Yacht Chef looking for best markets/gourmet shops/wine shops....
Well thank you to everyone for the help. I hit up Surfas yesterday and was in heaven. All those little things I've been wanting to stock the galley with were there. I have never seen a place with more than one type of Pimenton, Surfas had 5. I love it. Although they did not have fresh foie, sevruga caviar or truffles, they had everything else I needed and more. I am going to all the seafood spots that were mentioned tomorrow to see what they have to offer. I should have known the Japanese markets have the best fish. It's like that in Seattle as well. On another note, I found a great source for oysters in Redondo. On the pier is a fresh seafood market with 25 different oysters 10 types of clams as well as other species. I was on my bike but I decided a dozen bivalves and a Carta Blanca were in order. Awesome.

oh yeah, I went to Whole Foods on Lincoln and the seafood department SUCKS! Dead mussels, farm raised salmon, frozen scallops and shrimp. Any spectacular seafood markets out there. Particularly local, whole fish and shellfish. How 'bout a good selection of oysters.

I am a yacht chef who just arrived in LA on our way down to Newport Beach. We will be in MDR for 2 weeks. As you can imagine my boss is a fan of the finer things; foie, truffles, caviar, kobe, 1st growth Bordeaux etc. Can anyone tell me some of their favorite markets in the area that I could find these high end items. I am also looking for great farmers markets that have unique local produce. Wine shops with mature Bordeaux and Burgundy is also something I am looking for.
Something like a Dean and Deluca or comparable would be great.
Oh yeah, any cheap eats around MDR that anyone recommends would be great while we're at it!! Thanks so much....
Alright Ft. Lauderdale, lets hear about some cheap(er) eats!
Don't forget, channel 10 sells airtime. Those health violations are bogus(mostly). The local health department officials know as much about food production as I know about rocket science. Can you tell I have had issues with them in the past?!
Thank you for the info on the diners. I went to school in NY and also love the diners. Best late night food around! Those greeks know how to run diners thats for sure.
I worked at an Outback Steakhouse in my adolescence and believe me, they are under much less scrutiny than the mom and pop places. Support the little man.

So we just moved to Ft. Lauderdale and have eaten at a few "nice" restaurants that have been more of the same old crap. I have given up on fine dining and "high end". I think that the seasonality of this part of the country lends itself to be invaded by money hungry restauranteurs that know that mediocre food will turn a profit because the snowbirds will eat just about anything, especially if there is a gimmick i.e. buy one, get one free. O.K. off my soap box.
We are looking for the best FOOD. Not necessarily the best service or atmosphere but the best grub. Cuban, BBQ, Jamaican, Thai, Vietnamese, southern, etc. Local gems that define the region and people. You get my drift?
Sorry if i come off a little harsh but we moved from Houston which for the most part is chain infested and thrives on the "more food is better food" mentality. Houston has good food but the majority of the restaurants are a monopoly of corporate mediocracy.
I'd love to hear what you think...... what you really think.
Restaurants open post Ike (houston)
I just wanted to start a thread for those people who are deprerately looking for a hot meal after Ike. I know many restaurants are out of power and therefor not open. I know of a few spots that have opened.1. The Grove at discovery green. running a limited menu but offering some homey dishes like spaghetti and duck meat balls, hamburgers and bbq pork sandwiches. 2. Brasserie max and Julie 3. Gravitas
If you know of any more please post. Good luck to all
