For vegans missing cheese...

I love Daiya! It's really good for grilled cheese, as well as pizza.

Thank you, CH!

I love the home cooking board but it is super exciting to have a vegetarian and vegan board, being vegan just got even more interesting I think.

Beginning My Vegan Journey

I've been vegan for three years and love it! Good luck with your journey and I concur with the others, Isa Chandra Moskowitz's books are golden. I also really love this cookbook; http://www.amazon.com/dp/0471748099/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=7630598247&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16016884861095877994&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_5cu6m160l1_b

What's for Dinner? #127 [old]

Have you tried looking in the Asian or ethnic section of your super market? That's where I usually find it. Also, I've found it at Walmart in their Asian section as well. Hope you can find it, it's wonderful.

About to go Vegan - need cookbook advice!

I second Veganomicon and Vegan with a Vengeance. Really, you can't go wrong with any of Isa Moskowitz's books. Same goes for Terry Romero. I have a cookbook called Tofu 1-2-3 that is absolutely indispensable, the author is Meribeth Abrams.

What's for Dinner # 112 [old]

Dinner was a lazy affair as I had a terrible allergic reaction to something and woke up at 11 p.m. after taking a load of benedryl. We threw some sweet potato fries (trader joes) into the oven and I doctored up a can of vegetarian baked beans by adding some dijon, soy sauce, and brown sugar. The vegetable was sauteed spinach with a ton of minced garlic. The darling took pity on me and sliced me up a honey crisp apple for dessert.

She'll be surpassing me in skill soon enough, she's just too bright! She's nine and just picks up on everything. Plus, she'll try anything once. The lentils were good, but next time I'll cook my own.

What's for Dinner? #111 [old]

Taught my god daughter how to bake bread last night, so some of the left overs will be consumed with tonight's dinner. We bought a package of the pre-steamed French lentils from our last Trader Joe's trip, so I'm thinking that a cold lentil salad will probably be dinner. The dressing from this recipe (http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2006/11/cheap-caviar-1/) looks good, although I may up the dijon and use champagne vinegar instead of red wine. Regardless, anything served with home baked bread can't be bad, right?

What's For Dinner? part #107 [old]

The darling and I were talking about how both our moms used to make canned new potatoes with a ton of butter and parsley and garlic powder in the oven. Some how we went from that to canned new potatoes+ smart balance organic+ half a sliced yellow onion+ garlic powder, salt and pepper. That cooked for about 30 minutes and then we added a can of small green peas and a portion of soyrizo from trader joes that a sauteed prior so it wouldn't be too greasy. The dish came out well, though I wish i had precooked the onions a bit as they still have a crunch to them. Darling said it was wonderful as is, albeit a bit spicy.

What's for Dinner - Part #103 [old]

Thanks, Maria. My dad was only 52 and it was quite sudden, but I'm glad he lived out the remainder of his days someplace so lovely.

The darling is just that, so the title is well deserved. Tonight we just had boca chik'n nuggets and tator tots for dinner, although I'm looking to cut a cantaloupe we got out of the garden this morning before the storm rolled in.

What's for Dinner - Part #103 [old]

The North Fork is a beautiful place. My father lived in Greenport for the last few years, til he passed away this March. I spent some time on the beaches and visiting small markets and stuff while I was there taking care of him. It's a gorgeous place, filled with lots of tranquility and peace.

As for what's for dinner, I had an everything bagel, untoasted. The darling had a taco made with refried beans and tomatoes from the garden.

What's For Dinner? Part 70 [old]

I'm so excited for you!

What's For Dinner? Part 67

I'm so sorry to hear that. Losing a furry loved one is so hard. You're in my thoughts.

Help! Frozen Turkey!

Thank you. I told her that it wasn't a good idea that she cook them frozen. She doesn't seem to think she is wrong.

Help! Frozen Turkey!

I'm hoping someone on the boards can help me. My sister-in-law is in charge of making the church Thanksgiving dinner, which is tomorrow night. Unfortunately, she didn't have the foresight to thaw any of the turkeys...

When we talked to her today, she said she was just going to cook the turkey and 3 turkey breasts frozen. Has anyone ever done this? Will it work? Also, we are expecting about 80 people to come, will that be enough turkey?

Thank you in advance for all the help, I have no idea what we're going to do.

Fancy Vegan dinner party

I'm vegan, so I can relate to how this might be a bit difficult. I make a really lovely vegan cheesecake, if you need any ideas for dessert.

Your Favorite Pumpkin Recipe

Hey Chef Chicklet, I made these tonight and they smell heavenly. I haven't eaten them yet because they're still cooling=) Anyhow, I have a question. I put them in for 25 minutes with the intention to turn the muffin pans halfway and they were done already. I'm not sure why, but maybe my oven just runs really hot.

Regardless, they look delicious and I can't wait to eat one! Thank you for the recipe.

What's For Dinner? Part L!

Well, if this is the kind of club I get to join when loosing my job, at least we'll all eat well;) Thank you for the kind words, I've been trying to stay upbeat. I think I'll make zeppoli tonight!

What's For Dinner? Part L!

Thank you! I'm sure things will be fine. I'm making pancakes for dinner, so life can't be all bad=)

What's For Dinner? Part L!

I'm sorry to hear that ghg, but your right, now you'll have tons of time in the kitchen! I lost my job earlier this week and I think I'll probably gain some weight from all the baking/ cooking I'll be doing...

Where do you get your cookbooks?

I buy many of my cookbooks in the bargain section of the Barnes and Noble. They often have a great selection of ethnic cookbooks for under $10.

Great Bruschetta Recipe?

Holy crap, how could i have forgotten to say the garlic! What an oversight. I use a healthy dose of fresh garlic in addition to the other listed ingredients, thanks for reminding me alkapal!

Great Bruschetta Recipe?

We have a ton of tomatoes and basil in our garden as well, and I've probably made bruschetta four or five times in the last week. I don't have a recipe, as in exact amounts, but I can tell you how I prepare it.

First, I peel my tomatoes. After seeding them, I chop them up. Along with the tomatoes, I add some really good olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, kosher salt, a bit of red onion, and at the very end a bunch of chopped basil. My SO likes it so much, she eats it with a spoon=)

What's For Dinner? Part XXXVII

Last night, dinner turned out to be better than I expected. We had spinach with garlic and olive oil wrapped in flour tortillas, sweet potato fries on the side.

Tonight, it was chocolate chip pancakes with a berry medley on top.

vegetarian chowhounds

Hi! Well, I'm vegan, and I'd have to say it's for a variety of reasons. I feel better physically when I don't eat meat or animal products. However, I think the main reason I choose not to eat meat and such is ethical reasons, I'm just not okay with how we treat the animals we eat. I respect everyone's food choices, and I know there are lots of 'hounds that go out of their way to source humanely raised and slaughtered animals.

My favorite veggie food is probably tomato pie (the Italian kind) and tofu cheese cake!

Best Sandwich in the World

Thanks. That's what I thought. I just got a little confused when tazia said vegan BLTA. I make something similar with Smart bacon, which is vegan.

Best Sandwich in the World

The Morningstar Farms bacon that they carry in my grocery is not vegan. Is there a vegan version?

What are the lovely things in your kitchen

My two favorite items in the kitchen are,
1)My set of vegetable peelers I got for Christmas. They're from williams and sonoma.

2) And my set of all clad measuring cups, also from williams and sonoma, also a Christmas gift.

What I buy when my foodstamps come in.

I totally agree with you. I dislike that people assume that because someone is on food stamps means they don't know anything about nutrition. I understand that this is true for some people, but it is not always the case. I was reading an article about food stamp use among hipsters. People were complaining about them buying organic fish, fresh herbs, and other "gourmet" food items. I suppose people think if you receive food stamps, you should be spending them on cheap convenience food, but if this is the fact then don't complain when people with lower incomes have a higher rate of obesity.

Budget Meals, no meat

Your lentil tacos sound delicious! Recipe? Please and thank you.
