Bacon-Maple Sticky Buns

Amen, Pyrate46. This was the first time I attempted rolls from scratch and they turned out incredibly delicious. They reheated nicely, too.

Spiked Apple Galette

Would bourbon work instead of calvados? The only thing my old man likes more than apple pie is bourbon...

Juniper Berries

A home brewing supply store would have juniper berries.

Large/beefsteak Tomato varieties

It may not be tart enough, but we've had really good luck with Mortgage Lifter here in MN. Very large, flavorful fruit - even with the crappy, wet and cool summer we had this year.

Need a QUIET place to eat...

We went to Victory 44 on a Friday evening, and it was quite loud. Open layout, lots of people. What about Sapor (very near BLG) or Alma?

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Agree with you on the eggs and lobster...maybe I got a bad batch or something, the lobster was overcooked and chewy and the portion size is too large.

Oceanaire - Always a huge letdown - maybe I don't order right...

Good Earth - I want to love it, am always dissappointed.

Favorite thing to cook in a cast iron skillet

I used my new Lodge skillet to roast an acid-based dish (tomatoes and wine) and large black peels came off the surface of pan -- I assume it was the factory seasoning.

We scrubbed the pan well to remove the flakes and re-seasoned the pan, but I won't be using it for high-acid dishes again until it's got a better season on it -- anyway, that was my experience.

Dinner at Victory 44- drinks beforehand?

It's a sweet little patio, isn't it? We really enjoyed that place...we enjoyed our servers, too. Now we're interested to check out Kitchen (sister location in Stillwater)...
RE: Dirks -- always mean to go there and forget...Leslie Bock (of Psycho Suzi's and Dirks) put in a bid for Gabby's...oh, poor man's paradise on the river?!? Heaven!

Friday evening, Union Square area?

Thanks, all. For the terrific tips. Gotta love this board!

Friday evening, Union Square area?

Wow. Terrific! Thanks!

Friday evening, Union Square area?

My husband and I are flying into San Francisco next Friday afternoon. We're from MN, meeting good friends up from San Diego for a couples' weekend. None of us have been to SF in several years. We're staying in Union Square, arriving around happy hour...
I'm sure we'll all be bushed, but haven't seen each other in ages, cocktails and smart talk will be the primary objective.
My thought is that we probably could meet at our hotel and walk in any direction to find great food and drink, but could anyone make some recommendations for happy hour, dinner, and cocktail destinations for us? We'll be getting the "lay of the land, " so walking around would be great. I expect that we'll all be tired from the week and travel. We're foodies, but atmosphere would trump the food (fun, casual, friendly), since it's more about catching up and enjoying each other in the new locale...Any neighborhood jems? Any recommendations for navigating on a Friday night?
I saw the recent post for the big 30 birthday -- would the recommendations of La Mar for HH, Perbacco or BIX, and Top of the Mark stand for four "closer to 40 than 30-somethings" who will likely be feeling pretty beat (and quite thirsty)?
Thanks!

Dinner at Victory 44- drinks beforehand?

We went to Victory 44 two Fridays ago -- we got there quite early (5:30?) so had no problem getting a table, but the place was absolutely packed by the time we left around 7:30. If they take reservations, I would make them. I can't make any recommendations for drinks beforehand, that's not my neck of the woods. Maybe you could go early, enjoy beer or wine on the nice little patio, and settle in...

good non-Mex dinner in Santa Fe?

Any recommendations for a nice non-mexican dinner in Santa Fe? I'm looking for someplace with great food, somewhat casual (don't want to have to dress up), not too pricey. While I absolutely love it, I'd like a break from southwest/mexican -- asian, american, italian, or whatever. We pretty much love it all.

Thanks!
