Milwaukee -ish / Green Bay -ish Area Take Out Food For Road Trips
El Cabrito is a few miles off the freeway, so if location is number one factor it may be too far away. It's about 20-25 blocks off the free way. But it's the best. Theres so may options in Milwaukee I'm sure others will chime in with recommendations. This board is really good with suggestions. Agee other ideas would be getting a sandwich from Gloriosos on Brady, Kopps in Glendale a sandwich from Benjis deli in Brown Deer. I'll post more recs when I think of them
Milwaukee -ish / Green Bay -ish Area Take Out Food For Road Trips
A few ideas that pop in to my head right away are Big Star Drive-In, Kenosha. If I was forced to choose one greasy burger place to eat the rest of my life, it would be here.
In Green Bay, definitely check out Joe's Texas BBQ. I've posted about this place before. It is some of the best brisket I've had anywhere in the country, made by a Texas transplant who couldn't find barbecue he liked in Green Bay, so started doing his own. Different style than you'd see at Ashley's, Speed Queen, etc..
In Marinette, right on the main drag (can't remember if it's 41 or 141) is Mickey-Lu's BBQ. Don't let the name fool you, there's no BBQ, but they have a charcoal grill right behind the diner counter making some really good, back yard style burgers. I've been there a few times and loved the burgers both times. I got the tip from a local and they seem to do a ton of business.
As for MKE, your options are retry much endless, so it's kind of tough to even know where to start, but I would maybe recommend stopping at one of the Mexican taco trucks on the near south side. Theyre all similar, but my favorite is El Cabrito on Mitchell/Muskego. Goat is there specialty and their tortas are great! Good road food. There's also one perhaps more convenient for your travels right off of 94 on 6th and Beecher.
I certainly don't need to tel you about Pasties in the UP, but I do like JeanKays in Iron Mountain.
Hope that helps!
We Loved Odd Duck! (Milwaukee)
What were a few of the best items? I'm going there soon. Thanks for the report!
MKE Regulars
We all give our opinions and recommendations for special places for out of towners, but where is your regular, go to spot, assuming that you don't dine at Sanford once a week? For me, it's Ono Kine Grindz. I get the poke for lunch at least once a week, sometimes more. I can't get enough of the stuff.
Good eatin' near Green Bay mall on Bay Park Square?
I travel to Green Bay for business quite frequently. I'm no expert, but here's what I've found. (By the way, nothing in Green Bay is more than 10-15 minutes away).
Joe's Barbeque- This is seriously some of the best BBQ I've found, anywhere. The guy's from Texas, couldn't find good 'que when he moved to GB so he started doing his own. Little take out place with only a couple of tables. Sell's it by the 1/2lb and I don't think anything is more the $5. If you like BBQ, go here for lunch.
Hinterland is fairly upscale with a very cool, trendy vibe to it. Locally sourced ingredients and definitely for 'foodies'. The menu changes frequently.
Republic is a steakhouse DT. Cool, clubby sort of atmosphere. I found them to be a little inconsistent, but I have had some excellent steaks there. Some of the seafood has been pretty good to. I almost always get a NY done "Pittsburgh style", which is nothing more than crusted in kosher salt, but it's damn good!
I've also had good meals at Chefusion. I would avoid Regatta and most of the sushi places I've had are just OK.
Finally, even though it's a chain, I do like Old Chicago. If I just want to have a few beers in front of some nice TV's with pretty good bar food, that's where I go (it's super close to my hotel).
Quick Milwaukee visit - recs needed
For dinner I would check out something on Milwaukee St., such as Umami Moto or Carnevor. You could go to Distil right next door for some great craft cocktails. All of these places have great food with a very trendy, hip atmosphere and plenty of energy. I think it will fit what you're looking for.
For brunch I would go to Blues Egg if you don't mind a 10 minute drive from downtown.
Mke got a little nod in the newest Food and Wine mag
Amen to that! The burger at Distil is great. Even better with a bourbon Manhattan. I saw the article too. They also mentioned Bryant's , which has been one of my favorites for decades.
Ono Kine Grindz - hawaiian food in Tosa (MKE)
One of my favorite places. I eat there about once a week and always get the poke with sides of Lomi and wakame. My kids love the char siu chicken. Everything there is very good and l really like to see a unique business run by really nice people do well.
Fish Fry that is kid-friendly
I'd recommend Lakefront Brewery. Its definitely not the best fish fry around, but it's got a fun, loud atmosphere due in large part to the live polka band. Not to mention, the beer is outstanding. The seating is set around large, round communal tables, so seating for seven will be no problem.
Suggestions around Iron Mountain, Mi?
Don't know where to sit down and eat, but you gotta take some pasties to go. I like JeanKays the best!
Braise-MKE
Had dinner at Braise last night. Wanted to let you all know that it was REALLY good. I recommend it highly. The star of the show was the chicken on gnocchi with salsa verde. The best thing with chicken since the Social's Mac and Cheese. Crispy pig, potato tart and duck were also very good. Very cool vibe and nice, comfortable bar, too.
MKE- Has anyone tried Smoke Shack yet?
Glad you posted this. I was thinking of making the same post. I haven't yet tried it, mostly because the prices seem obscenely high. 30 bucks for a rack of ribs? Not sure I need such high quality meat when it comes to BBQ.
Milwaukee Pizza,,,Help!
I like Balistreri's, prefer the Bluemound Inn, and enjoy eating right at the bar. I've also really enjoyed Rustico for a "fancy" pizza, but I don't go there frequently. Bluemound Inn is definitely our go to place.
MKE - lunch/quick dinner around Children's hospital
Glad you like it! I probably go there more than any other place around. They do actually have loco moco on Sundays for breakfast. My staple, though, is the poke, Hawaiin style sashimi. It's unbelievable. Even their chili plate, complete with hot dogs, is good!
MKE - lunch/quick dinner around Children's hospital
Blues egg, 76th/bluemound has awesome breakfast and lunch. I would also agree that the tosa village has great options. Would also add Leff's Lucky town, as they have good bar food. You could
Also take Swan blvd. to north ave. there's an Alterra. If you take North down to 72nd there is a great Hawaiin place called Ono Kine Grindz. Really great place serving very authentic Hawaiin food. Truly unique for WI. Get the Poke! Good Luck!!
Best wings in MKE?
GREAT topic! Like Fowler , I like my homemade wings the best. After that, Leff's is my absolute number one. Never had any better. Gotta go on Tuesday, their wing night, when they seem to be the best. Also, if youre not aware, there's two local websites dedicated to wings. Milwaukeewings.com and awingthing.com.
I found a source for duck fat! (great for seasoning/frying) [Windsor,WI]
All the way in the back, maybe in dairy. Top shelf, to the left. Like I said, it was a 7oz container, not a 3.5# like the first posted found.
I found a source for duck fat! (great for seasoning/frying) [Windsor,WI]
Thought you guys would like to know that I also saw it at fresh market in Brookfield. 7oz container. I'm sorry I don't remember the price, I think it may have been around 7 bucks, but I'm not very sure. As far as being rendered, I did look at the label, but it didnt say. Sorry, not very knowledgable about duck fat. Hope that helps!
WI - Best Overall Restaurants (According to OpenTable)
Interesting observation. I think chowhound is so reliable for two reasons. People can ask specifically what they want to know and it's small enough where, on your regular board, you can learn who you do and do not share common tastes with. You can't get that from yelp or open table.
MKE - Has anyone tried La Parihuela or Mr. Sebass?
Just had lunch at Mr. Sebass. I had the papa a la huanciano ( I know I just spelled it wrong) and the lomo slatado. Both were excellent. I would descrIbe them both as excellent home cooking. Nothing fancy; and that's a good thing. I also overheard another table ravi ng over the rotisserie chicken. Mr. Sebass said that's one of their best things. I know I'm going back to try it!
MKE - Carol Deptolla's Top 30 Restaurants
I value the opinions of you and others that post on ChowHound much more than Carol Deptolla's. Not taking a shot at her, but I think one persons opinion can only be given so much weight. Yes, the list is pretty much the same with a few head scratchers, which I guess is good as it might make try a few places I haven't been.
Milwaukee recs needed - beer in particular
This is one of those posts where where dozens of recommendations come to mind. For beer, I really like most of brews from Lakefront (which does a really great tour if you have time). One of my favorite beers is Riverwest Stein, which is also available on tap at Miller Park. I also recommend Knotstock, made by Furthermore Brewery. It' s brewed with black pepper, tastes way better than it sounds and goes great with food.
For cheap local fare, there's tons of great options, I'd check out Conejito's, which is right over the 6th street bridge from where you're staying. It's the ultimate cheap dive, pretty good Mexican food served on paper plates, nothing over $5. Some would call it a local institution. Also, Food Truck Fridays at Cathedral Square is within walking distance from you hotel over the lunch hour if that fits into your schedule.
Finally, as for brats, check out the Usinger's retail store on 3rd street. Brats here aren't really restaurant fare, more for backyard grilling and yes, tailgating. My final tip would be to take a walk around the parking lot before the game. If you're not familiar with Milwaukee, you'll be surprised how friendly we are. Simply striking up a conversation and showing a sincere interest in what people are cooking will probably earn you a free sample!
Best places in Green Bay?
It's all about the meat. They don't add any sauce while smoking, only a little on the side, which is of average quality , somewhat sweet. They do the Texas style, true BBQ in which they think sauce is only used if you're trying to hide something. Meat is sold by the half pound or in sandwiches. I got the beef brisket and rib tips. Both were excellent. I really recommend it. After being there I found the following review in the local Green Bay newspaper. www.greenbaypressgazette.com/.../-Meat-king-Joe-s-Texas-BBQ-smokes- slow-low-an-eye-simplicity
Best places in Green Bay?
I know this probably doesn't fit exactly with the original post, but I just wanted to share anyway...Joe's BBQ on Ashland. It's seriously some of the best bbq I've had. Apparently some guy from Texas moved to Green Bay and couldn't find real bbq, so he did his own thing. Take out only, except for a few picnic tables. It will be a regular stop for me when in Green Bay.
Best places in Green Bay?
I would definitely second Hinterland. I would also check out Chefusion. I've had some excellent meals there.
Milwaukee southside recs, Brazilian restaurant/groceries?
I like La Canoa for Mexican seafood, otherwise El Cabrito or Las Esmerelda's are my favorites, both very much family style. The only Brazilian place I can think of is Sabor, which is Brazilian Churrascaria, not sure if that's what you're really looking for though.

Looking for Pizza and onion rings in Milwaukee
I'd go Balestreri's on Bluemound. My favorite pizza in Mke, only a slight edge over Zaffiro's, and they have buttermilk onion rings. Would advise sitting right at the bar to enjoy some local neighborhood flavor with some of the best (professional) bartenders in town.
