Garlic and Pepper Thai in Tuckahoe still open?

Think of the irony with this one. The food there now is strict Vietnamese and healthy. Very good. Went for lunch. But again, the location will kill them. Then you have Dean at Ole Stone Mill with his McDonalds line cook, Michael Gallo, with one of the most beautiful locations and plenty of parking. It's a shame they don't give up the space to someone that wants to take the place serious (still laugh when I see the re-runs of Kitchen Nightmares). Garlic & Pepper was OK but it was too much fried food. And yes, it does still feel like you're in a bowling alley.

Just for the record though. The place did well 20+ years ago when it was a burger and beer joint. Used to be a mixed crowd between 17 and up. Ahh the old days when the NYS drivers license had no picture... :)

TriState Region Restaurants Feeling the Economic Heat?

Can someone tell me why restaurants are so afraid to bring back the "happy hour" programs? Maybe glasses of house wine for 4 or 5 bucks. Half priced mixed drinks. Special reduced menus? Conn. is full of restaurants that offer half priced bottles on certain nights. Someone should create a website geared just for restaurants that are offering similar values.

Stopped off in Tuckahoe recently for an event at the Generoso Pope Foundation and had a few glasses of wine at The Tap House. The fact that every 3rd or 4th glass isn't "on the house" is nuts with the economy the way it is. After paying the check I asked why they didn't have such a policy, the barmaid said that the owners feel "if a customer wants a drink, they'll pay for it". Guess it explains why I was the only patron at the bar.

At the very least, we should start a thread posting restaurants that have "economy friendly" nights. Anyone?

How do I thicken my soup?

Very funny bunch of posts.

Egg yolks coagulate at 65C. Need to keep them under 147F or so to keep from cooking. At 190F, you've got egg drop soup. Cornstarch adds flavor and that makes no sense. Anyone think of Xanthem? (available at any health food store or Chinese market) No flavor kids! Rice was funny too. Roux in to a healthy soup?

So sick of overpriced Westchester!

You're dead on with your review. But are you writing as if you're speaking about someone else? Did you go or is there another jfood? No offense here.

I'm not impressed with anything in Norwalk. It's a young college kid hang-out.

Finding Great Steaks in Westchester

Guess this also explains the demise of Boulder Creek Steakhouse. They have a sign that says they're renovating but the location is already deleted from their website. They actually used to hang a sign on the building that said "immediate seating always available!". I guess unlike The Cheesecake Factory with a 2 hour wait. Now that was a smart marketing plan.

BOE@324, White Plains closes...

What a shame. They poured a ton of money in to this place. The downstairs wine cellar room was monumental. Guess even when you have money to burn, if the food ain't great, customers won't take the bait.

Best Pizza in Westchester (again)

My Dad lives in New Haven and learned that Frank Pepe is opening the old Ricky's Seafood on Central Avenue in Yonkers. Think this post may soon lay this topic to rest?

So sick of overpriced Westchester!

Dolores-

Tried Bao on Central Avenue a while back and they were closed! Any idea what happened? Did they re-open?

Belle Havana in Yonkers (Ex Chartreuse)

What happened to Chartreuse? Went to X2O and stopped off at the new place. One of the customers said the owner is working on a second location that may bring the Chartreuse energy back to lower Yonkers. Keeping my fingers crossed. Was there after they pulled off the "Excellent" review.

"42" in White Plains -- review

I'm a retired attorney in White Plains and got hammered on my bill and will go back anyway. The view is out of control and the rib eye was outstanding. My sister is in the business and said that even at $75, it's a better value than any other steak house in Westchester. Can someone talk to them about the drink prices though?

Yonkers Raceway dining??

Red Meat...

Just saw your listing for 1899 Tavern. You work for them? My sister is a sales rep for Sysco that sells them everything. They don't serve Prime meat. Who told you this? And, who voted them best steakhouse? Yonkers Chamber of Commerce? The last one they voted "best" was Boulder Creek that just closed. They serve drinks through "hoses" that are fed from the basement. Are you for real with this? Also, think there's a reason they're never crowded and open only on the weekend?
