but, if not, a big thank you to whoever did!

Thanksgiving dinner: What is your LEAST favorite menu item that you can't get rid of?

Oh, KevinB, you're right - I stand corrected - I got so sidetracked by the horror of marshmallows in sweet potatoes, that I forgot hot chocolate (I grew up in Wisc) and s'mores (I was a camp counselor)...thanks for reminding me.

'fess up, "i'm a hog when it comes to eating ____ ."

peel & eat shrimp (having to peel it slows down the ready-to-eat-peeled frenzy)
Cheetos (I'm so ashamed)
fresh pineapple when in Kauai (acid mouth sores, anyone??)
peanut butter...any kind, any time
Cornnuts (enough salt that the next day you have no eyes)
Craisins
mini-Snickers (Halloween IS the devil's holiday for me!)
7-layer dip (even when the avocado gets dark - just stir it around and IT DISAPPEARS!)

Rant: What is WRONG with the canned cranberry people?

KevinB - any chance your mother was from the south? We had a large bay window in the dining room on the front of our house...NO WAY was my mother going to have anyone drive/walk by and see bottles on the table while we were eating...she's never gotten over seeing the ketchup bottle on Hearst's dining room table at San Simeon...it was her most vivid memory of the whole tour! By the way, as the only daughter (therefore, the dish rinsing/put in dishwasher job was mine),I HATED the extra work of those little bowls!

..."birthing experience"...LOL - how appropriate! And, I agree, dalaimama, it may be the only acceptable can on T'giving Day!

Most Underrated Foods

ooh, the "b" word...bologna! White bread with yellow mustard, 2 slices of bologna (be sure to tear that thing off around the edge!), 2 slices of cheese - mash it together real hard and eat...it all sticks behind your front teeth and is so good! (Haven't had this in YEARS....would have to leave town to buy bologna incognito!! Ha!)

What's the most exotic thing you ate?

Oats with molasses that I shared with my horse?? Does that count? (I was very young.)

Family foods I thought was normal

Grew up with a tiny, athletic mother who thought eating was just a necessary evil... I never knew there was any lettuce except iceberg, ate thin pork chops covered w/ Worcestershire and cooked at 400 for 45 minutes (jerky?), canned peas, instant tea, white bread, off-brand EVERYTHING (not being thrifty, she just grabbed whatever she saw first!), pineapple ring dumped on cottage cheese with a dollop of mayo was "salad". Didn't have a clue that biscuits didn't always come from a can you cracked open on the side of the countertop.

What's The One Thing You Can't Eat, even for money.

Food chic and Nyleve - we must have been separated at birth!!! Ditto with the egg thing - can eat scrambled IF the egg is whipped to death with an egg beater and a littl milk, but if ONE HINT of white is showing, whole thing is down the disposal. As for the deviled egg dilemma - will only admit this in anonymity: I lick out the middle and my niece eats the white...we have to hide to do this. We are ashamed.

Best Sandwich in the World

There's a great little place in Galveston, TX, The Mosquito Cafe - still closed after Hurricane Ike, but hoping to open soon - that does an amazing BLT - maple cured smoked bacon, sundried tomatoes, butter lettuce, rosemary mayo on a light delicate croissant...add a couple of thick slices of avocado...sublime.

Rant: What is WRONG with the canned cranberry people?

Someone said it best - some people like jam, some like jellies. Thanksgiving is not the time to puff up and dictate what people SHOULD like....put 'em both on the table if you want, but pass the gelatinous, purple, ridge-covered stuff my way and keep your disturbingly-textured homemade away!

Thanksgiving dinner: What is your LEAST favorite menu item that you can't get rid of?

I like canned cranberry sauce - there, I said it. I don't like home-made - something about the texture is SO disturbing. I like the noise it makes coming out of the can, I like to see the little can ridges in it and I like it on a turkey sandwich with curry mayo the next day....I feel like I've just come clean in an AA meeting...and, marshmallows belong nowhere but on a stick over a campfire

Really Crappy Unhealthy Disgusting Toe-curling Junkfood!

Okay after reading most of these, I'm not so ashamed....a can of Fritos bean dip spread on white bread with Mayo - were too poor in college for real cheese so add a heavy shake of canned Parm on the mayo side...... oh, just the glorious thought of Frito pie and Sonic burgers with a side of tater tots....

Subzero or Thermador Refer/freezer?

Had a freezer-on-bottom Sub Zero for 4 LONG years - went with it b/c we wanted a copper front on it to match copper countertops. Beautiful fridge - my husband said it was my Jaguar car - gorgeous to look at but didn't run! Sold the house and left new owners an inch-high stack of work orders - had to replace almost everything that was replaceable! Have a GE monogram built-in now - 3 years and not a single hiccup...that Sub Zero was so pretty, but wow, what a problem!

Cleaning cast iron cookware

My elderly neighbor gave me his late wife's cast iron - I'm thrilled to get it but it's sticky, inside and out , and it just doesn't seem clean. I would like to get it really clean before using it. No soap, right? Any ideas?

BBQ Brisket still on the tough side

Oh, thank you so much - sometimes the people on CH are so intimidating I hate to ask a basic cooking 101 question!

What else besides meat is heavenly in the cast-iron skillet?

I somehow screwed up my last post! An elderly neighbor gave me his late wife's cast iron cookware. I'm thrilled to get it but it all feels sort of sticky and not real clean. Tried boiling water in one pan to clean it , but hope there's a way that works better. No soap, right? Thanks

What else besides meat is heavenly in the cast-iron skillet?

Please help - an elderly neighbor gave me his wife's well-used cast iron cookware and I was thrilled. One question: it all feels sort of sticky and not real clean - tried boiling a little water in pot, but not sure if there's a better way to clean thes - no soap, right? Thanks

BBQ Brisket still on the tough side

So embarassed to ask this...when using a meat thermometer with a brisket or roast, do you put it in at start and leave it in during the whole cooking process or just put it in intermittently to check temp? Couldn't find a forum of really dumb questions....

Best of Dallas

When your husband comes, take him to Javier's - truly a Dallas instution near Highland Park. Mexico City type Mexican food - you will remember their black bean soup and filete Cantinflas forever! Casual dress but a dark romantic restaurant - if a little noisy...and, oh, the margaritas... :)
