fiddleheads at trader joe's [moved from Washington DC & Baltimore board]

I bought a little bag of fiddleheads yesterday at Trader Joes (in pikesville) and I must say that they were delicious. However, I made the mistake of eating a handful of them raw. Fiddlehead Ferns should be at least be cooked lightly. Raw they have a slight toxicity and can make you sick (like i am now) if you consume a large amount raw.

Baltimore's Newest Restaurants

Hersh's Pizza in Fed Hill. My husband and I tried it the other night and thought the pizza was fantastic. IMO Baltimore is a pizza desert, this place is the only decent slice I've found in a year of living here. Hersh's serves Neapolitan style pizza, the crust is very thin, crispy on the bottom and tender in the middle. My husband have the traditional margherita pizza and I had kale and pistachio. The food was great, the service was a bit awkward and it is SO difficult to park in that area.

As a Detroit transplant I am spoiled by the likes of Avalon International Breads and Zingerman's Bake House which produce delicious bread made with honest ingredients. I am at a loss for this in Baltimore; any leads?

Allegro @ Farmington Hills, MI (DTW)

Hello Detroit,

As a former Detroiter and daughter of Russian speakers; I can tell you that yes Allegro is a LOT better than Fiddler, but also slightly more expensive. It would definatley be an experience for ya'll to go on a friday or saturday night. They have entertainment (cant speak for the quality) Enjoy, Nah Zdarovyah!

Cantina Diablo’s in Royal Oak [DTW]

Before I'd left I'd been to the Ferndale location twice, both times the experience was underwhelming and the food was mediocre. The first time for my friends bachelorette party, they messed up a bunch of our orders brought the wrong drinks completely and lost the order for my fish tacos so whilst everyone was eating I waited twiddling my thumbs. The second time I came to Diablo's was against my will, my fiance needed a big screen to watch U of M football on. They brought him a beer that was mostly ice, I have no idea how they managed to turn beer to ice but they did. When questioned about it the server said that it would melt shortly :/ when it didnt, only then did the he bring a new beer. During both of my visits I noticed that their "home made" tortillas tasted of palm kernel oil. This place isn't worth your time. If you want gringo mexican food you're better off at Monterrey's Cantina a few blocks south of the Royal Oak Location. Or try the divey but lovable Margarita's Cafetal on woodward.

Coconut cream pie in Detroit ?

Last summer I had pretty good (for michigan) coconut cream pie at Astoria Bakery Royal Oak. This came as a surprise because most of their stuff looks better than it tastes. Last summer it wasnt a regular menu item and for some reason they never keep the good stuff going to too long; years ago they made great peach cobbler :(
