Origins of gyro-NYT
Why not? What's so bad about wheat? Most places serving meatloaf add bread crumbs, you wouldn't eat that either?
Native Corn
It's global warming, not local warming...changing weather patterns lead to different dynamics in different regions.
Barbour's Farm Market in Newton
It was open one day last week when I drove by. Not much to it anymore, just some flowers from what I noticed. When I was a kid it was a full-on farm stand.
BBQ Supplies in Boston
Their brands change frequently. They used to carry Maple Leaf , which is a far better lump than these other brands, but is no longer imported from Canada.
Frozen Sushi?
Actually not all Japanese eat sushi, and most doctors in Japan offer the same guidance as we do, according to my Japanese friends.
Native Corn
Pretty early, and the lack of sunshine isn't promising for the sugar production needed for good sweet corn. Hopefully we 'll get some better weather and the later harvests will be better.
market basket strength/weakness?
Got some prociutto de parma at MB last week for $10 a pound LESS than WF, right across the street, was selling it for.
What is happening to my cucumbers?
It is essential that you never touch the leaves when they are wet. Don't know if that is your problem, but something to keep in mind.
PG BBQ Beach Party this weekend
Will never, ever, ever go to another PG event. I can barely get past the insipidness and hyperbole (let alone the outright lies) that the TV show oozes. The overhyped and overpriced events have always left me feeling violated.
Decent Lamb Chops- not to break the bank-NAtick
Actually across and up the street from Lowe's. A mile or so from Home Depot. Can't vouch for the Aegean's food, I was underwhelmed on two visits and have not been back.
How about one of the Brazilian places along rt 9 or in Framingham Center?
Scotch Bonnet Chile Source
I see them pretty rtegularly at Market Basket and Stop and Shop. Pretty sure Russo's has them most of the time.
Lobster prices
$5.99 at Market Basket this morning. Didn't buy any and didn't ask if hard-shelled. Down from $6.99 last week (Bellingham location).
Boston Hound in Metrowest: Stop the Chain Restaurant Madness
i'm with you on that. I want to like Big Fresh, but I really don't. Bland and overpriced.
What's your favorite hot sauce?
I did, but every time I mention it in a post I get pooh-poohed that only the one with the rooster is the real deal. Was at a grocery in Chinatown (Boston) the other day and saw 3 or 4 different brands.
pizza in waltham
Franco's, on the upper end of Moody St makes very good NY style pizza and is by far my Waltham favorite. Another place which used to be good, but I have not been in years, is Franca's Wood Fired Pizza, on Charles st right up near Moody.
PRIME Steaks @ Costco
As many of the above posts reference, individual steaks are not graded, but come from a graded beast. Some Choice will be better than some Prime.
PRIME Steaks @ Costco
I recently loaded up on ribeye on sale at Hilltop. Looked fantastic, tasted mediocre. Iw as definitely disappointed. To me the expression "you get what you pay for" is a total copout, and completely lacking a basis in reality, but in this case it was true.
Who has the best fried calamari in the Boston area?
Can't say it is "the best", but Daily Catch does a really nice version. Kind of a corn mealish batter, so not as light as some, but a little crispy and a nice flavor. Personally, I have had Cheesecake Factory's version and found it bland, except for the overly salty sauces they serve with it. I wouldn't even order CF's again.
Good soft serve ice cream?
Dairy Joy is so obscenely overpriced I refuse to go there on principal.
PRIME Steaks @ Costco
Meat is graded by the steer, not by visual inspection of the cuts. Very often lesser grades are actually better meat.
China Pearl Dim Sum this morning
Sounds good. Had that same mushroom item at Empire Garden last week.
For what it's worth, I've never had anything that wasn't "fresh" at any of the Chinatown dim sum venues, ever, at any time in my life.
Where to find beef ribs?
That is Framingham, not Natick. They do not have beef ribs, unless that changed very recently. THere is nothing inauthentic about beef ribs, but as another poster suggested they tend to be a Texas specialty. I did have great ones in Marietta, GA once.
James Hook & Co. owners selling the property
Well, they have publicly said they plan on keeping the business going. It is not inconceivable that they would sell to a developer who would use the lot more efficiently, possibly rebuilding and inluding space for their operation (ground floor operation with office or mixed use space above). Short of that , business people don't typically look to unload "their most attractive asset" when prices are at a 15 year low and interest rates are historically low.
James Hook & Co. owners selling the property
Agreed on the inefficiency. Slow economy motivating sale of prime real estate? I doubt that. Price of lobster probably not a factor either, as they are talking about a leaseback and leaving the store in place.
Product Marketing on CHOW (split from General Chowhounding Topics board)
I would argue that Chowhound does features on Bison because it is trendy, not the other way around.
Still don't see even ancedotal evidence that a blog hyping Muir Glen means that Muir Glen is doing viral marketing. They could do NO marketing and still be listed on a blog as a choice product.
Roche Bros. Markets
Better info, but again, they price differently in their different stores. I believe the Star in Medway sells Teddie for $2.79 but I haven't shopped there recently. You could also find items that go the opposite way too. Compare ice cream prices for example--lower at Star than RB
BTW, Teddie is $2.50 at Market Basket.
