Things you want to bake
I don't remember what I was originally making now, but whatever it was, it didn't turn out (last Christmas). In last minute desperation, I made a tart shell, poured on a jar of Trader Joe's salted caramel sauce, then ganache and sprinkled it with chopped almonds. It was soooooo good.
What are you baking these days? May 2012
Not exactly baking, but we spent the afternoon picking strawberries, so I made jam today. And then I threw a loaf of bread in the bread machine to be ready for breakfast. Tomorrow will be a strawberry tart and strawberry turnovers.

I'm jealous - my son asked me to make some cookies for his class's last day party, but his school has a no homemade baked goods policy.
Is not tipping illegal?
Just because they put it in writing, it's true? I think not. Think gravel trucks that have a "not responsible for broken windshield" or any establishment that displays a "not responsible for accidents". Both in fact are responsible. I guess they just think maybe you're dumb enough to believe them and not sue if they cause you harm.
What foods do you refuse to eat?
When my oldest child was 2, he ran out of our office where he was unsupervised on the computer ( yes, I'm an awful parent) and said, "Soylent Green is people!". To this day, I have no idea what he was doing in there.
Teaching chow pups moderation
One of my pups is a chip off the old chow block. He spends a great deal of time thinking about what he'll be eating next. He likes to cook and bake with me and even reads cookbooks and food magazines. He's actually brought me recipes on several occasions that he wants to try. In a lot of ways, this is really great, but how do you teach moderation without creating food "issues". He's a lot like my mom was at the same age (he's 5) and my grandmother turned her into a fat kid probably in part by making an issue of everything she ate. He ice skates and spends a lot of time outdoors, so activity isn't an issue, but it wasn't with her either. Any words of wisdom?
Angel food cake
Not an answer to your question, but I remember my grandmother stopping when we were in the neighboring town to buy Hospitality brand angel food cake mix. She said it was good, but that no other brand was. And most things she baked from scratch. She gave me one too. I remember liking it, but that was before I baked a lot. But I like my angel food cake plain served with either strawberries or orange sherbet.
Nine Cuisines, One Dish Each
I would love that sweet and sour sauce recipe if you're willing to share. I'm totally intrigued. (I make my own non-orange as well.)
Is there a scientist in the house?
His project doesn't really have a due date since it's not for credit, but the science fair is Wednesday. I got him the McGee book at the library, and he found and read the curdling information, but I think too much more will be over his head. (not because he's not smart enough - he is, but science isn't on the standardize tests, so they don't teach a lot of it to second graders. So he doesn't really have a lot of background knowledge). I'm beginning to see why second graders don't generally contribute to the science fair. But I do like your idea. I may get him some litmus paper to experiment with over the summer.
Homemade Marshmallows
I have done it. Your friend is a party pooper. It is fun and the results are wonderful. I suggest you not share with her.
Is there a scientist in the house?
He chose the project and performed the experiment. He is writing the report. He is reading what I give him, but highlighting what he feels is important. he is a second grader after all. He has done research, but only because the enrichment kids in his class did a special project last year. Most did not. I don't think helping him gather information is too much. Especially because the project is optional and won't be graded or judged. And if I take him to the library, I have to take my other two, smaller kids too. Which I do, just not tomorrow. My intention is to give him the book but let him find the answer. I won't help so much when he is a fourth grader and is graded/judged on his entry.
Is there a scientist in the house?
Thank you. I will take another trip to the library tomorrow while he's at school. It's one half gallon milk, 1/4 cup lemon juice. Heat milk to 176 degrees F, add lemon juice, watch curdle, strain.
Is there a scientist in the house?
My second grader is doing his science fair project on curdling. We made paneer and then followed the same process with lactose free milk. Our hypothesis was that with no lactose to convert to lactic acid, the milk would not separate. However, it did. Is this because of the carrageenan and guar gum they add to the lactaid?
"Kids Say the Darndest Things" about Food, Cooking, etc.: Plse Add Your Funny Experiences!
My 2 year old always introduces me with, "This is my friend, Mommy. She makes supper". And I don't know if this is related in her mind or not, but any time she wants to get rid of me, she tells me I need to go make supper.
When do ethics come to play in your dining decision?
I bought some this year after the Girl Scouts was attacked by a local crackpot politician. Conversely, I don't buy hot dogs from the boy scouts when they're in front of the home improvement store.
The Leftovers That Didn't Make It
Did you have to say corn on the cob? It's March for Pete's sake. (I'm having food spring fever now, thank you very much).
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
I googled roasted white chocolate and found an article from Food and Wine (hello, Gail) with instructions from 2008. I'd never heard of it before, but it sounds pretty tasty although not as original as I previously thought. I happen to have a bag of Trader Joe's white chocolate chips and am wondering if they would be considered "good" white chocolate.
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
Yep, on Top Chef nights, Andy whatever needs to be replaced by The Grayson and Fabio Show. They need to cook something while they discuss the show.
I know its your Birthday, but......
I think you should tell him honestly what your thoughts are. If he really is that good hearted, he would want to know that he is in danger of alienating friends. Especially if any included is less financially secure. In that case, it's not only rude, but inconsiderate.
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 1 - Ep. #16 - 02/22/12 (Spoilers)
Bella, I thought I posted this, but either I somehow didn't (there've been a lot of late nights with sick kids lately so who knows) or I got deleted for some reason, but in this article, it states that her mom is her proudest fan. Also that she feels she has been fairly portrayed. That was in January. I wonder if she still feels that way.

How Waiters Read Your Table - WSJ
My girlfriends and I always drank too much with lunch and way overtipped because it was easier than doing the math tipsy. (back when I had extra time and money instead of children). But I think we'd all waited tables at some point too, which I think makes one a better tipper.

Personality wise, Sarah reminds me of a woman I know who came from a very disadvantaged background. Her single, poor, alcoholic mother barely noticed her. This lady is also very driven and has basically always done as she's pleased. She's very successful but not very likeable. Not saying this is the case with Sarah, but it's another possibility. Or maybe she's very privileged and didn't need an education to fall back on should she ever chop off a hand or something. Or maybe her parents couldn't stand her anymore and just wanted her to leave.
Things you want to try making
I definately will. I'll probably wait until I have until I have guests though. The two main reasons I haven't yet are that there's always something else I want to make and second, if I make them, I will eat them. All.
What are you baking these days? February 2012, part deux! [old]
I haven't made the lemon. I usually stick to maida heatter's east 62nd street lemon or ina's lemon yogurt. Have you made the other? Do you recomend it? One of my boys requests lemon cake for his birthdays so if it's great, I'd love to hear about it.
What non-food/non-traditional food items did you eat as a kid?
Play doh of course. And I think one of my little preschool friends may have actually had pica. She ate rocks all the time. But she was very discerning. She preferred smooth ones with stripes.
