Puerto Rican? Mofongo?

An enthusiastic 2nd for Izzy's!

Best Onion Rings and Strings?

I agree with the Bartley's rec. If I recall correctly, the ones at Flat Patties are also good.

What is going on with the Lord Hobo?

Walked by there today and there were guys around working on the place. I asked if they knew of an opening date, and one guy told me that they are hoping to do so in about two weeks.

Sheep's milk cheese

I just bought a Sheep's Milk gouda from Trader Joes and I like it.

I too like the dry and sharp sheep cheeses, especially pecorino.

Nut free protein

Since I doubt a fridge is handy, does the school provide things like milk and yogurt for purchase? Dairy in general is high in protein.

Does she like eggs? I think a hardboiled egg would hold up in a lunch bag.

Restaurants with humanely raised meat and poultry?

Glad you liked it! EVOO is one of my favorite places....which reminds me, I need to get there for some seasonal nosh before the summer is out!

Restaurants with humanely raised meat and poultry?

3 options that come to mind readily, all w/ good reviews. These restaurants are focused on (for the most part) local, naturally-raised/farmed ingredients:

-----
EVOO Restaurant
350 Third Street, Cambridge, MA 02143

T.W. Food
377A Walden St, Cambridge, MA 02138

Craigie on Main
853 Main Street, Cambridge, MA 02139

Good eats near Harvard Square area? Please recommend some of your yummy faves

EVOO is just a ten minute walk from Harvard Square and has a great prix-fixe menu option at $35. Three courses and the food, which focuses on local, seasonal ingredients, is fantastic. It is dinner only. If you have a few extra $ consider the wine parings with your dinner for an extra $15, which works out to $5/drink which is pretty darn good IMO.

Food and restaurant jokes.

Thanks! As it turns out, there is one place where a vegetable can grab a drink:

The Salad Bar!

Food and restaurant jokes.

A mushroom walks into a bar. The bartender sees him and yells "GET OUT!! We don't serve your kind here".

The mushroom says "Why not? I'm a fungi"

Kirkland Cafe - Will it Reopen?

I live down the street from the Kirkland. Its been in its present state for at least a year. At one point, they said "six months", but that was way more than six months ago.

From having been in there, I can say that the place was in need of a major facelift, so maybe they ran into more problems than they anticipated? Economic downturn slowed things down? I'll see if I can find out more from neighbors in the know.

No difference with organic food

I'm not saying that all big agribussiness is bad, only that some organic faming s providing an essential service by keeping genetic diversity alive.

No difference with organic food

Absolutely. Monocropping a.k.a "big agriculture" threatens biodiversity, which threatens the long-term survival of a given type of plant. I could get more scientific than that, but I don't want to get myself going :)

SummerTime! Fresh Corn on the cob! What do you put on it?

To my taste buds, good fresh corn off the cob needs no help. If I am in the mood, a little herb salt & pepper. I usually boil it (no grill) but I do enjoy that version especially when camping.

On Average, how often do you eat fish?

I have cut wayyy back on my fish intake for environmental reasons. I can find sustainable alternatives to things like farmed shrimp and other fish, but they are more expensive so I eat less of them than I used to. So, I probably went from having fish 5-6X/week to about 3x/week.

Next year I hope to join my local CSF so that will up my intake, at least for the summer.

condimental

Hmm....I have been known to eat good mustard out of the jar while making a sandwich.
Definitely salsa.
Hummus is not so much a dip/spread for me but an entire food group, so this as well.
Also, red pepper jelly, apple butter and pumpkin butter.
OH and Gomasio (sesame seeds with sea salt)

The best kitchen product ad ever- Slap Chop!

No, you're right he was not (RIP Billy). I don't know if this guy should get cast in more commercials, only that like Billy Mays he has a distinct personality that seems to make people pay attention.

I guess he does come off kind of sleazy, though....I can picture him using strange pick up lines involving culinary instruments and cleaning cloths...*shudder*.

The best kitchen product ad ever- Slap Chop!

Is that Vince from the Sham-Wow! commercials? Maybe he will inherit Billy May's title of America's most ubiquitous hawker.

Great video!

No difference with organic food

Personally, I don't buy organic food for the nutritional difference, although if they are better that's great. I buy mostly organic food for 2 reasons:

1) Pesticides, herbicides and fungicides and especially chemical fertilizers don't just affect the foods they are used on, they impact the environment as well. For example, Oceanic "Dead Zones" are largely caused by the runoff of chemical fertilizers leading to eutrophication>algal blooms.

2)The health impacts of foods containing pesticides might be debatable, but I'd rather lower my risk if I can.

Concern Grows About Virulent NE Crop Disease

Oh, I agree with you, judicious use is very important. I think I was responding more to some of the comments to the article on boston.com ("live by organic, die by organic" was one of them). Fungicides, although not as potentially hazardous to humans as some pesticides/herbicides, should still be used in a way that will maximize their effect and not be seen as a panacea, IMHO.

It seems unlikely that this will be as big of a problem next year, as this wet weather we are having here is in sync with the fact that last year had a somewhat strong La Nina effect in the South Pacific which leads to wet, cool weather hear.

It seems that this year is shaping up toward more El Nino conditions which means that we will likely have hotter, drier weather hear next year.

Concern Grows About Virulent NE Crop Disease

This is a quandary that is compounded by the fact that using fungicide has the potential to help develop "super" fungal diseases that will resist the "cure". In a way.

I too love tomatoes and am quite sad at the poor state of my own tomato plants this year (I am in MA).

Sandwich preference as predictor of personality

Hey, Where's the beef?

Seriously, no roast beef? I mean, they include seafood salad, which is, IMHO, not as common.

I would ask why they didn't include PB&J, but there (usually) isn't any mayo in that sandwich and seeing as this is sponsored by Hellman's...well, no big surprise.

This was rather fun so thanks for sharing! I couldn't decide between turkey and a BLT, although I don't like mayo on my turkey sandwiches. I guess that makes me a free-thinker who maintains high moral ground at all times. Interesting.

Desk Snacks

I don't have a desk anymore (laid off-stupid economy) but I would always take with me a Nature Valley granola bar (Roasted Almond, usually) for breakfast @ work.

For snacks, I like something that mixes protein in for satiety. A couple of Trader Joe's PB-filled pretzels, apples with PB, etc.

For a treat, I really like Corn Nuts (Chile Picante!) or a little bowl of wonton soup from the Chinese restaurant down the street. If I wanted something sweet I might get a fresh Rice Krispie treat from the local bakery. Now, though, I have enough time to make my own!

Help a relocating San Francisco hound pick a neighborhood

I am also a little biased, but I like the Inman Square area/Mid-Cambridge. I live one block from Savenor's (for meat) and several good restaurants (Dali-tapas, Kebab Factory-Indian, EVOO, upscale locally-focused american). I can walk 10 minutes to Harvard Square for the red line or about 15 minutes to Central Square for the red line. Bus stations are close by as well.

For organic, in-season food I highly suggest getting a weekly box from Boston Organics. My mom and I have been getting a small 2/3 vegetable box for years now and hardly ever buy produce anymore (unless we need a few extra apples or need something specific). The quality of their produce has always been great and they are happy to compensate you if you feel something was not quite right (although we have never had to do this). They focus on local produce whenever possible. I have certainly expanded my vegetable repertoire because of some of the things we get in our box. Anyway, I don't work for them or anything but really do like the service.

Oh, and welcome to the area!!

Eggplant a la parmigiana failure - salting problem?

As you have guessed, the problem you had is a salting one. To get the eggplant to release its water before cooking, sprinkle both sides of every slice with salt and put them on paper towels or in a colander and bowl. Let them sit about a half hour and they should be good to go.

I don't know about zucchini (I prefer mine unadorned), but I do use an egg wash to make the breadcrumbs stick. From there you can either fry or bake...I prefer to bake but whatever floats your boat.

chocolate chip cookies

Some of the best cookies I have had are actually found in a grocery store: the Johnny's Foodmaster on beacon st in Somerville. They have these "Gourmet Chocolate Chunk" cookies in their bakery section that I think are really yummy. These are NOT the ones in the tubs, but in plastic bags with the foil twist-ties. Its about 3.50 for 8 (I think, maybe more tho) cookies.

What was the story in Jimmy's Harborside?

My guess is that property (especially any of a good size) is pretty darned expensive in that area. Legals is a successful chain with $ to open up new places. An independent place would find it hard to compete, cash-wise.

Kind of stinks, but hey...look on the bright side. At least its not an Applebees/Chilis/TGI Friday's!

Film & TV: Favorite Fictional Food & Drink?

That would be Gagh, a dish of (usually live) serpent eels

What do YOU consider "empty calories"?

Ditto on the Lipton Sides for backpacking...not bad and cheaper than Mountain House/Backpackers Pantry.

And to make this relevant...even my mom, who would normally never touch instant-type foods as they are "junk" agrees that they are wonderful when a kitchen is 5,000 feet down and many miles away.

Film & TV: Favorite Fictional Food & Drink?

Caf Pow-Abby's favorite drink on NCIS
Blue Milk- Star Wars (Episode IV)]
Miruvor- Lord of The Rings (a magical Elf-cordial)
Tomacco- The Simpsons...don't look at me, I'm on Sugar Busters!
Tava Bread- Sword of Truth series, similar to Injera in that it is used as a vehicle for other items
Muja fruit, Nerf (meat)- Star Wars again, which has a ton more but those ones come to mind first
Pizza the Hutt- Spaceballs (He's so delicious!) and even tho its not a food, PerriAir
Soma-Brave New World

...aaaand I've just outed myself as a GIANT GEEK :)
