How do you like your oatmeal?

Maple syrup and pumpkin pie spices, frozen "harvest" fruit stirred in (Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries), a puddle of milk and sugar and melted butter, eons ago in school we'd put peanut butter M&Ms in too, the melting candy coating making a rainbow in the oats and now I still like a scoop of peanut butter and a drizzle of maple syrup on top sometimes.

Pho Outside of Chinatown (Honolulu)

Cuu long still? I think their food went way downhill over the past couple years. I still go to Pho Viet on Moanalua past St. Elizabeth in Aiea.

Chicken of the Sea Crab Meat

Crabcakes? probably not. You could make a hot crab dip though, mix in cream cheese, chives, mayo, a little cayenne, breadcrumbs on top if that floats your boat and serve with mini-toast.

Pacific Aviation Museum cafe

yea. I retract my previous statement. I was given bad gouge, that it'd still be Firehouse inside but they had "steak out" plates. Mea culpa. I haven't bothered with the steak plates though.

How/Why did you pick your screen name?

what is this "aim" that you speak of?? :P

Pacific Aviation Museum cafe

no, steak out is separate from firehouse. It still exists.

How/Why did you pick your screen name?

Haole is a derogatory word for white folks here in Hawaii. I've heard a couple explanations of what it meant one being without breath, either that we were dead (ghosts) or didn't kiss in the manner the Hawaiians used to ("sharing" their breath). But mainly it's because
my husband always gives me a hard time about being haole since he is actually from here and isn't white.

The frozen fries and the styrofoam in the microwave make me cringe

Did Mom + Dad influence your cooking? If so, did each do it differently?

No, thank God. My mother won't eat a steak unless it's well done which I feel is an insult to the animal; I eat mine just walked past the grill to knock the chill off and get a little kiawe taste. I cook a lot of Vietnamese & Thai, I dabble in mediterranean and French. I was raised
on fried potatoes with onions (German style), maybe a cheesecake once in a blue moon,
chicken divan (as a point of reference Paula Deen made it on her show....), and.. Well. I remember dried spices, recipes being turned down because they had "too much going on" and all the while I was thinking about Anthony Bourdain describing gocery shelf herbs as pencil shavings. I treasured escaping to my sister's where we ate Thai food, pizza with lamb sausage and had plenty of wine and coffee. Oh and Dean and Deluca's was
merely a cab ride away. I remember my father's cooking. He madebeer battered onion rings (his grandparents owned a bar), Greek salads, pizza with ricotta and broccoli rabe. Oh, and crabcakes. Amazing blue crab Maryland crabcakes. I think for a time he even worked on a crab boat but that was long before my time. I still look for crabcakes like the ones he made.

My favorite memory and influence from my Dad is baking, not cooking. We baked breads and desserts from the Tassajara Bread book. I remember him teaching me to knead the dough, how to incorporate the ingrediants without overmixing. Zen lessons over zen bread. He was an amazing old dude.

Yes, thank god there's no pre-made pizza or nachos with cheese that is basically yellow plastic.

'fess up, "i'm a hog when it comes to eating ____ ."

Anything with PB and chocolate. I recently found Whole Foods sells Chocolate PB bon bons.. Um, yeah. Quelle horreur for my diet. The PB thing goes back to even when I was a kid, I think I was like 3 and made off with a jar of PB and proceeded to try to eat the whole thing in a sitting.
Sushi. My husband and I ALWAYS have eyes bigger than our stomaches and order the left side of the menu.. and even though I'm full I'll just keep eating because it's that good
Carne fries. Yup, the San Diego treat. I love em, and they apparently love my hips.. cos they're still there..

I walk here for lunch from work! They've had a change of staff recently. It's not necessarily better or worse, just different. The breakfast has gone by the wayside, unfortunate because it was my favorite. Their omelets were great back in the day, now they're not so hot. I guess no one typically orders them because they open later now. They're a little pricey being geared towards the tourists but the food is pretty decent considering the only other option for me is Subway. Gag me with a stick, I'll fork out a couple extra dollars to avoid that nastiness. I like the mahimahi and the teri steak. Nothing terribly original on the menu but you have to think about their target audience. Their portions are pretty big. The wait can be a little long but it is worth the wait. The ambiance is cool and the workers are pretty outgoing. The people watching is pretty good here. Tourists never cease to amaze me.

Pineapple Room by Alan Wong

I was contemplating a visit to Pineapple. I lost my dinner partner to an extended overseas stay.. I don't feel so bad about PR solo..

Oahu on the "less fancy" side

The "Marketplace grocery" you referenced is Kalapawai; there are two, one in Kailua and one towards Lanikai.

NYC 'hound eats across Oahu (long) report (link to pics)

Hell, I've lived here for 5 years and still haven't been to a luau.
Good coffee is available in Kailua at Morning Brew and sometimes in town at Fresh Cafe.
Lack of green vegetables- IT'S AN ISLAND. Vegetables are perishable. Easier to ship rice than asparagus.

Reference Buzz's the bread is bad, it always has been. It tastes like that bad pre-packaged dough...

Pinky's is a place to get poopy-faced, not eat. Even the shrimp on the bloody marys aren't good.

Boots n Kimos is good but the savory breakfasts are a little better IMO. Fried rice, portuguese sausage and over easy eggs. Also if you're back in Kailua for breakfast try Cinnamon's for Eggs Benedict.

Next time also you should check out some pho spots, even Bale for Vietnamese sandwiches..

And thanks for noting Thang coffee, I'm gonna go try some!

I've been thinking about going here.. now I'm plotting for this weekend! :P

Looking for family-friendly restaurants in Kauai

Brick Oven Pizza..
5492 Koloa Rd
Koloa, HI 96756
Kids won't think it's weird but parents will appreciate it being baked on a brick hearth with some tasty toppings..

Guacamole -- What's in yours??

Keeping it simple with avo, cumin, lime (lots), jalapeno, red onion and tons of cilantro.

FAST RESPONSE NEEDED: Epic or Indigo

Epic, go for prix fixe. Indigo gets loud & stupid, they try hard on the menu but sometimes miss the mark. Epic is just that, Epic.

OK-next question-Who has best Poke on Oahu?

I like Tamura's too.

Alan Wong or La Mer (one night in Oahu)

I vote Alan Wong. You can get good French food somewhere else, you can't get AW anywhere else..

where to eat in oahu?

Only one thing to do, goto Kauai and eat at Hamura's. mmmm, saimin..

What was your favourite childhood concoction, which you now think is disgusting?

I used to eat cream cheese & green olive sandwiches all the time. Also fluffernutters. And canned ravioli. All of these still sound edible to me but I am incubating a baby so um.. I have been eating kind of strange things lately.

I don't think I could survive the above mentioned "suicidal swamp juice." I think I have a headache just from thinking about all that sugar.

I used to eat baked beans and hot sauce on a tortilla too.. It was kind of an interesting sweet/hot combo. This one doesn't sound quite so appealing now.

I had Bosco too growing up on the East Coast.. but Hershey's always won out for flavor and actually resembling a chocolate syrup.
