Duke's Mayo

Its totally shelf stable. I ordered it with White Lily flour and a set of biscuit cutters. I'm trying to channel a southern cook.

Duke's Mayo

I did end up buying some from Amazon. I did find old posts about Cost Plus selling it in California, but that was a few years ago.

Best Cochinita Pibil in Sacramento area?

The restaurant is called "Centro Cocina Mexicana", and it is in midtown, near Sutter's Fort. I second their Cochinita, by the way, it's my favorite. They also have infused tequila's at the bar, the pineapple/chile tequila is fantastic.

Mr Pickles sand shops...

Personally, I like Mr. Pickes. The individual ingredients are a step above, and I think that makes a better sandwich. The sourdough bread is chewy and really sour. The sandwiches are huge, which most people love, but it would be nice if they offered smaller sizes. The garlic sauce is a unique condiment that differentiates them from the Togo's and Subway's.

Sacramento's Top Ten Sandwiches?

Pastrami sandwich, or pretty much any sandwich at Bud's Buffet is a winner, the Reuben at Jamie's Broadway Grill is the best i've had, the meatloaf sandwich at Sellands, and the meatloaf sandwich at Dad's Kitchen are both very good as well. Corti's has some very good sandwiches as well.

Corti Brothers [Sacramento]

We moved from the Bay Area to Sacramento about 10 years ago. I was used to shopping at various Andronico's and Draeger's. Corti bros was a bit of a letdown at the time, but I have come to like it a lot. I still miss the Draeger's in San Mateo, it is such a beautiful store.

Sacramento/Elk Grove restaurants?

You don't have many options in Elk Grove itself. Boulevard Bistro is probably the best non chain restaurant here. It is very good, and worth looking into, but may not fit your criteria. I would suggest looking into Ravenous Cafe. It is just north of Elk Grove in the Pocket neighborhood. It is located off the last I-5 exit before you get to Elk Grove. Good hunting, I hope you find something you like.

The Press Bistro, Sacramento

I took my wife to the Press Bistro last night for dinner, and we were pleasantly surprised with our meal. We knew that the chef was previously head of the kitchen at Ella's, so our expectations were fairly high. We are not wine drinkers, so I can't speak to the wine list, but they have a cocktail list full of interesting combinations. I started with a Mr. Peabody, which featured light and dark rum, muddled pineapple, thai basil and a balsamic reduction. I enjoyed it, it was similar to a mai tai, but with thai basil, which I love.

My wife started with the baba ganoush tapa plate, and I had the crispy lamb meatballs with yogurt sauce. They were both good starters, I especially liked the meatballs, which were crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and paired perfectly with the yogurt sauce.

I had a summer corn soup as a starter, while my wife had a Lyonnaise salad minus the bacon, since she is eating vegetarian at the moment. I'm a sucker for corn soup in the summer, and this version was good, garnished with grilled corn bits and some fresh chives. It was smooth and tasted simply of corn, not complicated by bacon or other strong flavorings. The Lyonnaise salad was good according to my wife, although she didn't touch her croutons because they were oil soaked.

They had a nice summer vegetable risotto as a vegetarian entree, and my wife enjoyed it. It was a white risotto with some squash and other veggies folded in, garnished with shaved parmaggiano and some basil oil. I went with the grilled porkchop with green beans, bacon and carmelized onions. I was very pleased with my entree, the pork was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The green beans still had crunch, and the sweet onions and salty bacon pieces went well together.

We were too full for dessert, but the options looked good. If you like Ella's, but are looking for a more casual, slighty cheaper restaurant, I suggest you give The Press a try.

Sacramento: on foot near capital

It's not exactly fine dining, but Bud's Buffet at1016 10th Street is an outstanding cafeteria style joint with fantastic sandwiches. All meats are made there and sliced to order, pastrami, roast pork, turkey, roast beef, hard to go wrong with any of there sanwiches. It may not be what you are looking for this time, but keep it in mind. Its only open for lunch M-F.

Cuban Sandwich in Sacramento?

Any Sacramento chowhounds know of a pretty good cuban sandwich in our area? I don't know of a significant Cuban population in the area, so I don't know what my chances are of finding an authentic representation.

Loving Hut Vegan Restaurant

Thanks for the heads up! Watching satellite cult tv while i'm dining, I don't think so.

Loving Hut Vegan Restaurant

I appreciate your response. I would not go there expecting a ribeye replacement. My wife and I try to stick to meatless mondays, so the idea of not eating meat is not entirely foreign. I think my most important criterion would be flavor, if it tastes good nothing else matters. As to Melanie's post, the Loving Hut we would be going to is an new one in Elk Grove, which is outside of Sacramento. I will give it a try and try to come back and give my feedback.

Loving Hut Vegan Restaurant

Any chowhounds familiar with this chain? Just opened one near my house, and my wife wants to try it. I really don't understand/agree with the vegan concept, but I am keeping an open mind. I would like an opinion on the quality of the food, not a lesson on veganism, as i'm never going to give up a perfectly cooked ribeye Any dishes we should try, or avoid for that matter? Thanks

Sacramento: need help picking one of three Mexican restaurants

I have always enjoyed Tres Hermanas. We don't go very often, so when we do we usually go to Rick's Dessert Diner just down the street.

Make Authentic San Francisco Sourdough in Palo Alto?

Just purchase some. http://www.sourdo.com/original_san_fr.... Short of hiring a microbiologist to study the strains of yeast in Palo Alto, this will make it easy for you to make bread with a known yeast strain.

Make Authentic San Francisco Sourdough in Palo Alto?

San Francisco sourdough has a specific species of yeast, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobac.... So if you use any other type of starter, you are making plain sourdough bread.

Catering ideas in Sacramento?

One suggestion is Culinary Specialists, which is the catering arm of Mulvaneys Building and Loan. Mulvaneys is a very good restaurant that really specializes in food from local producers. Try the website www.culinaryspecialists.com.

Good Luck

What's the first thing you ate/cooked in 2010?

I made sourdough pancakes from Nancy Silverton's La Brea Bakery cookbook for breakfast. Feeding the starter just to make pancakes is completely worth the effort. Grill-roasting a prime rib roast at the moment for dinner

Recs needed for this Saturday in Oakland

I have to give a 3rd recommendation for Oliveto. We live in Sacramento now, but still make the drive to Oliveto once or twice a year.

Marcella Hazan's chicken recipes

I always make the her classic cacciatore recipe, the one with carrots, celery, peppers, tomatoes. It is really a simple, good recipe, and great over spiral pasta or any other starch for that matter.

Leftover canned chipotles in Adobo Sauce?

Best sandwich ever, spread a little pureed chipotle on sourdough bread, with sliced turkey breast and muenster cheese, and grilled. Fantastic.
