D Magazine 52 things to do as a Dallasite

This is a fun list. I did read the other day that they had to do a partial retraction because the picture they used for the Bob Armstrong dip for the article or the website was actually taken at Matt's and not Mattitos. Regardless, both are good.

Cake Balls

I see cake balls everywhere now. I haven't tried Zen but I have tried them from the Cupcakery in Dallas and Patty Cakes in Grapevine. Both are pretty good.

Trader Joe's in Dallas?

I agree with Chowhound needing a "like" button. I check this thread every once in a while and would love to hear a TJ announcement.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

I agree on Nonna. I don't get the excitement. I just read a bunch of celebrities went there over the Superbowl weekend and thought that it was somewhat of a waste with all the other great restaruants in town. But then again lots of people love Nonna....

Barbecue in Dallas?

I am a Smoke fan as well and would definitely recommend it to an out of towner. I also heard the other day that they have a good weekend breakfast/brunch. I hope to check it out soon. I heard there was an eggs benedict made with pulled pork.

Dallas Steakhouse, but not a chain

Hope you like Al's, it is a favorite of ours.

I feel like most of the steakhouses in the Dallas area are generally similar but few of them chains in the sense of more than 2 or 3 locations. Perry's is also a good choice; although not a traditional steakhouse per se Reata in Fort Worth is good; but you can't go wrong with Al's or really Bob's, III Forks or Del Friscos.

Cyclone Anaya's - Addison

I am not a Cyclone Anaya's fan. People I know from Houston swear by it, but I just don't get. I have given the one on Oak Lawn a number of chances and am just not a fan. Up in the Addison area, I like the Blue Goose just south of Beltline on Midway, I also like Carolina's off 190 and Rosemeade and am excited to try to new Mexican restaurant going in the old Two Rows space on the Tollroad.

[DFW] Nonna: I surrender

Dalaimama - I agree with your take. Amore and Adlemos are great.

I am a little bit in the ambivalent category to Nonna. I think i got caught up in the hype of Nonna. Kind of like with movies when you expect nothing, you can be pleasantly surprised, and when you expect the moon, you are often disappointed. I have expected too much from my visits to Nonna. It is fine, but I am not in the "love" crowd, I am in the it is good every once in a while crowd.

Best Fajitas in Dallas?

Not sure about the best, but I had the fajitas at La Hacienda in Frisco recently and was very pleasantly surprised. They may not be the best, but they were darn good.

(DFW) Grapevine recs

Everyone seems to have their own opinions, my 4 would be Babe's, La Hacienda, Tolberts, and Joe's Crab Shack.

Babe's - Great restaurant all around.
La Hacienda - A Texas feel and some good fajitas, they have a family style fajita platter that is good for small groups.
Tolberts- Great feel, and neat area
Joes - Total chain, but great food. I feel like Joes is a little cheesy chain restaurant but it was mentioned above so I feel validated in publicly expressing how much I like it.

Awesome Malaysian Foods

Another place to look for Malaysian food is Bengal Coast. It is in the building with Steel and next to Silver Fox on Oak Lawn.

After a trip to Singapore, we had cravings for some of the foods and flavors we had while on the Malaysian pensiula. Bengal Coast is definitely Americanized and has some thai and indian dishes as well. Think PF Changs/Pei Wei is to Chinese what Bengal Coast is to Malaysian food.

Best Burger in Dallas???

I vote for Twisted Root for thick burger and Burger House for thin burger. I consider them two totally different genres.

Texan foodie spots? Help needed from the UK!

Some of the off the beaten path North Texas places I would recommend are ...

Clark's BBQ in Tioga, TX,
Babe's Chicken in Roanoke, TX,
the Czech Stop in West, TX,
County Line BBQ- a few locations, i prefer the ones outside of Austin.

All have great feels to them and history. I am sure they all have websites or reviews you can check out.

Best Restaurant in Fort Worth?

I really like Reata but haven't been there many times and never to their old location.

The best I have been to in FW is Lonesome Dove, Tim love place in the stockyards. It is ridiculously good. Their beef tenderloin just melts in your mouth. I know Tim Love is all the rage, and truthfully I thought it was getting way overhyped and then went their for the first time last year and was very very impressed. If you are going to one restaurant in Fort Worth, I would say that Lonesome Dove should be your place.

Best Fried Chicken in Dallas?

J.R. - That seems to be my understanding as well. I think I actually heard that Bubbas owns their own building there on Hillcrest, but that could ust be a rumor too. I know the question in Dallas, but I think the Babe's in Roanoke is worth the drive out there. It is the orginal Babes and has a more limited menu but is a really neat place and streetscape, makes you feel like you are far away from urban dallas (which you are). Brothers is great, but it is better for takeout, not a lot of seating.
