I called them multiple times before I posted that, and no one picked up.

Bagels in Calgary Sought

Add me as another Montreal Bagels convert to the list! I can't imagine eating any other bagels now. Do they take "orders" over the phone? Because when I went at 2:30pm yesterday, I bought the last plain bagel they had.

Furusato - Edmonton

The restaurant recently changed hands, and is owned by a Vietnamese family now. I won't be going back anytime soon.

Calgary: Looking for Low Sodium Soy Sauce

T&T and most Korean or Chinese mom and pop grocery stores will sell Yamasa brand low sodium soy sauce.

Bee Kim Heng jerky from Vancouver

The pork jerky is much easier to bite and it's what I grew up eating. The beef one takes too much work to bite into, and BKH jerky is messy. Their jerky is not dry like the North American style jerkies, it's wet & saucy.

Cooking Blow Torch

Just buy one from Dealextreme.com for like $2. Works perfectly.

Bee Kim Heng jerky from Vancouver

I always buy a few pounds of pork jerky from BKH when I'm in Vancouver. IMO, only the pork jerky is worth getting. Once you try BKH pork jerky, it's hard to eat the beef version.

Always call ahead in the morning to "reserve" your order. Their phone number is (604) 875-8688. Once you get there, you tell them your name, you pay and away you go. It's $19/lb, and they only accept CASH!

A few quirks for 1st timers: The shop isn't set up like a regular shop. When you walk in, you see the big grill behind the counter on the left, a cash register on the right of the counter, and a Coke cooler to the right selling some beverages; that's it. You won't see any "selection" of jerky displayed out in the store front. It's a type of store you would only know about from word of mouth, and it's in & out.

Attached are some pictures from when I bought from on Saturday to get your stomach going =)

Bovril in Edmonton

Success!!! Bovril & its counterpart Marmite can be found at:

Jacaranda Imports
3018A - 106 Street
Edmonton, AB

http://www.jimports.ca/

It says right on their website that they sell Bovril & Marmite when you check out the "Spreads" section description under the site map link.

Definitely call before heading in, because they have the weirdest store hours I've ever seen; only open 3 days a week from 11am to 5pm on Wed, Fri & Sat. I'll be going there this weekend, I'll report back!

Bovril in Edmonton

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the ones that come in a squeeze brown bottle, which is not what we're looking for.

The one we're looking for has a molasses consistency. A picture of it is posted below.

Good Chinese Takeout in Edmonton?

I've never even heard of Ho Lee Chow. I'm talking about Ho Ho's on campus at the UofA. Maybe I should take a picture for you when school starts up again.

Taste of Edmonton - not to miss?

Skip!

Most restaurants just serve overpriced small portion size versions of their appetizers. Not the same as it once was; before Churchill Square was repaved. I feel that it had a different vibe back then, when it was "real"(?!) Haha.

Best sushi in Edmonton

For people not in the know, Ichiban's menu is practically the same as the 109St Kyoto's. In fact, it's probably 95% the same, that's because the owner & his wife used to work in the kitchen of Kyoto before opening Ichiban.

Now for those who ask how I know... I'm friends with the owner's son, daughter, & niece.

I do enjoy Ichiban sushi a lot. However, I will agree that I've had more than my fair share of "off days". But it's not bad enough to make me complain or swear off from ever going to the restaurant again. The sushi "chefs" working the sushi bar are just regular employees with no real sushi training whatsoever. Same goes for the owner. He only knows how to make sushi because he used to work as a sushi chef @ Kyoto.

The only reason I frequent Ichiban is because their lunch bento box for $10 is amazing value, and tastes pretty good. And their beef tataki ponzu sauce is to die for! The girlfriend and I could drink that stuff everyday.

Good Chinese Takeout in Edmonton?

Ho Ho's in HUB at the University of Alberta. Great tasting & huge portions for your money. There's a reason why Ho Ho's has a huge lineup between class changes.

Note: what I just said applies only to stuff ordered off the menu, not the combo foods under the heating lamps ;)

We use Van Houtte in my office. They come around every Monday. They also stock snacks and soups.

Later Night Eats in Edmonton:

I know I'd rather not take the risk. It's a shame that the best late night Chinese is @ Garden Bakery, which is located right next to that hotel with drunks always in the entrance. There has been too many times where I've come out of restaurants with shady people asking me for money, or just suspicious people hanging around.

Later Night Eats in Edmonton:

Just be very careful around Chinatown... with all the homeless people around, I would actually highly advise against going there once the sun has gone down.
