where can I find a great homemade veggie burger (non soy based)?

In the East Village, Black Market, next to Niagara at 7th and A gets high marks. Also, Kate's Joint at 4th and B.

Quick Meal near the Beacon

There's a casual Greek place across B'way from the Beacon. Don't remember the name though. We were in a little bit of a rush to get to a show and they got us fed and out in time. I'd say 75th or 76th St.

Upscale mexican

Agree about bad service at Hecho. My friend and I were practially begging someone to bring more drinks for us. Food was so-so. Small portions were ovepriced. Wouldn't go back despite being in the area quite a bit.

Good Happy Hour near Radio City

Anyone know of a good Happy Hour in the Radio City area? Cheap-ish beers and cocktails along with bar-type munchies. Prefer RCMH and west. Not afraid of a walk. Thanks

Sausage & Pepper Tray. How Much?

A friend is having a party for 100 or so people. There will be lots of food but she also wants to make about three trays of Sausage and Peppers. Any idea about how much sausage she should buy? I keep seeing 6-8 oz. of protein per prson, but don't know if this applies to 'tray' food. Thanks.

All-You-Can-Eat Sushi near Red Bank / Long Branch?

Went to Kanji a couple of weeks ago. It was good.

All-You-Can-Eat Sushi near Red Bank / Long Branch?

I know there are a few in NYC and Northern N.J. Any down Monmouth way?

Hackensack...HELP!

The Cuban place on south Main St. is pretty good. Start at the south end of the street and make your way 'uptown.' There are a few different places, although since I'm not in the area anymore, I can't name them. Brooklyn Coal Oven is very good. Lido is good too (It's way north on Main St.). Is the indian place still open in Wholesale Liquidators? Just down the other side of the Essex St. Hill, on the left, despite it's 'in store' decor, it's always gotten pretty good reviews here. Cedar Lane in Teaneck, 5 minutes from anywhere in Hackensack, has a bunch of places too, including Veggie Heaven chinese.

ABV on Bottles? Your thoughts.

What do you all think of the idea of beer labels having the ABV number? Is it something that might determine a purchase? Would a higher or lower ABV help make the choice between two similar beers? Do you assume a certain ABV range if the number isn't listed? Is there an obligation on the brewer's part to let the customer know what the beer is packing? Thoughts?

Nikos Trapezi - Long Branch

After reading a bunch of reviews, I went to Niko's (Nikos?) last night. Basic storefront which isn't done up in the usual blue and white Greek decor. High ceiling gives an airy feel as well. We went the 'many-appetizer' route. The waitress (Shae) took about two minutes to warm up to us and was great throughout. A bowl of assorted olives and some grilled italian-type bread basket came when we were seated. Would probably have preferred pita, but it was adequate. Two of us ordered a small country salad (enough for two), Skordalia with fried eggplant and zucchini (Greek Chips on the menu), broiled octopus (excellent), Saganaki. . . two pieces, but sadly no flambe and no oompah! Also, a large piece, entree portion of Spanakopita. All dishes were very good. Service was excellent. The owner came by for a chat. He's Irish! His wife's family is Greek. Bill was under $50 before tip. I'd definitely go back.

New Jersey Brewpubs...

Tours at High Point Brewery (Ramstein Beers) are on the second Saturday of the month. There are now tours at 2:00pm and 3:30pm. However, the brewery is open for growler fills and samples, Monday through Saturday. There are usually 2-4 beers on tap. Boaks is also brewed by High Point.

The Extended Tourist's Pizza Review

My regular Artichoke 'partner' thinks the crab slice is among the best ever. I went last night and wish I had brought a square pie home instead of just a couple of slices. The marg. slices don't really re-heat that well.

The Extended Tourist's Pizza Review

When you go to Artichoke, understand beforehand that there isn't any seating except for a picnic table on the sidewalk. I've been to a bunch of the places always mentioned on this board and find Artichoke to be better than them all (Haven't been to DiFara's). The artichoke slice gets a lot of bad press, but it's really more of a pizza novelty than real pizza. I think it tastes pretty good. The Margharita and square slices are excellent. Go when you're really hungry, split an artichoke slice (They happily cut it and it's huge), and also get a square and a marg. Squeeze your way back out to 14th St. and enjoy!

Pumpkin Syrup for coffee

I'd like to make a basic pumpkin flavored syrup to put in coffee. What ratio of pumpkin spice should be used with the sugar? I was thinking of a 1-1/2 cup sugar - 1 cup water mix. A tablespoon or two of spice? Thanks.

Best single beer, not best brewery

The Winter Wheat is bottled. The Ice Bock is only available in growlers. I think Ramstein is available at Whole Foods in Manhattan.

Best single beer, not best brewery

For Winter I'd have to have Ramstein Ice Bock. It's their Winter Wheat, frozen and supercharged up to 13.5% ABV. It's delicious, as is the regular Winter Wheat.

Do "unfiltered wheat beers" or "white" beers have more calories than others?

Beer stands at the new Yankee Stadium have posters with Calorie Counts for each beer served. Guinness has, by far, the least calories of them all.

Basement Bistro - Earlton NY

Yep, I'm the vegetarian. A few people have asked if B.B. could accomodate me. Seems as though Damon had it pretty easily covered. My dinner was similar to what everyone else had, with a few non-meat substitutions. There was a layered 'napoleon' of mushrooms and potatoes that was very good and I had a few different fried flower blossoms. I thought that the mushroom and smoked corn soup was one of the best things I've ever tasted. The 'bleu' cheese on the dessert platter wasn't too far behind. What an experience! It's hard to believe that he was going to do it all over again at 11:30. We were there for exactly five hours! One thing that's unfortunate, and is more me than Basement Bistro, is that with so many different courses, dishes and tastes spread out over five hours I've had trouble remembering some of my meal. The pictures on eGullett have brought some of it back (those photos show three meat portions. Our table had six I believe.). Damon was also amazingly non-chalant about a few of my courses, saying that he 'just happened to find this mushroom 'as I was looking at some other vegetables.' Then he makes something incredible out of that mushroom! I've never been to WD-50, but to me, chef Baehrel can be considered *the* super-scientist de cuisine. His knowledge and, more importantly, what he does with that knowledge is amazing. Who would think to brine meats in pine needles? My friend was particularly interested in the offal dinner I think we overheard you talking about. For whatever my opinion is worth, I highly recommend Basement Bistro. The reservation policy didn't bother me a bit. I made a phone call with a couple of requested dates and put it on the back burner. We drove about 1-1/2 hours to get there. I can understand some trepidation if the journey is going to be much more 'out-of-town.' The chef greeted us at the door, gave us a preview of some of the foods we'd be having, gave us a complementary bottle of sparkling wine, brought out all of the dishes, explaining each ingredient, cleared and crumbed the table after each course, told a few stories, and sent us home with a loaf of his bread and another complementary bottle of wine. Oh, and he also grew and prepared every morsel that we ate, except for the meat dishes which he 'only' did the butchering on!

For anyone who's been, What is the dress code like at Basement Bistro.? Do you need to get 'dressed up' or do black pants and a collared shirt make the grade? Greenville 1899 Inn is about 10 minutes away and they will arrange round-trip taxi if you're enjoying the wine pairings.

What's new on LBI?

Heard Voodoo is gone too. Is that right?

Stay away from Ravioli and More (Less)!

Any good restaurants near Ringwood, Oakland, Greenwood Lake?

Bill, Have you been to the new italian in the building where Ruga used to be? Possibly Travato Due? They have another place in Elmwood Park.

To the original poster, there's a German restraunt on the west side of Greenwood Lake called Breezy Point. I haven't been there, but a friend marked it as a favorite. Also, on the east shore are Emerald Point, a decent bar with outdoor patio and average food as well as the latest incarnation of 'The Castle, which is right on the water and has bar type stuff (burgers, fries, nachos)

Any good restaurants near Ringwood, Oakland, Greenwood Lake?

In Ringwood, Raku has much better than average sushi. Across Skyline Drive is a new Thai place which is also owned by the Raku folks. Haven't tried it yet but the menu looks very good. Berta's is good. Be on the lookout for their '$5 over price' wine dinnrs and the Sunday dinner special too. Ringwood Pizza (Mall by the library) has an excellent 'Grandma's Pie' which isn't on the menu, so ask for it. There's also a Thai place in West Milford that isn't bad. Make sure they understand to make it spicy, if that's the way you like it. Prime 15 in Ringwood has decent burgers.

Beer Stores off of I-80 in NJ/PENN

Second Saturday of every month, High Point Brewery, maker of Ramstein Beers, has a tour / tasting from 2 - 4. Probably about 15 minutes north of Route 80. They're open most Saturdays to buy too.

best sangria in nyc

What Potato Is Best For French Fries?

So do you only make one small batch at a time? It seems a little wasteful of both time and oil if you need to keep removing the fries and oil and then re-upping with cold oil again.
