Onion Rings

walking might be easier then driving because that place is a clusterF :)

for other crispy, thin style rings, try Frisco. Thin slices in a tangled pile

Onion Rings

Mighty Fine Burgers' onion rings are pretty tasty. I had them at the Arbor Walk location. You can see them make the rings in the glass walled room. Looks like they had some kind of contraption for breading.

I'd consider them thin style with lots of black pepper flakes.

Adam's Extract Red Velvet cake mix

i saw a few boxes in the clearance shelf at one of the HEBs that i frequent - Parmer/35 or Braker/183 or maybe Mueller when I snuck in to see what the hype was about.

Authentic Vietnamese

there are some very authentic vietnamese, home style items at Fresh Tofu in the chinatown center on North Lamar. Caramelized pork belly and whole boiled eggs, bitter melon stuffed with pork and woodear mushroom soup, fried tofus, puddings, jellies, etc.

also check out Lily's Sandwich.. they have lots of authentic snacks, noodles, and rice based dishes. their banh mi are great, too.

Authentic Vietnamese

had the bbh at Tan My last week and i'm sorry to say that i was really disappointed by the broth. it tasted like it was from boullion! it was super dark and salty. i couldn't see the noodles through the broth and there was way too much of it.

have you tried it at Thanh Nhi, popvulture? you can really pick out the pineapple and lemongrass flavors in her broth and she offers sate and stinky fermented shrimp paste to further enhance the pungency.

Desperately in search of guilty pleasure Chinese takeout

T&S Seafood on N. Lamar does some greasy americanized chinese food, in addition to their more authentic items. i've had the beef chow fun and the GT chicken. wonton soup isn't bad either, but sometimes the broth can be pungent.. maybe it's the white pepper?

I also really like the duck fried rice at Ho Ho! it was recommended by someone here. the sweet and sour sauce with the ss shrimp wasn't the neon orange gloop that we were expecting.. pleasantly surprised!

Am I the only one that thinks Rice Bowl Cafe is crazy salty??

Pho Broth

I feel like I'm always promoting this place on here, but Thanh Nhi's pho is tasty when I have a hankering for it.. more often than not though, I get the BBH

there are a few broths she makes that I think are homemade and others that are boullion/powder based.. pho and BBH have the "depth" of homemade.

Pho Dan is good too and I think they start serving like at 7:30 AM!

Austin-How goes the great grocery bag ban experiment?

Not sure if all HEBs stopped recycling. Saw a bin for recycling plastic bags at the Hancock (41st st.) store yesterday!!

Best Spring Rolls?

A chewy wrapper means it's old or old enough to be exposed to air and dry out. A bad spring roll is one that uses iceberg (IMHO).

Try an actual vietnamese restaurant - Thanh Nhi, Tan My, or Lily's Sandwich.

What type of protein do you prefer - boiled shrimp, boiled pork belly, or charbroiled meats? Sometimes the filling dictates the sauce and obviously, the flavor and texture profiles.

Thanh Nhi has an amazing version called nem nuong (1B). a seasoned piece of meat/sausage, crispy cigar, fresh herbs, lettuce, cucumbers, and shredded pickled veggies with a warm, slightly pungent, non-peanut based sauce. add some sambal to the sauce.

Austin-How goes the great grocery bag ban experiment?

the guy who wrote to the paper about the bag ban making him fatter and forcing his family to eat out is an idiot.

i'm proud of austin for taking this step and wish more people would get on board. from time to time, i might forget a bag, especially during an impromptu trip, but appreciate places like Central Market continuing to offer paper bags with handles at no cost. i keep those for gift wrapping and toting things around or just recycle them.

It seems MT market is blatantly disregarding the ban.

Cronuts in Austin...

La Patisserie is making something like a cronut called a crobrio. portion of sales go to urban roots.

A well researched (I hope) Trip Plan from Seattle

not sure if you're going to the south or north Central Market. south is close to uchi, north is practically across the street from uchiko.

the south CM just got a makeover, so that might be the one to see.

Sagra review

I was glad to hear that they found a new location and are able to keep their business going. I last went on their all you can eat mussels Tuesday deal. ($13?) I think you get a choice of red or white sauce. We also had what sounds like the Principessa salad and thought it was delicious and a great value.

your anecdote about the vomit/worm pasta is funny and totally relatable.

will have to check it out again

Does anyone make a better spicy creamed spinach than Stubbs?

I think Hoover's has a jalapeno creamed spinach side. i haven't had it in years, so i don't remember how good or spicy it is.

Falafel

Yes! it's a total dive, but delicious!

the store also sells $1 samosas made by some guy (?) at the register and Phoenicia pita bread, which is hard to find round these parts.

Searsucker is coming to Austin

i'm sorry to say that i'm generally turned off and don't have a desire to go. i know it should be about the food, but i can't get over the concept, the decor, and the cheflebrity.

yeah, Mandarin House has been gone for a while now. i never went to their buffet, but would get take out or delivery. head-on salt & pepper shrimp was pretty good, batter was very light.

Texadelphia location on Guadalupe (the drag) is closing on May 10. I think it was the original before the business sold and expanded. The place was kind of a dump.

I prefer Delaware Subs for cheesesteaks and try to frequent the last remaining stores when i get a hankerin

Favorite Breakfast Tacos

Serranos makes their own tortillas and I recall they were yellowish, flaky, dusty..translucent. i went once and that's all i remember.

El Nuevo Mexico on Anderson Ln and N. Lamar makes their own flour and corn tortillas, as well as totopos.

Jorge's would have fit your bill, i think.. but they're gone.

I need to try Taco Joint.. i've heard it's top quality

Jeffrey's reopened

Eater had a post about it the other day and a reader provided pictures of the menu. the 125 comments are entertaining, too..

it's out of my price range unless i want to eat salads, appetizers, and side dishes. based on the simple descriptions, those items appeal to me the most, anyway.

Shu Shu's

I'd rather order the more authentic chinese dishes at Din Ho and Asia Cafe.

Do either make an exceptional general tso's chicken or something?

Oliver Oyl's description of Shu Shu is right on..

Bagels

+1 for Rockstar bagels.

if you go to their website you'll see all of places you can buy them.

the rosemary & salt variety is pretty tasty. I'll occasionally indulge in their bagel dogs, too.. a beast of a peppery course ground sausage and a thin layer of bagel.

final plans. for next week

we ended up at epicerie when billy's on burnet was too crowded.

i thought the tomato soup tasted a little bit like refrigerator and smelled like spaghetti-o's. the steak portion was well sized and cooked consistently medium rare, but maybe it was sous-vide too long.. the texture was very soft and almost mealy.

also - maybe i'm a cheapskate, but i thought the sandwiches were overpriced considering they were not served with any sides.

i'll give them a few more tries, though, too.

went to Epicerie for dinner last night and checked out their "grocery" items. I was taken aback by how old their bags of coffee were - one dated back to March 4, 2013.

McDonald's Favorites

i think you can buy "Double Filet-O-Fishes" in other cities where it comes with two patties, one cheese, and tartar sauce.

Filet-O-Fishes and orange Hi-C drink reminds me of my childhood and remains one of the few items I get at McDs when nostalgia calls or I'm on a road trip!
