French Press Coffee in West LA
Hey there. Does anyone know of a good breakfast place in west LA that serves french press coffee? Currently, we go to BLD for it, but that's a bit farther than we'd like to drive when it's not a special occasion.
Bonus points if the place has ricotta pancakes!
Thanks!
best LA county macaroons?
I've only had this type of macaroon once but it was really delicious...though I have nothing to compare it to. I got it at Clementine in West LA.
dinner and drinks in Beverly Hills (the Bazaar?)
Our first dish was the lamb with cavatelli. The flavor was amazing and the sauce was crazy good. We ordered bread specifically for dipping into it.
On the recommendation of our very friendly waiter, we got the barbecue pork belly sandwich. He said that is was very popular. I'm really glad we got it, I think it was my favorite out of everything.
We also got the pig ear, which was spicier than expected. My friend was happy it didn't look like an actual ear. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'll get it again.
And finally we got the Poutine. It was the last thing. It was super-tasty, but it was so heavy that we couldn't finish it.
We really lucked out for seating. They had a free table right when we walked in and said we could have it as long as we were done by 9pm, which gave us an hour and a quarter. So we sat down immediately! We didn't feel rushed at all, either. The first item came out really fast and then everything after was well-paced. And, whoever said we could get out of there at $50pp was right. We each paid $48 with tip!

Well, we ended up going to Animal and it was incredible!

Well, I'll have to try that route. I like the idea of showing her something other than the freeway. ...and I happen to be picking her up at the Bonaventure hotel. However, I have been near the Farmer's Market at rush hour (I took a class at Samy's) and I wasn't happy about the traffic there.
Where in the Farmer's Market would you take someone to eat? I have only been there once or twice. I would normally say Loteria Grill, but I know she ate at the Grand Central Market today.

dinner and drinks in Beverly Hills (the Bazaar?)
Oh no, I definitely won't be eating at bazaar. that's just for drinks.
Are there any other options in BH nearby? I'm afraid Animal might be a little too adventurous for my guest.

Oh, that's interesting. I couldn't find a menu on the website and I just assumed it was $$$$. I'll do some more research. Thanks!
eta: I just found the menu on the site. oops.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think that Animal may be out of my price range. I'm more looking for similarity in price and quality rather than food style.
dinner and drinks in Beverly Hills (the Bazaar?)
Hi everyone,
I have an out-of-towner here tonight who wants to have dinner and drinks LA style. We're both in downtown today. I'm not sure if she'll want to get out of the area or if we'll stay downtown. I want to have two options available.
If we stay downtown, we'll do the Edison for drinks and Lazy Ox or the Gorbals for dinner.
If we leave the area, I'm thinking we'll go to the Bazaar for drinks, but I'm not sure about dinner. Any suggestions for something similar to my downtown selections (price-wise and experience-wise)?
I'm choosing Beverly Hills because I know the area pretty well and getting there on the 10 won't be that difficult at rush hour (it's my normal commute).
I've only been to the Bazaar for dinner once, so I don't know what the bar scene is like. If you think there's somewhere better, I'm open to it.
Thanks so much!

South Shore restaurant open on Christmas (breakfast/ice cream)
I guess it doesn't look very good for breakfast. I guess we'll have to just make it.
I did find a place to get dessert though. There is an asian restaurant in the Hingham Shipyard called Typhoon Asian Bistro. So, we'll get some fried ice cream or something there.

Oh that's no good. Maybe if we went as far as Quincy?
South Shore restaurant open on Christmas (breakfast/ice cream)
Hi,
Does anyone know of any restaurants on the South Shore (Hull, Hingham, Cohasset, Weymouth) that will be open on Christmas ? I'm looking for a breakfast place and a place to get ice cream in the evening.
Thanks!

Westside Burgers-Counter, Hole in the Wall, Father's Office Tavern, What Else?
The burger at Palomino is pretty delicious. I've eaten it at the bar, but I don't think it's on the bar menu anymore. If you ask for it, they'll cook it up for you, though. I'm not sure if it's on the dinner menu...
Birthday dinner in Santa Monica
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a restaurant to take my husband to for his birthday this coming Saturday night. After dinner, we will be heading to Harvelles (blues club), which is near the promenade. Here's the parameters:
1. Walking distance to Harvelle's.
2. After wine, entrees, etc, I'd like to pay a total of $100 or so for the two of us.
3. We're open to any types of food...though I'm not crazy for Persian food.
Thanks!
reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners
What information would you like?
reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners
That's exactly it. That's what she doesn't like about LA!
reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners
Hi everyone,
I know there are a million threads about sushi, but I just can't find what I am looking for. I have a friend visiting from out of town. I love her to death, but she is very snobby about LA (even though she has never been here). She expressed interest in going out to sushi on Saturday night. I really want to give her a great sushi experience, but I just can't seem to find anything within my price range that sounds good. I'd like to spend less then $100 pp. It can be for omakase or a la carte. I would like a nice atmosphere... I brought my mother-in-law to Bar Hayama last year, but I just wasn't that impressed with the quality of the sushi.
Any ideas? I am on the westside, but I would travel for the perfect place.
Thanks!

Breakfast at Miami Beach near airport
Thanks! Icebox and Lincoln Road look right up my alley!
mozzarella ciliegine with cream
Hi everyone,
I just bought some of this at whole foods. I'm not quite sure what to do with the cream. I was thinking of some of it, along with the mozzarella on a pizza. Is this something that can be done? What else could I do with it? Are there any good recipes....or should I just spread it on a piece of bread?
I've never seen this type of thing before and google searches aren't helping me out here.
Anyone every had this before? How did you eat it?
Thanks!
Breakfast at Miami Beach near airport
Hi,
I'm visiting southern florida for 3 days in May on Mother's day weekend. I have 6 hours (6am to 12pm) in Miami while I wait for my sister's flight to arrive. I don't really want to sit around the airport for 6 hours, so I thought I'd check out Miami Beach. It will be a Friday morning.
I'm planning on renting a car, so I'm looking for a place to have a nice breakfast with outdoor seating in Miami Beach. Ideally, I'd like to be able to either take a walk on the beach afterward or explore an interesting neighborhood.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Good ethnic restaurant moderately priced, good wine
Thanks for the suggestions. I should clarify that a BYOB with a reasonable corkage fee works for us.
Good ethnic restaurant moderately priced, good wine
Hi everyone,
I am looking for a good place to take my in-laws this Saturday night for a nice meal. We were going to go to Chichen Itza, but then realized that's where we took them last year when they were visiting. We'd like to try somewhere new. So, I'm looking for something with a similar feel to Chichen ( the old Westlake location). Here's my criteria:
1. Dishes no more than $20/pp
2. Good wine list
3. Tasty homey ethnic food
4. No Indian food
5. Not super crowded - I don't want anything super trendy where I will have to wait an hour to get seated
6. Decent atmosphere so that we can have a nice, relaxed meal
The closer to the westside, the better. But, we are willing to travel 45 minutes if it is really good.
Thanks so much!

Lunch trucks near LA Live?
There are always trucks at the corner of 9th and hope on Fridays (near FIDM and Ralph's). I just came back from one. It is hit or miss on other days.
Pad Thai Differences Boston vs. LA
I am definitely open to trying other things and that's what I typically do. I'm a big fan of the papaya salad at Ruen Pair.
I'm really just curious about this difference...and sometimes you just want something that is familiar.
Pad Thai Differences Boston vs. LA
I moved to LA from Boston 2 years ago and I've had pad thai here maybe 3 times. I was shocked to find that the dish is completely different than the one they serve up in Boston. I don't know if my memory is failing me, but I believe the dish in Boston uses less translucent noodles and the sauce is more peanutty and not orange at all.
Any idea where to get the kind they serve in Boston? And...why is it so different?
Best Restaurants in Philly for a gift
I really like the idea of getting a Starr card and a Garces Restaurant Group card. Then they can choose for themselves. Maybe I'll do Horizons as the third one.
Thanks everyone!
Best Restaurants in Philly for a gift
These are all great. Maybe we will just split it into two certificates.
One that I was considering is Morimoto. Any thoughts on that?
